Graphene has been emerged as a fascinating material for future nanoelectronic applications due to its extraordinally electronic properties. However, their zero-bandgap semimetallic nature is a major problem for applications in high performance field-effect transistors (FETs). Graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with narrow widths (${\geq}10nm$) exhibit semiconducting behavior, which can be used to overcome this problem. In previous reports, GNRs were produced by several approaches, such as electron beam lithography patterning, chemically derived GNRs, longitudinal unzipping of carbon nanotubes, and inorganic nanowire template. Using these methods, however, the width distribution of GNRs was a quiet broad and substantial defects were inevitably occurred. Here, we report a novel approach for fabricating width-tailored GNRs by focused ion beam-assisted chemical vapor deposition (FIB-CVD). Width-tailored phenanthrene ($C_{14}H_{10}$) templates for direct growth of GNRs were prepared on $SiO_2$/Si substrate by FIB-CVD. The GNRs on the templates were synthesized at $900-1,050^{\circ}C$ with introducing $CH_4$$(20sccm)/H_2$ (10 sccm) mixture gas for 10-300 min. Structural characterizations of the GNRs were carried out using Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy.
ZnO, a wurtzite lattice structure, has attracted much attention as a promising material for light-emitting diodes (LEDs) due to highly efficient UV emission resulting from its large band gap of 3.37 eV, large exciton binding energy of 60 meV, and low power threshold for optical pumping at room temperature. For the realization of LEDs, both n-type ZnO and p-type ZnO are required. Now, n-type ZnO for practical applications is available; however, p-type ZnO still has many drawbacks. In this study, ZnO films were grown on glass substrates by using atomic layer deposition (ALD) and the ZnO films were irradiated by nitrogen ion beams (20 keV, $10^{13}{\sim}10^{15}ions/cm^2$). The effects of nitrogen-beam irradiation on the ZnO structure as well as the electrical property were investigated by using fieldemission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and Hall-effect measurement.

High purity Fe thin films were prepared by the ion beam deposition method with $^{56}Fe^{+}$ions on the Si substrate at the room temperature. The Fe thin films were deposited at the ion energy of 50 eV and 100 eV. Microstructural properties were investigated on the atomic scale using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). It was found that the Fe thin film obtained with the energy of 50 eV having an excellent corrosion resistance consists of the amorphous layer of ~15 nm in thickness and the bcc crystalline layer of about 30 nm in grain size, while the thin film obtained with the energy of 100 eV having a poor corrosion resistance consists of little amorphous layer and the defective crystalline layer. Furthermore the crystal structures and arrangements of the oxide layers formed on the Fe thin films were analyzed by processing of the HRTEM images. It was concluded that the corrosion behavior of Fe thin films relates to the surface morphology and the crystalline structure as well as the degree of purification.
The hybrid cation exchange fibers using graft copolymer of styrene onto PE/PP with PET trunk polymers were synthesized by electron beam preirradiation. The degree of grafting showed 123% value at 80% concentration of styrene. And also, amount of sulfonyl group in the ion exchanger was showed 3.3 mmol/g at 70% concentration of styrene and their values were constant after 70%. The tensile strength for fibers was lower than trunk fibers, and their value of ion exchange fibers were also below than copolymer. It was $0.206kgf/mm^2$ value. The breakthrough time for Ca and Mg ions of hybrid cation exchange fibers were increased with the increase in the pH and temperature. The breakthrough of Mg was slower the mixture than single Mg solution. Adsorption rate constant for Ca, Mg ions and maximum ion exchange capacity were 0.012, 0.011 L/mg.h and 47.06, 42.83 mg/g, and also, activation energies were 2169 and 1534 J/mol, respectively.

Time-Of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) are the useful instruments to measure nanostructures of material surfaces. Surface pattern formation in blending homopolymer and diblock copolymer films was investigated as a function of film thickness and annealing conditions. In this study, surface structures of blending homopolymer [deuterated polystyrene (Mn 20,000), poly (methyl methacrylate) (Mn 18,000)] and diblock copolymer [Poly (deuteratedstyrene(d8)-b-methyl methacrylate) (Mn 19,500-18,100)] films were observed. The AFM result indicated that the nanostructures and film thickness depended on temperature, concentration and solvent. TOF-SIMS depth profiling was obtained for the lamellar morphology of symmetric dPS-b-PMMA which is found to orient parallel to the surface of the substrate. Elemental and molecular depth profiles measured in the negative ion mode by a Cs+ primary ion beam demonstrate variations in hydrogen, deuterium, carbon, oxygen, hydrocarbons and deuterated hydrocarbons within the diblock copolymer according to the depth.
We have been developing a new label-free nanobio imaging platform using non-linear optics such as Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Spectroscopy (CARS) and ion beam techniques based on sputtering and scattering such as Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) and Medium Energy Ion Scattering Spectroscopy (MEIS), which have been widely used for atomic and molecular level analysis of semiconductors and nanomaterials. To apply techniques developed for semiconductors and nanomaterials for biomedical applications, the convergence of nano-analysis and biology were tried. Our activities on label-free nanobio imaging during the last decade are summarized in this review about non-linear optical 3D imaging, ellipsometric interface imaging, SIMS imaging, and TOF-MEIS nano analysis for cardiovascular tissues, collagen thin films, peptides on microarray, nanoparticles, and cell adhesion studies and finally the present snapshot of nanobio imaging and the future prospect are described.
Currently, focused ion beams (FIB) are widely used for specimen preparation in atom probe tomography (APT), which is a three-dimensional and atomic-scale compositional analysis tool. Specimen preparation, in which a specific region of interest is identified and a sharp needle shape created, is the first step towards successful APT analysis. The FIB technique is a powerful tool for site-specific specimen preparation because it provides a lift-out technique and a controllable manipulation function. In this paper, we demonstrate a general procedure containing the crucial points of FIB-based specimen preparation. We introduce aluminum holders with moveable pin and an axial rotation manipulator for specimen handling, which are useful for flipping and rotating the specimen to present the backside and the perpendicular direction. We also describe specimen preparation methods for nanowires and nanopowders, using a pick-up method and an embedding method by epoxy resin, respectively.

The relation between the ion irradiation induced grain growth and the basic parameters sinvolved in ion beam mixing process was studied. TEM micrographs showed that a significant grain growth has been induced by Ar+ irradiation at room temperature. The grain size increases rapidly in low dose region, while it approaches a saturated value in high dose region, and it has close relationship with nuclear energy deposition and thermodynamic properties such as cohesive energy ( Hc) and heat of mixing ( Hm). A model for the grain growth based on the thermal spike induced atomic migration was developed and applied to interpret experimental results.

Atomic behavior during ion beam sputtering was investigated by using classical molecular dynamics simulation. When Ar ion bombards on Au and Pd(001) surface with various incidence energies and angles, some atoms which gained substantial energy by impacting Ar ion were sputtered out and, simultaneously, others were landed on the surface as if surface atoms were redeposited. It was observed that the redeposited atoms are five times for Au and three times for Pd as many as sputtered atoms irrespective of both incidence energy and angle. From sequential ion bombarding calculations, contrary to the conventional concepts which have described the mechanism of surface pattern formation based only on the erosion theory, the redeposition atoms were turned out to play a significant role in forming the surface patterns.
The laser ablation/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry is applied to the isotopic analysis of solid samples using a home-made instrument. The technique is convenient for solid sample analysis due to the onestep process of vaporization and ionization of the samples. The analyzed samples were lead, cadmium, molybdenum, and ytterbium. To optimize the analytical conditions of the technique, several parameters, such as laser energy, laser wavelength, size of the laser beam on the samples surface, and high voltages applied on the ion source electrodes were varied. Low energy of laser light was necessary to obtain the optimal mass resolution of spectra. The 532 nm light generated mass spectra with the higher signal-to-noise ratio compared with the 355 nm light. The best mass resolution obtained in the present study is ~1,500 for the ytterbium.
