THE MORPHOLOGY OF CHROMIUM AND LIF MEASUREMENT OF ATOMIC ARSENIC IN LAMINAR DIFFUSION FLAMES

  • The morphology and size distribution of chromium oxides and the concentration measurement of atomic arsenic have been studied in laminar diffusion flames. Nitrogen was added to vary flame temperatures in hydrogen flames. Ethene flames were used in order to investigate the potential for interaction between the soot aerosol that is formed in these flames and the chromium aerosol. Two sources of chromium compounds were introduced: chromium nitrate and chromium hexacarbonyl. A detailed investigation of the morphology was carried out by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The amounts of Cr(VI) and total Cr were determined by a spectrophotometric method and by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, respectively. Also, LIF was used for the measurement of atomic arsenic, which was excited at 197.2 nm and was detected at 249.6 nm. Results showed that the morphology of the particles varied with the flame temperature and with the chromium source. The particles were characterized by porous structures, cenospheres and agglomerated dense particles when chromium nitrate solution was added to the flames. At low to moderate temperatures, porous sintered cenospheric structures were formed, in some cases with a blow hole. At higher temperatures, an agglomerated cluster which was composed of loosely sintered submicron particles was observed. It was also found that the emission of Cr(VI) from the undiluted $H_2$ flame was more than 10 times larger than in the 50% $H_2$ / 50% $N_2$ flame on a mass basis. Single point LIF measurement of atomic arsenic indicated that arsenic exist only in the low temperature, fuel rich region.

중성자 방사화 분석법과 원자 분광법을 이용한 갯벌 시료 중 미량원소 분석법에 관한 연구 (Analysis of Trace Elements in Mud Flat with Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA) and Atomic Spectroscopy)

  • 남해연안 갯벌 속에 있는 무기원소들의 정량을 위해 중성자 방사화 분석법과 ICP-AES를 적용하였다. 중성자 방사화 분석법과 ICP=AES에 의하여 얻어진 Al, Ca, Fe, Mg, K, Na의 분석결과들을 상호 비교하였다. 결과적으로 침전물 중의 미량 원소를 분석하는데 ICP-AES보다 중성자 방사화 분석법이 더 우수한 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 중성자 방사화 분석법은 갯벌과 같은 복잡한 모체를 갖는 환결시료들의 분석헤서 중요한 역할을 할 것이다.

방사선에 대한 CdTe/CdS 태양전지 특성 검토 (Property of CdTe/CdS Solar Cells on Gamma-irradiation)

  • In this study, we prepared CdTe/CdS solar cells using a thermal vacuum evaporation method. In particular, $CdCl_2$ treatment was attempted using this same method at $400^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. The prepared CdTe/CdS solar cells were investigated using Fouier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and a solar simulator system including light absorption properties, morphological properties, and power conversion efficiency (PCE). In addition, we investigated the gamma-irradiation treatment at dose rates of 0 Gy, 500 Gy, 1 kGy, 10 kGy, and 30 kGy. The characteristics of gamma-irradiation treatment were studied based on the same method described above. In particular, it showed increased values as 0.826% higher than the non-irradiation of 0.448% from PCE analysis.

Characterization of Groundwater Colloids From the Granitic KURT Site and Their Roles in Radionuclide Migration

  • The fundamental characteristics of groundwater colloids, such as composition, concentration, size, and stability, were analyzed using granitic groundwater samples taken from the KAERI Underground Research Tunnel (KURT) site by such analytical methods as inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, field emission-transmission electron microscopy, a liquid chromatography-organic carbon detector, and dynamic light scattering technique. The results show that the KURT groundwater colloids are mainly composed of clay minerals, calcite, metal (Fe) oxide, and organic matter. The size and concentration of the groundwater colloids were 10-250 nm and 33-64 ㎍·L-1, respectively. These values are similar to those from other studies performed in granitic groundwater. The groundwater colloids were found to be moderately stable under the groundwater conditions of the KURT site. Consequently, the groundwater colloids in the fractured granite system of the KURT site can form stable radiocolloids and increase the mobility of radionuclides if they associate with radionuclides released from a radioactive waste repository. The results provide basic data for evaluating the effects of groundwater colloids on radionuclide migration in fractured granite rock, which is necessary for the safety assessment of a high-level radioactive waste repository.

Analysis of Zirconium and Nickel Based Alloys and Zirconium Oxides by Relative and Internal Monostandard Neutron Activation Analysis Methods

  • Background: The chemical characterization of metallic alloys and oxides is conventionally carried out by wet chemical analytical methods and/or instrumental methods. Instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) is capable of analyzing samples nondestructively. As a part of a chemical quality control exercise, Zircaloys 2 and 4, nimonic alloy, and zirconium oxide samples were analyzed by two INAA methods. The samples of alloys and oxides were also analyzed by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) and direct current Arc OES methods, respectively, for quality assurance purposes. The samples are important in various fields including nuclear technology. Methods: Samples were neutron irradiated using nuclear reactors, and the radioactive assay was carried out using high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometry. Major to trace mass fractions were determined using both relative and internal monostandard (IM) NAA methods as well as OES methods. Results: In the case of alloys, compositional analyses as well as concentrations of some trace elements were determined, whereas in the case of zirconium oxides, six trace elements were determined. For method validation, British Chemical Standard (BCS)-certified reference material 310/1 (a nimonic alloy) was analyzed using both relative INAA and IM-NAA methods. Conclusion: The results showed that IM-NAA and relative INAA methods can be used for nondestructive chemical quality control of alloys and oxide samples.

지질시료 중의 U과 Th 분석 및 자연방사성동위원소 측정을 위한 화학적 분리 (A Sequential Separation Procedure for the Determination of Uranium, Thorium and Their Isotopes in Geological Materials)

  • 지질시료 중의 U과 Th을 유도결합플라즈마 원자방출분광법으로 정량하기 위해 시료를 혼산으로 분해하고 TTA(thenoyltrifluoroacetone)와 TOA (tri-n-octylamine) 추출제를 이용하여 계통적으로 용매추출한 다음 HCl 용액으로 역추출하여 분리하였다. 표준암석 NIST SRM 278에 대한 분석결과는 NIST 및 다른 비파괴분석 결과와 비교하여 양호하였다. 알파선분광법으로 U과 Th의 자연방사성 동위원소를 측정하기 위해 추출분리한 각각을 음이온교환크로마토그래피로 정제하였다.

  • 대기환경시료인 도시분진시료와 인공적으로 준비한 휠터상 도시분진시료중의 미량원소를 중성자방사화분석법을 사용하여 비파괴 분석하였다. 분석정도관리를 위하여 미국 표준기술원의 인증표준시료 (Urban Dust, NIST SRM 1648)를 이용하였다. 37종의 검출된 원소의 상대오차와 상대 표준편차를 계산하였으며 각각 10%와 15%이내이었다. 도시분진시료로부터 29종의 원소, 휠터상 도시분진시료로부터 21종의 원소를 정량하였다. 측정결과의 신뢰도 및 숙련도 평가를 위하여, 중성자방사화분석법, 하전입자유도 X-선방출분광법, X-선 형광분석법과 원자흡수분광법을 이용한 세계 39개 실험실이 참여한 실험실간 비교시험에 참여하였으며 수집된 결과를 통계처리하였다. 평균값과 표준편차로 계산한 z-score는 몇개의 원소를 제외하고 모두 -1

  • 이산화우라늄-이산화가돌리늄 핵연료를 질산으로 녹인 다음 우라늄 매트릭스로부터 가돌리늄을 분리하지 않고 유도결합플라스마 원자방출분광기(ICP-AES)로 바로 정량할 수 있는 분석조건을 검토하였다. 가돌리늄 분석에 미치는 우라늄의 분광학적 간섭 정도를 가돌리늄 스펙트럼으로부터 비교, 평가한 결과 336.223 nm의 파장이 분석선으로서 가장 적합하였다. 우라늄 매트릭스로부터 가돌리늄을 음이온 교환수지(Bio-Rad AG $1{\times}8$)로 분리한 다음 ICP-AES로 측정한 값과 바로 측정한 값을 견주어 본 결과, 상대편차는 5 % 범위 내에서 잘 일치하였다. 따라서 본 방법으로 핵연료($UO_2-Gd_2O_3$)에 함유되어 있는 5~10 wt.%의 가돌리늄을 분리 과정없이 바로 ICP-AES로 정량할 수 있었다.

  • 수소화물 발생장치를 사용한 유도결합플라즈마 원자방출분광법(ICP-AES)으로 머리카락 시료 중에 함유된 미량의 Se와 Bi의 분석에 관해 연구하였다. 기체상태의 수소화물 측정시 ICP의 최적 측정조건은 시료운반기체의 유속은 0.6~0.8L/min, 관측위치는 유도코일로부터 6mm 높이였다. 수소화물 생성효율이 최대를 나타내는 염산농도는 $NaBH_4$와 NaOH를 각각 2.5% 사용할 때 1.5M 이상일 때였으며, 2.5% $NaBH_4$와 0.1% $NaBH_4$를 사용할 때는 약 O.5M 이상일 때였다. 분석과정에서 Cu와 Ni 같은 전이금속으로부터의 심한 방해영향이 관찰되었고, lanthanum hydroxide로 Se와 Bi를 공침시켜 방해영향을 제거하였다.

유구(維鳩)-광천(廣川) 금은광화대지역(金銀鑛化帶地域)에서의 토양(土壤) 및 농작물(農作物)의 중금속오염(重金屬汚染) (Heavy Metal Contamination of Soils and Crop Plants in the Yugu-Kwangcheon Au-Ag Metallogenic Province)

  • Yugu-Kwangcheon Au-Ag Province is connected to the southwestern part of the Cheonan Province and includes the Gubong (one of the biggest gold mine in past), Daebong and Samgwang mines. Cadmium concentrations in sphalerite of Yugu-Kwancheon Province is higher than those of other Au-Ag provinces and could be the source of the heavy metal contaminations. Heavy metals are present in rock-soil-plant-human system from natural geological materials, and dietary intake through this system makes a significant contribution to the ingestion of heavy metals by man. In order to examine the degree and extent of heavy metal contaminations in the Gubong, Daebong and Samgwang mine areas of Yugu-Kwangcheon Province, soil, stream water, sediment and crop plant samples were taken and analyzed for Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn by Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS) and Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry (ICP-AES). Cadmium and Pb concentrations in paddy/farm soils and stream sediments from the Gubong and Samgwang mine areas are higher than those in uncontaminated soils. Lead concentrations in crop plants cultivated in these soils are high up to $0.38{\mu}g/g$ in rice grain and $4.5{\mu}g/g$ in sesame. In these mine areas, regular consumption of crop plants by the local population would seem to pose a potential health problems from long-term Pb exposure. The biological absorption coefficient in rice grain for heavy metals varies in the order $C_d=Zn>Cu>Pb$ and the relationship between Cd concentrations in soils and crop plants is expressed by the equation $Cd_{plant}=0.11245\;Log\;Cd_{soil}+0.13472$.
