  • In this Paper, an Audio-Visual Teaching aid (AVTA) for use in a classroom and with Internet is presented. A system, which was designed and tested, consists of a wireless Microphone system, Text to Speech conversion Software, Noise filtering circuit and a Computer. An IBM compatible PC with sound card and Network Interface card and a Web browser and a voice and text messenger service were used to provide slightly delayed text and also voice over the internet for remote teaming, while providing scrolling text from a real time lecture in a classroom. The motivation for design of this system, was to aid Korean students who may have difficulty in listening comprehension while have, fairly good reading ability of text. This application of this system is twofold. On one hand it will help the students in a class to view and listen to a lecture, and on the other hand, it will serve as a vehicle for remote access (audio and text) for a classroom lecture. The project provides a simple and low cost solution to remote learning and also allows a student to have access to classroom in emergency situations when the student, can not attend a class. In addition, such system allows the student in capturing a teacher's lecture in audio and text form, without the need to be present in class or having to take many notes. This system will therefore help students in many ways.

  • This study examined effects of demographic characteristics, mothers' perceived social pressure regarding their children's education, social conspicuousness, competitiveness, and self-esteem on the mothers' fervor for their children's education. These effects were analysed separately by residential area. A total of 231 mothers who had children attend middle school at Mok-dong and Ahyun-dong surveyed by questionnaire. There were significant differences based on the mothers' residential area. Mok-dong mothers have a higher perceived social pressure about child education, self-esteem, education fervor for their child, and monthly income and fathers' and mothers' education level than Ahyun-dong mothers. In Mok-dong mothers, only demographic characteristics of the family significantly explained the mothers' education fervor. Specifically, monthly income and fathers' education level were positively related to education fervor of Mok-dong mothers. Ahyun-dong mothers' social pressure about child education and self-esteem significantly explained mothers' education fervor for their child after controlling their demographic characteristics. Specifically, positive social pressure and positive self-esteem were positively related to mothers' education fervor about their child.

  • Previous laboratory studies have shown that prosodic structures are encoded in the modulations of phonetic patterns of speech including suprasegmental as well as segmental features. In particular, effects of prosodic context on duration and intensity of syllables and words have been widely reported. Drawing on prosodically annotated large-scale speech data from the Buckeye corpus of conversational speech of American English, the current study attempted to examine whether and how prosodic prominence and phrase boundary of everyday conversational speech, as determined by a large group of ordinary listeners, are related to the phonetic realization of duration and intensity. The results showed that the patterns of word durations and intensities are influenced by prosodic structure. Closer examinations revealed, however, that the effects of prosodic prominence are not the same as those of prosodic phrase boundary. With regard to intensity measures, the results revealed the systematic changes in the patterns of overall RMS intensity near prosodic phrase boundary but the prominence effects are restricted to the nucleus. In terms of duration measures, both prosodic prominence and phrase boundary are the most closely related to the lengthening of the nucleus. Yet, prosodic prominence is more closely related to the lengthening of the onset while phrase boundary lengthens the coda duration more. The findings from the current study suggest that the phonetic realizations of prosodic prominence are different from those of prosodic phrase boundary, and speakers signal different prosodic structures through deliberate modulations of the internal phonetic structure of words and listeners attend to such phonetic variations.

  • Meningococcal Disease, manifesting as meningitis and septicemia, is a life-threatening bacterial infection that results in significant morbidity and mortality, particularly in childhood. Its epidemic potential and limited opportunities for clinical intervention due to its rapid course present unique public health and clinical challenges. Incidence is highest in infants and young children, with a secondary peak of risk in adolescents. Approximately 10% of cases are fatal and survivors can be left with serious and permanent sequelae including amputations, hearing loss and cognitive impairment. Transmission is only from human-to-human, by infected respiratory tract secretions or saliva and therefore crowding poses a tremendously elevated risk for disease development. Military recruits and university students are at high risk due to the high carriage rate in adolescents, their behavior patterns and close contact. Menveo$^{(R)}$ (Novartis Vaccines and Diagnostics), a novel quadrivalent meningococcal conjugate vaccine directed against meningococcal serogroups A, C, W-135 and Y, has been shown to be immunogenic and well tolerated in all age groups and was recently licensed for use in Korea. Recent cases and deaths among military recruits drew public attention to their elevated risk and the Korean government has recommended vaccination of all new military recruits. Many Korean students seek to attend school, university, or language institutes in countries where routine meningococcal vaccination is required - clinicians should be aware of such requirements to ensure that students are vaccinated prior to arrival in the destination country.

  • Sound transmission either as airborne or structure borne is a potential problem that occurs in buildings either from sources within or from outside. With the expansion of real estate activities in countries like India, the need to attend sound insulation requirements also assumes greater dimensions. The focus of this research is on studying the sound transmission characteristics of building structures made of hollow blocks, neocrete block, aerocon block and prefabricated panels such as Ferrocement panel. The tests were carried out the blocks with and without plastering and their sound reduction index was measured at one-third octave frequencies. In the case of ferrocement panels, different types of systems were tested in the TL suite. Panels with cavity, with cavity ties, with insulation, with stiffeners and with plasterboard were investigated. Sound reduction index of these panels was measured with additional quantities like longitudinal wavespeed, and loss factors (internal and total loss factor). Tests were also conducted on Cypcrete wall panel and Sandwiched wooden panel in a similar way. Theoretical investigations were carried out using Statistical Energy Analysis (SEA) for the above systems. Sound reduction index was then compared between the predicted and the measured values.

  • This thesis is in focus on keeping int'l businessman in mind application of CISG to perform smoothly in the their oversea's trade in accordance with taking effect on ratification of it from first, March, 2005. First of all, they have to keep in mind that it is possible to fall within the sphere of application of CISG of their contracts made between parties whose places of business are in different countries or although they have their places of business in different contracting states, if rules of private int'l law imply or express to the application of law of contracting state. Therefore in order to avoid confusion about whether apply or not, it is necessary to customize application of CISG as a proper law of their contracts. If so, they can avoid problem of requirements as to forms and any other requirement as to forms. Secondly they must attend the use of the legislative history of CISG and the use of the int'l case law and various scholarly thesises that studied on CISG such as information of Institute of Int'l Commercial Law under School of Law, PACE University. If so, problems which can give a rise in connection with interpretation of a basic and important terminology of CISG will be successfully conquest. In addition to above mentioned attentiveness, they must keeping in mind that various problems in connection with application of provisions of CISG can give their oversea's business a obstacle. buy the way of precaution against this case, they have to collect and analyze various materials about CISG.

  • Many students accumulate work experience while they attend college. Using data from Korean Youth Panel, I investigate the effects of in-school work experience on school-to-work process. Work during college contributes to take first job quickly after school, but has no significant effect on wage level of first job. These results show that in-school work experience might help job search but not provide skills and knowledge. These findings suggest that it is necessary to link the youth internship programme to in-school learning in collaboration with school.
