Ir-192 source is one of the most widely used radioisotopes in the field of non-destructive testing applications. To obtain radiation safety it is necessary to take into consideration integrity of welded joint in the production of sealed radiation source. Generally, the quality of a resistance welded joint is strongly influenced by process parameters during the welding process such as current, welding time and applied force. In this study, resistance welding technology and system were developed for sealing of Ir-192 industrial radiation source capsules. In order to evaluate the weld quality in real time, quantitative relationships between process parameters and electrode displacement were also established.
Liquid fueled molten salt reactors (MSRs) have seen renewed interest because of their inherent safety features, higher thermal efficiency and potential for efficient thorium utilisation for power generation. Thorium fluoride is one of the salts used in liquid fueled MSRs employing Th-U cycle. In the present study, ThF4 was prepared by hydro-fluorination of ThO2 using anhydrous HF gas. Process parameters viz. bed depth, hydrofluorination time and hydrofluorination temperature, were optimized for the preparation of ThF4 in a static bed reactor setup. The products were characterized with X-Ray diffraction and experimental conditions for complete conversion to ThF4 were established which also corroborated with the yield values. Hydrofluorination of ThO2 at 450 ℃ for half an hour at a bed depth of 6 mm gave the best result, with a yield of about 99.36% ThF4. No unconverted oxide or any other impurity was observed. Rietveld refinement was performed on the XRD data of this ThF4, and Chi2 value of 3.54 indicated good agreement between observed and calculated profiles.
The dynamic character of a system of the governing differential equations for the one- dimensional two-fluid model, where the momentum flux parameters are employed to consider the velocity and void fraction distribution in a flow channel, is investigated. In response to a perturbation in the form of a'traveling wave, a linear stability analysis is peformed for the governing differential equations. The expression for the growth factor as a function of wave number and various flow parameters is analytically derived. It provides the necessary and sufficient conditions for the stability of the one-dimensional two-fluid model in terms of momentum flux parameters. It is demonstrated that the one-dimensional two-fluid model employing the physical momentum flux parameters for the whole range of dispersed flow regime, which are determined from the simplified velocity and void fraction profiles constructed from the available experimental data and $C_{o}$ correlation, is stable to the linear perturbations in all wave-lengths. As the basic form of the governing differential equations for the conventional one-dimensional two-fluid model is mathematically ill posed, it is suggested that the velocity and void distributions should be properly accounted for in the one-dimensional two-fluid model by use of momentum flux parameters.s.
For more realistic assessment of Korean food chain radiation doses due to the operation of nuclear facilities, it is required to use domestically produced data for radionuclide transfer parameters in crop plants. This paper analyzed results of last about 10 year's studies on radionuclide transfer parameters in major crop plants by the Korean Atomic Energy Research Institute, comparing with the published international data, and consequently suggested the proper parameters to use. The trends of transfer parameter shows normal distributions if we have a lot of experimental data, but some radionuclides showed enormous variations with the environment of experimental, crops and soils. These transfer factors can be used to assess realistic radiation doses or to predict the doses in crops for normal operation or accidental release. Some kinds of parameter can be produced as conservatives or fragmentary results because soil-to-plant transfer factors were measured through greenhouse experiments which sometimes showed improper field situations. But these parameters mentioned in this paper can be representative of the status of Korean food chain than that of foreign country.
The sensitivity analysis of input parameters was Performed fer an ingestion dose assessment model (U. S. NRC's Regulatory Guide 1.109 model) from routine releases of radionuclides. In this study, three kinds of typical Korean foodstuffs (rice, leaff vegetables, milk) and two kinds of radionuclides $(^{l37}Cs,\;^{131}I)$ were considered. The values of input parameters were sampled using a Latin hypercube sampling technique based on Monte Carlo approach. Sensitivity indices, which represent the influence or the importance of input parameters for predictive results, were quantitatively expressed by the partial rank correlation coefficients. As the results, the ratio of the interception fraction to the yield of agricultural plants and the human consumption rate were sensitive input parameters for the considered foodstuffs and radionuclides. Additionally, in case of milk, the transfer factor of radionuclides from animal intake to milk and the daily intake rate of feedstuffs were sensitive input parameters. The weathering removal half-life and the delay time from food production to human consumption were relatively sensitive for $^{137}Cs$ and $^{131}I$ depositions, respectively.
Ir-192 radiation sealed sources are widely employed to the therapeutic applications as well as the non-destructive testing. Production of Ir-192 sources requires a delicate but robust welding technique because it is employed in a high radioactive working environment. A GTA(Gas Tungsten Arc) welding technique is currently well established for this purpose. However, this welding method requires a frequent replacement of the electrode, which results in the delay of the production to take a preparatory action such as to isolate the radiation sources from the working place before getting access to the welding machine. Hence, a resistance welding technique is considered as an alternative method of the GTA welding technique. The advantages of resistance welding are high welding speed and high-rate production. Also it has very long life of electrode comparing to GTA welding. In this study, the resistance welding system and proper welding conditions were established for sealing Ir-192 source capsule. As a results of various experiments, it showed that electrode displacement can be employed as a indicator to predict welding quality. We proposed two mathematical models(linear and curvilinear) to estimate electrode displacement with process parameters such as applied force, welding current and welding time by using regression analysis method. Predicting results of both linear and curvilinear model were relatively good agreement with experiment.

Material properties such as coolant specific heat, film heat transfer coefficient, cladding thermal conductivity, surface diffusion coefficient of the multi-bubble are improved in MACSIS-Mod1. The axial power and flux profile module was also incorporated with irradiation history. The performance and feasibility of the updated driver fuel pin have been analyzed for nominal parameters based on the conceptual design for the KALIMER breakeven core by MACSIS-MOD1 code. The fuel slug centerline temperature takes the maximum at 700mm from the bottom of the slug in spite of the nearly symmetric axial power distribution. The cladding mid-wall and coolant temperatures take the maximum at the top of the pin. Temperature of the fuel slug surface over the entire irradiation life is much lower than the fuel-clad eutectic reaction temperature. The fission gas release of the driver fuel pin at the end of life is predicted to be $68.61\%$ and plenum pressure is too low to cause cladding yielding. The probability that the fuel pin would fail is estimated to be much less than that allowed in the design criteria. The maximum radial deformation of the fuel pin is $1.93\%$, satisfying the preliminary design criterion ($3\%$) for fuel pin deformation. Therefore the conceptual design parameters of the driver fuel pin for the KALIMER breakeven core are expected to satisfy the preliminary criteria on temperature, fluence limit, deformation limit etc.

The deposition conditions for plating polonium have been optimized with deposition parameters such as pH, volume and temperature of the deposition and deposition time. In the tap water, the chemical yields of polonium forthe deposition solution adjusted to pH 0 were higher than those for the deposition solution adjusted to pH 2. This modified auto-deposition method made it possible to obtain reliable data of activity concentration of Po-210.
The predictions of the radical reaction sites for phenol, 2-, 3- and 4-chlorophenols (CPs) and 4-chloronitrobenzene (CNB) were studied by atomic charge distribution calculations. The atomic charge distributions on each atom of these molecules were obtained using the CHelpG and MK (Merz-Kollman/Singh) methods with the optimized structural parameters determined by DFT calculation at the level of BLYP/6-311++G(d,p). By comparing the experimentally obtained hydroxyl addition site(s) and the calculated atomic charges on carbon atoms of phenol and CPs, we found that hydroxyl substitution by oxidation reaction mainly occurred to the carbon(s) with high atomic charges. With these results, we were easily able to predict the position(s) of the ·OH reaction site(s) of phenol, CPs and CNB through atomic charge distribution calculations.
In this paper, several parameters affecting the sensitivity and determining the minimum detectable activity (MDA) for the measurement of the Pu isotopes were investigated. Among the parameters affecting the determination of the MDA values for the Pu isotopes in the environmental samples, amounts of the samples appeared to be crucial factors in decreasing the MDA values. The MDA for the Pu isotopes in the environmental samples were calculated by varying the counting time of the samples and background. The results obtained in this study can be used for an environmental radiation monitoring program regarding the level of concern for a radionuclide beyond which some action may need to be taken.
