  • The bullet shape of the plasma jet using the atmospheric-pressure dielectric barrier discharge method changes depending on the applied fluid rate and the intensity of the electric field. This changes appear as a difference in spectral distribution due to a difference in density of the DBD plasma jet. It is an important factor in utilizing the plasma device that difference between the occurrence of active species and the intensity through the analysis of the spectrum of the generated plasma jet. In this paper, a plasma jet generator of the atmospheric pressure volume DBD method using Ar gas was make a prototype in accordance with the proposed design method. The characteristics jet fluid rate analysis of Ar gas was accomplished through simulation to determine the dependence of flow rate for the generation of plasma jets, and the characteristics of plasma jets using spectrometers were analyzed in the prototype system to generate optimal plasma jet bullet shapes through MFC flow control. Through the design method of the proposed system, the method of establishing the optimal plasma jet characteristics in the device and the results of active species on the EOS were verified.

  • A reticulated PU-g-PAAc foam was modified through the surface treatment of PU foam by one atmospheric pressure plasma. The synthesized PU-g-PAAc foam was prepared for the purpose of immobilizing microbial organisms. We also attempted different plasma treatment methods including simple plasma treatment, plasma induced grafting and plasma induced grafting followed by plasma re-treatment. The effect of grafting on equilibrium water content (EWC) of PU forms was examined by swelling measurements. Adhesion test was performed to investigate the effect of different plasma treatment methods on the improvement of microbial immobilization. Two foams modified by plasma induced grafting and plasma re-treatment after grafting showed 2.7 and 3.0 fold higher microbial immobilization than unmodified one, respectively. Meanwhile, simple plasma treatment showed a little enhancement. FT-IR analysis of each sample verified the contribution of surface functional groups on the enhancement of microbial immobilization. SEM observation confirmed microbial adherence.

  • Plasma spray forming is recently explored as a near-net-shape fabrication route for ultra-high temperature metals and ceramics. In this study, monolithic tungsten has been produced using an atmospheric plasma spray forming and subsequent high temperature sintering. The spray-formed tungsten preform from different processing parameters has been evaluated in terms of metallurgical aspects, such as density, oxygen content and hardness. A well-defined lamellae structure was formed in the as-sprayed deposit by spreading of completely molten droplets, with incorporating small amounts of unmelted/partially-melted particles. Plasma sprayed tungsten deposit had 84-87% theoretical density and 0.2-0.3 wt.% oxygen content. Subsequent sintering at 2500$^{\circ}C$ promoted the formation of equiaxed grain structure and the production of dense preform up to 98% theoretical density.

  • Plasma is generated by electrical discharge. Most plasma generation has been carried out at low-pressure gas typically less than one millionth of atmospheric pressure. Plasmas are in general generated from impact ionization of neutral gas molecules by accelerated electrons. The energy gain of electrons accelerated in an electrical field is proportional to the mean free path. Electrons gain more energy at low-pressure gas and generate plasma easily by ionization of neutrals, because the mean free path is longer. For this reason conventional plasma generation is carried out at low pressures. However, many practical applications require plasmas at high-pressure. In order to avoid the requirement for vacuum pumps, researchers in Korea start to develop plasmas in high-pressure chambers where the pressure is 1 atmosphere or greater. Material processing, environmental protection/restoration and improved energy production efficiency using plasmas are only possible for inexpensive bulk plasmas. We thus generate plasmas by new methods and plan to set foundations for new plasma technologies for $21^{st}$ / century industries. This technological research will play a central role in material processing, environmental and energy production industries.

  • Plasma process has great possibilities to remove SOx, NOx simultaneously with high treatment efficiency and is expected to be suitable for small or middle plants. It was accomplished to evaluate SO2, NOx control possibility and achieve basic data to control pollutants by use of Surface Discharge Induced Plasma Chemical Process (SPCP) in this study. O3 generation characteristics by discharge of a plate was proportional to O2 concentration and power consumption and inversely proportional to temperature and humidity, In case of dry air, NOx was highly generated by N2 and O2 in air during the plasma discharge process but it was decreased considerably as H2O was added. SO2 removal efficiency was very high, and removal rate was 170,350 mEA at 30,50 watt respectively in flue gas which is usually contain HIO. NOx removal efficiency was about 57% at 40 watt power consumption with 7.5% humidity. It is estimated that H2O has an important role in reaction mechanism with pollutants according to plasma discharge.

  • A microstructure array has been proposed for micro plasma generation using electroplating and double exposed process. A stable atmospheric plasma has been generated at a low voltage by utilizing the micro electrode gap. Self-aligned microstructure can provide uniform electrode overlap with precisely controlled gap between the electrodes. The proposed structure allows for triode operation, which can expand the generated plasma over a large area by applying a lateral electric field. Electrical characteristics of the micro triode confirm the large numbers of the plasma ions are drifted to the secondary cathode by the lateral electrical field.

  • A non-thermal micron size plasma needle is applicable for medical treatment because it includes radicals, charged particles, ultraviolet emission, and strong electric fields. The electric fields around the plasma needle device driven by a radio frequency wave are investigated in order to calculate the power delivered to the cell. A commercial multi-physics code, CFD-ACE, was utilized for the calculation of electric fields for the optimization of the needle structure. The electric field and energy absorption profiles are presented with the variation of the device structure and the distance between the needle and tissues. The living tissues effectively absorb the radio frequency power from the plasma needle device with the covered pyrex structure.

  • Polypropylene fiber has the advantages of light weight, heat retention and antibacterial properties, but it is difficult to expand its market because it cannot be dyed or imparted functionality due to its hydrophobic properties. Atmospheric pressure plasma processing can modify the surface of the fiber and create polar functional groups on the surface of the fiber. In this study, an experiment was conducted on the hydrophilization of the ultra-hydrophobicity of polypropylene through plasma processing and surface changes before and after plasma processing. The ultra-hydrophobicity of polypropylene is the cause of impossible for dyeing and imparting functionality. Untreated polypropylene became hydrophilic, and it was confirmed that the ratio of oxygen and carbon(O/C) increased about 11 times from untreated polypropylene 0.017 to plasma-treated polypropylene 0.190.

  • Currently, teeth whitening method which is applicable to dental surgery is that physician expertises give medical treatment to teeth directly dealed with a high concentration of hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide. If hydrogen peroxide concentration is too high for treatment of maximized teeth whitening effect [1], it is harmful to the human body [2]. To the maximum effective and no harmful teeth whitening effect in a short period of time at home, we have observed the whitening effect using carbamide peroxide (15%) and a low-temperature atmospheric pressure plasma jet which is regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. The gas supplied conditions of the non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma jet was with the humidified (0.6%) gas in nitrogen or air at gas flow rate of 1000 sccm. Also, the measurement of chemical species from the jet was carried out using the optical emission spectroscopy (OES), the evidence of increased reactive oxygen species compared to non-humidified plasma jet. We have found that the whitening effect of the plasma is very excellent through this experiment, when bovine teeth are treated in carbamide peroxide (15%) and water vapor (0.2 to 1%). The brightness of whitening teeth was increased up to 2 times longer in the CIE chromaticity coordinates. The colorimetric spectrometer (CM-3500d) can measure color degree of whitening effect.
