  • The present study systematically analyzed the relationships between children's emotional and behavioral problems, attachment, fears and coping behaviors. The subjects of this study were 63 school-aged children residing in Seoul, Gwangiu and South Jeolla province. The findings indicated that emotional and behavioral problems were negatively correlated to children's attachments to their fathers and peers. The children's attachment to peers had a significant correlation as well as behavioral problems and coping strategies used by children in stressful situations. Emotional problems were explained by fears of realistic objects, the seeking out of social support, mother and father attachment, and fears of imaginary objects. In addition, behavioral problems were explained by aggressive coping behaviors and child-father attachment.

  • This study examined the relationships among children's attachment to the mother, trait anger, anger expression style, and emotional-behavioral problems in children. The subjects were 384 5th and 6th graders at elementary schools in J and G cities of Jeonbuk-Do. The instruments were Revised Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment (IPPA-R), Stat-Trait Anger Expression Inventory - Korean version (STAXI-K), and Strength and Difficulty Questionnaire (SDQ). The major results are as follows; The level of children's attachment to the mother was negatively related to anger and emotional-behavioral problems, and the level of trait anger was positively related to emotional-behavioral problems. Children who have high anger expression and anger suppression tended to show more externalized behavior problems. Finally, the regression analysis showed that children's attachment to the mother and anger are revealed as significant factors in emotional-behavioral problems.

  • This study investigates the developmental pattern of adhesive discs (ADs) to highlight the ontogeny and structural changes that occur during the growth of Boston ivy. Initiation to postmortem features of ADs were examined through light and scanning electron microscopy. The study also reveals a new finding of the dislocation of peripheral tissues of adaxial origin. Four phases of attachment are suggested with regards to its climbing behavior: 1) pre-attachment, 2) upon attachment, 3) after attachment, and 4) final attachment. During initiation, several ADs originate from tendril primordia without epidermal differentiation. However, different growth rates in the epidermis results in completely different ADs. ADs were discerned by size, shape, and color during expansion, but cells in the adaxial surface remained alive longer than the other side. Upon contact, the ADs demonstrate simultaneous growth and deterioration, but once attachment is established the latter process subdues to final stages. Epidermal transformation, adhesive secretion, cellular disruption, and mechanical stress were essential for the self-clinging nature of Boston ivy. The post-attachment sequence is also believed to be critical in achieving maximum mechanical strength to provide extensive support. The developmental process of ADs is prompted by tactile stimulation but in a highly organized and systematic manner.

  • Purpose: Adolescence is viewed as a critical period in the formation of health behavior and many health behaviors developed during this era persist into adulthood. Social-cognitive theory, self-efficacy as a central construct, has been used to predict and intervene the health behavioral patterns in adolescent. Previous research demonstrated that the attachment in childhood and self-esteem as psychosocial factors are predictors of the health efficacy in adolescent and it is viewed as solely an antecedent for the lifelong health behavior. Method: To investigate the path pattern of attachment in childhood, self-esteem and health efficacy in adolescents, 381 adolescents in high school from two urban cities in Korea were recruited for cross-sectional sample. Attachment in childhood was measured using Mother-Father-Peer Scale. Self esteem was measured with Hare self esteem. Perceived self efficacy in Health was measured by the School Health Efficacy Questionnaire. The path analysis revealed a significant relationship between attachment in childhood and self-esteem, self-esteem and health efficacy in adolescents. Self esteem was the strongest contributing factor for health efficacy in adolescent. The results suggest that attachment in childhood may aid in formulating positive self -esteem in adolescents and self-esteem played a major role in predicting health efficacy in adolescents. Conclusion: Therefore, self-esteem enrichment should be incorporated with adolescent health promotion and certainly should be a component in any health education program in school health program and interventions. These results have implications of psychosocial and family related factors on health promotion and health education for the health care provider with regard to primary and secondary prevention in adolescent population.

  • This study was designed to analysis a causal modeling between peer acceptance of children and the related variables. The subjects were 430 5th and 6th elemantary school children. Using questionnares data on peer acceptance aggression & withdrawal behavior rated by same-sex peers and mother-child attachment were gathered,. For the statiscal analyses multiple regression and path-analysis were used. The results show social behavior that effects peer acceptance is influenced by not only aggresive behavior but also withdrawal behavior, Peer acceptance was not affected directly by mother-child attachment and paternal education while academic achievement affected peer acceptance indirectly. Therefore children's peer acceptance is mainly determined by social behavior as well as academic achievement.

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to measure the effect of a group-based parent education program on parenting stress and attitude and comparing the same according to adult attachment styles. Methods: Twenty-two mothers who enrolled in the parent education program participated in our study. The participants filled in the Korean version of the Experience in Close Relationship Revised (ECR-R), Korean-Parenting Stress Index-Short Form (K-PSI-SF), Maternal Behavior Research Instrument (MBRI), and Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R) before and after the program. We compared the pre - and post-scores of the groups and compared the differences in effect according to adult attachment styles. Results: For all study participants, the Parent Distress (p=0.023) and Total Parenting Stress (p=0.018) significantly declined after the parent education program. There were no differences in other variables. Within the secure attachment group, the Total Parenting Stress (p=0.008), Parent Distress (p=0.015), and Difficult Child (p=0.011) scores in the K-PSI-SF significantly decreased after participating in the program. The Difficult Child scores (p=0.040) significantly dropped in the K-PSI-SF post program within the secure attachment group, compared to the insecure attachment group. Conclusion: The group-based parent education program impacted parenting stress. Depending on the adult attachment styles, the effect of the program varied.

  • Purpose: The study was done to investigate behavioral problems in toddlers who were born prematurely and to analyze related factors. Methods: A cross-sectional explorative study was conducted with 72 preterm birth (PTB) children at 24 to 41 months of corrected age who were born at 28 to 37 weeks' gestation. During home visits, behavior problems were assessed using the Behavior Rating Index for Children (BRIC). Using a BRIC score of ${\geq}30$, children with suspected behavior problems were grouped in the non-regular behavior group. Results: Of the children, 38.9% belong to the non-regular behavior group. The mental development index score for the Korean-Bayley Scale of Infant Development- II was higher for the non-regular behavior group compared to the regular behavior group (t=2.26, p=.027). Logistic regression analysis showed that lower maternal attachment (<96, OR=3.4, 95% CI[1.1, 10.4]) and higher parenting stress (${\geq}97$, OR=4.8, 95% CI[1.3, 17.3]) were independently related to non-regular behavior. Conclusion: PTB Toddlers are at risk for behavior problems which are associated with low cognitive performance. Maternal-child attachment and maternal parenting stress were strongly related to behavior problems in these children. More attention is needed to understand possible behavior problems in young children with PTB, particularly focusing on maternal-child interaction and maternal mental well-being.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted in order to identify factors related to the health behavior in elementary school children at a late school age and to provide basic data to develop more concrete and practical applications for health promotion and disease prevention. Methods: The participants were 2,775 4th, 5th and 6th graders sampled from 10 elementary schools in Busan Metropolitan City and data were collected from 15th May to 30th June, 2010. The collected data were analyzed by mean, percentile, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson s correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression using the SPSS/WIN 17.0 program. Results: The average percentiles for self-rated health, body satisfaction, stress, parent attachment, self-esteem, and health behavior were 82.8, 69.5, 40.9 79.3, 75.9 and 75.9, respectively. There was significant relationship among the levels of self-rated health, body satisfaction, stress, parent attachment, self-esteem, and health behavior. Body satisfaction was the most powerful factor to the health behavior of elementary school children at a late school age, and was followed by parent attachment, self-rated health, self-esteem, and grade in order. These variables explained 26.6% of the total variance in health behavior. Conclusion: Health promotion behavior programs including body satisfaction and self-esteem elevation programs should be applied to children at home and in school and community. To achieve this, institutional and economic support should be continued.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between caregivers' child rearing characteristics including discipline method, child rearing confidence, attitude, burden, attachment, and cognitive stimulation and preschooler's behavior problems in poor, urban group. Method: A cross-section study design was used. Conveniently selected one hundreds and three preschool aged children and their caregivers who are under National Security Act were recruited. Data was collected using Korean Child Behavior Checklist (K-CBC) comprised of nine sub-dimensions and caregivers' self report questionnaires. Results: Caregivers' discipline method was associated with behavior problems of child. The internalizing and externalizing behavior problem scores including aggressive behavior of children who experienced spanking were significantly higher than children who did not. In addition, Caregivers' child rearing confidence also showed associations with the children's behavior problems. Child behavior problems showed positive relationships with caregivers' child rearing burden, and negative relationships with child rearing attitude, attachment, and cognitive stimulation. Conclusion: Caregivers' negative discipline methods and low child rearing confidence showed significant relationships with children's behavior problems of poor, urban children. Nurses working in primary care and community-based settings are in key positions to address this problem and improve the parenting attitude of low-income caregivers and positively affect the behavior of their children.
