Development and Effectiveness of Safety Education Program for Radiological Technology Students (방사선과 학생을 위한 안전교육프로그램 개발 및 효과)

  • This study was an experimental study conducted to verify the effect of a safety education program on the safety knowledge of medical-related infections, radiation safety knowledge, and attitudes toward safety behavior among radiological technology students. This study targeted 40 radiological technology students who were about to enter clinical training who understood the purpose of the study and voluntarily participated. The safety education program was conducted over a total of three sessions, and the results were collected through two self-report questionnaires at the beginning and end. SPSS/WIN 21.0 was used for the collected data, and as a result of the study, the safety education program was related to medical-related infection safety knowledge (t=-2.15, p<.001), radiation safety knowledge (t=1.68, p=.001), and safety. The effect was verified by showing a statistically significant difference in attitude toward behavior (t=22.54, p<.001). As a result, the safety education program is effective in improving students' safety knowledge about medical-related infections, radiation safety knowledge, and attitudes toward safe behavior. If the safety education program is expanded and implemented in the future, various safety accidents can be prevented and safe clinical practice can be achieved.

Factors Affecting Sun Protection Behavior (햇빛차단 행동에 영향을 미치는 요인)

  • The purpose of this study was to find out the factors of Knowledge and attitudes related to sun safety and to determine the factors affecting sun protection behavior. The subjects were 167 adults in their twenties living in Busan. The results were as follows. 1. Four factors of knowledge about sun safety were identified: ultraviolet ray risk, sunscreen, sun protective clothing, and nil protective color. 2. Four factors of attitudes toward sun exposure were identified: attractiveness, emotion, conformity, and health concern. 3. Four factors of sun protection behavior were identified: sunscreen/parasol, shade, hat/sunglasses, and sun protective clothing. 4. Compared to women, men were relatively more risk to skin damage due to less proportion that used sunscreen and a parasol. 5. Factors of sun protective behavior, such as sunscreen/parasol, shade, hat/sunglasses, and sun protective clothing, were associated with the Knowledge related to ultraviolet ray risk. 6. Wearing a hat and sunglasses was predicted by the attractiveness, which defined as positive attitudes toward tanned appearance. 7. Shade use was affected by the perception of sun exposure as happiness and relaxing. 8. Health concern was the strongest predictor of sunscreen/parasol use.

Do Degree Programs Affect Health Profession Students' Attitudes and Opinions Toward Vaccinations? An Italian Multicenter Study

  • Background: Healthcare workers' attitudes toward vaccination have been widely described in the literature, but a restricted amount of studies assessed healthcare students' knowledge, attitudes, and opinions on this issue. This study aimed to estimate the influence of a degree course on knowledge and immunization behavior among healthcare students and to compare medical students with students from other health profession degree programs to identify possible differences. Methods: A multicenter, cross-sectional study was performed in 2018 in 14 Italian Universities (3,131 students were interviewed). A validated questionnaire was used to assess knowledge, attitudes, and opinions toward vaccinations, with a specific focus on influenza vaccine and attitudes toward mandatory vaccination policies. Statistical software STATA® 14 was used. Results: Significant differences were recorded between medical students and other healthcare students. The intention to get vaccinated against influenza during the next season and having been vaccinated in the previous season was higher in the medical group (p < 0.001). In the group of students of other health professions, we registered a lower probability of identifying themselves as a high-risk group for contracting infectious diseases as a consequence of their profession and health status (aOR 0.49; CI95%: 0.40-0.60) and an increased likelihood of defining their level of knowledge on vaccine-preventable diseases and related vaccinations as "insufficient/sufficient/fair" (aOR 1.31; CI95%: 1.11-1.56). Conclusions: Results show several differences between medical students and students of other health professions when it comes to vaccination knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions, as well as a general low tendency to be vaccinated against influenza.

The Clothing Purchase Behavior of College Students: A Comparison of Different Money Attitudes (대학생 소비자의 돈에 대한 태도 유형별 의복구매행동)

  • The purposes of this study were to identify money altitudes of college students and to examine both socio-economic characteristics and clothing purchase behaviors by different money attitudes. For this study, guestionnaires completed by 2-year and 4-year college students (n=426) were analyzed by factor analysis, cluster analysis, X²- test, and ANOVA. The results of this study were as follows: First, the money attitudes were composed of five factors and they were categorized by three clusters: cluster of considering the money as a tool for future safety, a way of approval and filling up emotions, and inclination toward stinginess and distrust. Second, the factors which were associated with money attitudes were academic level, education level of parents, household income, students' own income, and the economic level of their households. Third, in each type of attitudes, the clothing purchase behavior had four steps of decision making: problem recognition, information search, evaluation of alternatives, and the purchase. There were significant differences in the clothing purchase behavior among the money attitude styles.

Studies on the Knowledge, Attitudes, and Behavior of Mothers Toward Food Hygiene and Safety of School Food-Service Programs - part 1 (학교급식의 위생안전성에 대한 학부모의 지식, 태도 및 행동에 관한 연구 -제1보)

  • This study was performed to investigate knowledge, attitudes and related behavior on the food hygiene and safety management of school food-service programs among mothers and to find factors affecting their knowledge, attitudes and behavior. A self-administered questionnaire was offered to a random sample of 301 mothers who have children attending elementary schools in one region of Korea. The survey was carried out over a two-month period (April-May,2001). They had lower behavior scores compared to the scores of knowledge and attitudes (p〈0.05). The micro levels of the knowledge, attitudes and behavior scores also showed the same tendency. Logistic regression analysis showed that mothers' education level affected their knowledge and attitudes, while the participating activity in school food-service programs affected their behavior the most frequently. Pearson's correlation analysis confirmed that the knowledge and attitude scores were significantly correlated (r=0.61404, p〈0.001). The results indicate that the knowledge and attitude levels of mothers regarding the food hygiene and safety of school food-service programs were good, however, their behavior levels were not satisfactory. The findings highlight the importance of participating programs in school food-service programs to close gaps between the behavior and knowledge or attitudes of mothers and to improve their behavior levels.

Structural Analysis of Time and Money Attitudes, Leisure Consumption Behavior and Leisure Satisfaction (시간과 화폐에 대한 태도가 여가소비행동과 여가만족도에 미치는 영향에 대한 구조분석)

  • This study compared types of time and money attitudes by respondents' characteristics, and compared leisure consumption behavior and leisure satisfaction among different groups, which are classified by attitudes toward time and money. It also verified a structural model for the relationship of leisure satisfaction and the attitudes toward time and money, and investigated the moderating effects of leisure consumption behavior. Data were obtained from a questionnaire completed by 512 adult consumers. Using factor analyses and cluster analyses, this study classified the types of time and money attitudes. The time attitude was categorized according to four clusters: time-insensibility, future- oriented, present-oriented, and past-oriented. The money attitude was divided into four clusters: future safety, stinginess/anxiety, diversion, and power/prestige. The major findings of this study were as follows: First, the propensity of leisure consumption behavior to seek fashion and conspicuousness was higher for time-insensibility group than for the others. However, the propensity of rational consumption behavior for leisure was higher for the future-oriented group. The level of leisure satisfaction was the highest for the time-insensibility group. Second, the propensity of leisure consumption behavior to seek fashion and conspicuousness was higher for those who considered money as tools for diversion and power/prestige. The propensity of rational consumption behavior for leisure was higher for the future safety and stinginess/anxiety groups. The level of leisure satisfaction was significantly higher for the diversion group. Third, from the results of structural analyses, the time-insensibility attitude showed a positive effect on the leisure consumption behavior to seek fashion and conspicuousness. The future-oriented attitude had a positive effect on the propensity of rational consumption behavior for leisure. The money attitudes of diversion and power/prestige had positive impacts on the leisure consumption behavior to seek fashion and conspicuousness, although they had negative effects on the propensity of rational consumption behavior for leisure. The leisure consumption behavior to seek fashion and conspicuousness had a positive effect on leisure satisfaction, although the rational consumption behavior for leisure had a negative effect.

Factor Analysis and Intergroup Awareness Investigation of Workers' Safety in Logistic Center (물류센터 근로자의 안전인식에 대한 요인분석 및 집단간 인식 비교)

  • This study is to examine the workers' awareness of the safety in logistic centers. For that purpose, the exploratory factor analysis of workers' safety awareness in logistic centers was performed at first, and the 6 variables extracted from the factor analysis were then used to investigate the difference in intergroup awareness of the safety environment in the logistic centers. We administered a survey to 147 workers attending the logistic centers and collected data from them. The results of the study showed that the intergroup awareness of the safety environment turned out to be statistically different from each other in terms of working environment, safe behavior, work risk, safety knowledge and effort, risk justification and compromising attitudes. Experiences in industrial accidents influenced awareness of working environment, work risk and risk justification. The group who experienced accidents is more likely to feel risky and unsatisfied with working place, and their awareness toward risk justification was high as well. It was also observed that there exists awareness difference between manager group and worker group. The group who manages the working place showed more positive awareness of working environment, safe behavior, work risk, safety knowledge and effort, risk justification and compromising attitudes than the worker group. On the contrary, the worker group showed high recognition in risk of working place, and felt that they are willing to compromise on safety for increasing production. The scale of the logistic center produced negative influence on awareness of safety. The group in small logistic center showed the highest awareness in safety, whereas the group in large logistic center with more than 100 workers showed the highest awareness in risk. They are more likely to deviate from correct and safe work procedures due to over-familiarity with the job, as well. The findings suggest that there is a need for the safety management and education to change the workers' understanding and attitudes towards safety.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the differences of internet shopping attitude, shopping behavior, and shopping satisfaction according to purchasing frequency of internet shoppers for children's clothing. Data were collected from 170 female internet users who had purchasing experiences of children's clothing. For data analysis, factor analysis, one-way ANOVA, Duncan test, cross tabulation, regression analysis, t-test, frequency and multi- response analysis were conducted. The results are as follows: The internet shoppers for children's clothing were classified by purchasing frequency. Factors of internet shopping attitude were convenience, reliability, and safety. Significant differences were found on internet usages, internet attitudes, and shopping behaviors between two groups. Heavy purchasers used internet longer, had more positive attitude toward convenience and safety, and paid more money than light purchasers. Significant differences were found on internet attitudes according to age and internet usage. Convenience and safety factors had impact on internet shopping satisfaction.

Effects of an Education Program on Prevention of Malpractice using Precedent Cases related to Patient Safety in Safety Perception, Safety Control, Autonomy and Accountability in Clinical Nurses (판례를 이용한 환자안전관련 간호과오 예방교육이 간호사의 안전지각, 안전통제감, 자율성 및 책임수용성에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of an education program on safety perception, safety control, autonomy and accountability in clinical nurses. Precedent cases related to patient safety were used in the education program. Methods: A quasi-experimental design with pretest and posttest measures was used. Participants in the study, 72 nurses in the experimental group, 71 nurses in the control group, were enrolled for 3 months. The education program was composed of the 20 precedent cases related to patient safety from home and foreign countries. Results: The major findings of this study were as follows: Safety perception (p=.000), Safety control (p=.000), attitude toward autonomy (p=.000), and attitude toward accountability (p=.000) improved after the education program. Conclusion: The findings from this study indicate that an education program using precedent cases is an efficient method to improve behavior and change attitudes towards protecting patients' safety and preventing malpractice claims against nurses.

Health Risk of Potato Farmers Exposed to Overuse of Chemical Pesticides in Iran

  • Background: Potato is the main crop of Ardabil Plain (accounting for one-fifth of potato production in Iran). Its health hazard risk to farmers is rising due to the increasing rate of pesticide use. The present study analyzes potato farmers' health hazard risk in the use of chemical pesticides. Methods: The rate of pesticide use by farmers (n = 370) was first compared with the recommended dosage (on pesticide label). Then, a composite index was employed to estimate the health hazard risk of farmers during pesticide use, and the variables accounting for pesticide overuse and nonoveruse were analyzed. Safety behavior was examined in four steps, namely of pesticide purchase and storage, preparation, application, and postapplication. Results: It was found that 74.6 percent of potato farmers used pesticides in higher concentrations than the recommended dosage. The higher average rate of pesticide use versus recommendation (label instruction) was related to Chlorpyrifos and Trifluralin, and the highest average health hazard risk among farmers was related to the use of Chlorpyrifos and Metribuzin. Farmers with a higher risk of health hazard displayed much lower safety behavior than the other farmers at all steps of pesticide use. Conclusion: The most important variables discriminating the health hazard risk of farmers' overuse included health behavior identity, attitude, knowledge and awareness, and cues to action. Therefore, using social media, holding local exhibitions, and engaging local leaders and skilled farmers in the region to improve farmers' attitudes and health behavior identity toward the dangers of chemical pesticides can play a significant role in motivating farmers' display of overuse preventive behaviors.
