The large-area high-power radio-frequency (RF) driven ion sources based on the negative hydrogen (deuterium) ion beam extraction are the major components of neutral beam injection (NBI) systems in future large-scale fusion devices such as an ITER and DEMO. Positive hydrogen (deuterium) RF ion sources were the major components of the second NBI system on ASDEX-U tokamak. A test large-area high-power RF ion source (LAHP-RaFIS) has been developed for steady-state operation at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) to extract the positive ions, which can be used for the NBI heating and current drive systems in the present fusion devices, and to extract the negative ions for negative ion-based plasma heating and for future fusion devices such as a Fusion Neutron Source and Korea-DEMO. The test RF ion source consists of a driver region, including a helical antenna and a discharge chamber, and an expansion region. RF power can be transferred at up to 10 kW with a fixed frequency of 2 MHz through an optimized RF matching system. An actively water-cooled Faraday shield is located inside the driver region of the ion source for the stable and steady-state operations of RF discharge. The characteristics and uniformities of the plasma parameter in the RF ion source were measured at the lowest area of the expansion bucket using two RF-compensated electrostatic probes along the direction of the short- and long-dimensions of the expansion region. The plasma parameters in the expansion region were characterized by the variation of loaded RF power (voltage) and filling gas pressure.
The first neutral beam injector (NBI-1) has been developed for the Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) tokamak. A first long pulse ion source (LPIS-1) has been installed on the NBI-1 for an auxiliary heating and current drive of KSTAR core plasmas. Performance of ion and neutral beam extractions in the LPIS-1 was investigated initially on the KSTAR NBI-1 system, prior to the neutral beam injection into the main plasmas. The ion source consists of a JAEA magnetic bucket plasma generator with multi-pole cusp fields and a set of KAERI prototype-III tetrode accelerators with circular apertures. The inner volume of plasma generator and accelerator column in the LPIS-1 is approximately 123 liters. Final design requirements for the ion source were a 120 kV/ 65 A deuterium beam and a 300 s pulse length. The extraction of ion beams was initiated by the formation of arc plasmas in the LPIS-1, called as an arc-beam extraction method. A stable ion beam extraction of LPIS-1 has been achieved up to an 100 kV/42 A for a 4 s pulse length and an 80 kV/25 A for a 14 s pulse length. Optimum beam perveance of 1.21 microperv has been found at an accelerating voltage of 80 kV. Neutralization efficiency has been measured by using a water flow calorimetry (WFC) method of calorimeter and an operation of bending magnet. The full-energy species of ion beams have been detected by using the diagnostic method of optical multichannel analyzer (OMA). An arc efficiency of the LPIS was 0.6~1.1 A/kW depending on the operating conditions of arc discharge.
The surface functionalization of a fluoropolymer by ion beam-induced graft polymerization was described in this research. The surface of poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) films were irradiated by a 150 keV $H^+$ ions, and 4-vinyl pyridine (4VP) as a functional monomer was then thermally graft polymerized on the irradiated surface. The surface properties of poly(4-vinyl pyridine) (P4VP)-grafted PTFE films were investigated in terms of grafting degree, wettability, chemical structure, and morphology. The results revealed that the surface of PTFE films was successfully functionalized by ion beam-induced graft polymerization of 4VP.
In the thin film alloy formation of the transition metals ion-beam-mixing technique forms a metastable structure which cannot be found in the arc-melted metal alloys. Sppecifically it is well known that the studies about the electronic structure of ion-beam-mixed alloys pprovide the useful information in understanding the metastable structures in the metal alloy. We studied the electronic change in the ion-beam-mixed ppt-Ct alloys by XppS and XANES. These analysis tools pprovide us information about the charge transfer in the valence band of intermetallic bonding. The multi-layered films were depposited on the SiO2 substrate by the sequential electron beam evapporation at a ppressure of less than 5$\times$10-7 Torr. These compprise of 4 ppairs of ppt and Cu layers where thicknesses of each layer were varied in order to change the alloy compposition. Ion-beam-mixing pprocess was carried out with 80 keV Ae+ ions with a dose of $1.5\times$ 1016 Ar+/cm2 at room tempperature. The core and valence level energy shift in these system were investigated by x-ray pphotoelectron sppectroscoppy(XppS) pphotoelectrons were excited by monochromatized Al K a(1486.6 eV) The ppass energy of the hemisppherical analyzer was 23.5 eV. Core-level binding energies were calibrated with the Fermi level edge. ppt L3-edge and Cu K-edge XANES sppectra were measured with the flourescence mode detector at the 3C1 beam line of the ppLS (ppohang light source). By using the change of White line(WL) area of the each metal sites and the core level shift we can obtain the information about the electrons pparticippating in the intermetallic bonding of the ion-beam-mixed alloys.
By the ion bombardment the original discrete layered structure is damaged and a uniformly mixed layer is formed by the intermixing of the films. Immediately after this dynamic cascade mixing a structure of this mixed layer is likely to be a mixture of randomly distributed atoms. Subsequently the mixed layered structure becomes a non-equilibrium structure such as the metastable pphase because the kinetic energies of the incident ions rappidly dissippate and host atoms within the collision cascade region are quenched from a highly energetic state. The formation of the metastable transition metal alloys using ion-beam-mixing has been extensively studied for many years because of their sppecific ppropperties that differ from those of bulk materials. in ion-beam-mixing the alloy or comppound is formed due to the atomic interaction between different sppecies during ion bombardment. in this study the metastable pphase formed by ion-beam-mixing pprocess is comppared with equilibrium one by arc-melting method by GXRD and XAS. Therfore we studied the fundamental characteristics of charge redistribution uppon alloying and formation of intermetallic comppounds. The multi-layer films were depposited on a wet-oxidized Si(100) substrate by sequential electron beam evapporation at a ppressure of less than 5$\times$10-7 Torr during depposition. These compprise 4 ppairs of Co and ppt layers where thicknesses of each layer were varied in order to change the alloy compposition.
Carbon micropatterns (CMs) were fabricated from a negative-type SU-8 photoresist by proton ion beam lithography and pyrolysis. Well-defined negative-type SU-8 micropatterns were formed by proton ion beam lithography at the optimized fluence of $1{\times}10^{15}ions\;cm^{-2}$ and then pyrolyzed to form CMs. The crosslinked network structures formed by proton irradiation were converted to pseudo-graphitic structures by pyrolysis. The fabricated CMs showed a good electrical conductivity of $1.58{\times}10^2S\;cm^{-1}$ and a very low surface roughness.
Ion implantation has been widely developed during the past decades to become a standard industrial tool. To comply with the growing needs in ion implantation, innovative technology for the control of ion beam parameters is required. Beam current, beam profile, ion fractions are of great interest when uniformity of the implant is an issue. Especially, it is important to measure the spatial distribution of beam power and also the energy distribution of accelerated ions. This energy distribution is influenced by the proportion of mass for ion in the plasma generator(ion source) and by charge exchange and dissociation within the accelerator structure and also by possible collective effects in the neutralizer which may affect the energy and divergence of ions. Hydrogen atom has been the object of a good study to investigate the energy distribution. Hydrogen ion sources typically produce multi-momentum beams consisting of atomic ion ($H^+$) and molecular ion ($H_2^+$ and $H_3^+$). In the beam injector, the molecular ions pass through a charge-exchanges gas cell and break up into atomic with one-half (from $H_2^+$) or one-third (from $H_3^+$) according to their accelerated energy. Burrell et al. have observed the Doppler shifted lines from incident $H^+$, $H_2^+$, and $H_3^+$ using a Doppler shift spectroscopy. Several authors have measured the proportion of mass for hydrogen ion and deuterium using an ion source equipped with a magnetic dipole filter. We developed an ion implanter with 50-KeV and 20-mA ion source and 100-keV accelerator tube, aiming at commercial uses. In order to measure the proportion of mass for ions, we designed a filter system which can be used to measure the ion fraction in any type of ion source. The hydrogen and helium ion species compositions are used a filter system with the two magnets configurations.
The pressure distributions in the test stand built for developing KSTAR NBI ion sources were obtained using a network system composed of conductance elements modeling the ion source, the neutralizer, and other beam line components. The allowable regime was defined on the coordinates of the gas supply rate to the ion source and the neutralizer, considering the proper conditions of the three critical parameters, the ion source pressure for good arc discharge, the pressure integral in the neutralizer for sufficient neutralization, and the chamber pressure for minimum neutral beam loss. The neutral beam evolution along the path from the ion source extraction grid to the calorimeter through the neutralizer, the bending magnet and the vacuum chamber was estimated for typical pressure distributions.

A large-area RF-driven ion source is being developed at Germany for the heating and current drive of ITER device. Negative hydrogen ion sources are major components of neutral beam injection (NBI) systems in future large-scale fusion experiments such as ITER and DEMO. The RF sources for the production of positive hydrogen ions have been successfully developed at IPP (Max-Planck-Institute for Plasma Physics), Garching, for the ASDEX-U and W7-AS neutral beam heating systems. Ion sources of the first NBI system (NBI-1) for the KSTAR tokamak have been developed successfully with a bucket plasma generator based on the filament arc discharge, which have contributed to achieve a good plasma performance such as 15 sec H-mode operation with an injection of 3.5 MW NB power. There is a development plan of RF ion source at the KAERI to extract the positive ions, which can be used for the second NBI system (NBI-2) of the KSTAR and to extract the negative ions for future fusion devices such as Fusion Neutron Source and Korea-DEMO. The development progresses of RF ion source at the KAERI are described in this presentation.

We present the low temperature (${\leq}1,000^{\circ}C$) vacuum sublimation behavior of an e-beam evaporative deposited on a SiC film and a method to reduce the vacuum sublimation through an ion beam process. The density of the SiC film deposited using the e-beam evaporation method was ~60% of the density of the bulk source material. We found that the sublimation became appreciable above ${\sim}750^{\circ}C$ under $1.5{\times}10^{-5}$ torr pressure and the sublimation rate increased with an increase in temperature, reaching ~70 nm/h at $950^{\circ}C$ when the coated sample was heated for 5 h. When the film was irradiated with 70 keV N+ ions prior to heating, the sublimation rate decreased to ~23 nm/h at a fluence of $1{\times}10^{17}\;ions/cm^2$. However, a further increase in fluence beyond this value or an extended heating period did not change (decrease or increase) the sublimation rate any further.
