  • The lubrication characteristics of high-speed ball bearings at oil-starvation have been investigated empirically using the bearings employed in small industrial gas turbine engines. For the close structural simulation, experiments carried our with bearing mounting supports of real engines, such as bearing housings and oil nozzle assemblies with squeeze film dampers. Thus the results of tests can be applied to the design and the development of gas turbine engines. Testing was done by simulating the oil-starvation conditions in engines, such as stopping the oil-supply to the bearing during normal operating, starting without oil-supply at atmospheric temperature, and accelerating with oil-supply at atmospheric temperature. From this study, the relative comparison of the frictional resistance and the resistance due to the bearing cavity oil was demonstrated visually, and the resistance due to the bearing cavity oil was dominant in the resistance of bearing at high speed.

  • The lubrication characteristics of high-speed roller bearings at oil-starvation have been investigated empirically using the bearings employed in small industrial gas turbine engines. Testing was done by simulating the oil-starvation conditions in engines, such as stopping the oil-supply to the bearing during normal operating, starting without oil-supply at atmospheric temperature, and accelerating with oil-supply at atmospheric temperature. During testing, the temperature of bearing, the power consumption, and the rotating resistance of the bearing were measured. From this study, on the contrary to the ball bearing, it was found that the resistance of the bearing was higher at the regime of without oil-supply than that at the regime of with oil-supply, despite less power consumption.

  • Status of photochemical air pollution in the Greater Seoul Area (GSA) between 1990 and 1995 was assessed in terms of frequency distributions, number of days exceeding standards, average concentration and meteorological effects. In Seoul compared with other areas in Korea, daily maximum concentration was higher but average concentration was not so high due to lower daily minimum from April to October. The top 5th percentile was high especially in summer season. Average number of days exceeding 100 ppb at monitoring stations in GSA was highest in 1994, the hottest year, but it was only 4 days a year. Mean meteorological pattern of high ozone days could be summarized as low wind speeds, high temperatures, strong solar radiation, and low precipitation. Westerlies were more frequent on high ozone days and at Pangi station located in the eastside of GSA, both number of high ozone days and average concentration were high. Effect of precursor transport on the rise of ozone concentration was, however, not consistently important on the whole in GSA.

  • Vents at outer walls of a large factory building are very important for natural ventilation. But, if a full-open vent is used, rain comes through the vents. We tried to utilize the natural ventilation effectively using a louver. A 1/120 scale-down building model was placed inside an atmospheric boundary layer simulated in a wind tunnel test section. The effect of louver angle on the ventilation flow inside the factory building was investigated experimentally. Instantaneous velocity fields inside the building model were measured using a 2-frame PIV system with varying the louver angles ($\theta=20^{\circ},\;40^{\circ},\;60^{\circ}$). For the case of $\theta=60^{\circ}$, as the incoming flow into the factory building increases, the inside velocity distribution becomes uniformly.

  • Saltation is the most important mechanism of wind-blown sand transport. Till now the interaction between wind and sand has not been fully understood. In this study the saltation of sand sample taken from Taklimakan desert was tested in a simulated atmospheric boundary layer. The captured particle images containing both the tracers for wind and saltating sand, were separated by a digital phase mask technique. Both PIV and PTV methods were employed to extract the velocity fields of wind and the dispersed sand particles, respectively. The mean streamwise wind velocity field and turbulent statistics with and without sand transportation were compared, revealing the effect of the moving sand on the wind field. This study is helpful to understand the interaction between wind and blown sand (in saltation), and provide reliable experimental data fur evaluating numerical models.

  • The dynamical evolution of globular clusters is studied using the orbit-averaged multicomponent Fokker-Planck equation. The original code developed by Cohn(1980) is modi-fied to include the effect of stellar evolutions. Plommer's model is chosen as the initial density distribution with the initial mass function index $\alpha$=0.25, 0.65, 1.35, 2.35, and 3.35. The mass loss rate adopted in this work follows that of Fusi-Pecci and Renzini(1976). The stellar mass loss acts as the energy source, and thus affects the dynamical evolution of globular clusters by slowing down the evolution rate and extending the core collapse time Tcc. And the dynamical length scale $$R_c, $$R_h is also extended. This represents the expansion of cluster due to the stellar mass loss.

  • In this study the effects of block distance have been investigated on the particle deposition efficiency in the collecting cell of two-stage electrostatic precipitator by numerical analysis. Particle trajectories have been changed by the electrostatic and inertial force of particle with the inlet velocity electrostatic number and particle diameter. The total deposition efficiency has a minimum value by the interaction between the effect of particle inertial force and electrostatic force in the collecting cell. The increase of block distance makes the total deposition efficiency decrease under the range of the particle size which has the minimum deposition efficiency. However beyond the range of particle size which has minimum deposition efficiency total deposition efficiency has no trend with the variation of block distance.

  • Recently, among after-treatment devices which have high possibility of utility, diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) is concerned over the world. DOC oxidizes pollutants by means of activate-reaction during by -passing in the catalyst, in doing so, conversion efficiency of PM, CO and HC is high, and this device does not have an effect on engine performance because back pressure is not nearly increased. But, as a small amount of sulfur content in fuel is oxidized, it makes sulfate, which is absorbed on the surface of catalyst. So, in this study, the experiment is carried out by means of using ordinary fuel (0.1wt%) and low sulfur fuel (0.05wt%) with DOC, and the emission gas of diesel engine is measured.

  • In order to study the effect of air pollution on the ventilatory function of lung, pulmonary function studies were carried out in middle school students (male) living isn Sasang industrial area more than 10 years, and were compared with those of control group. The following results were obtained; 1. Lung capacities were normal in observed & control group, and were not significantly different between two groups. 2. The respective parameters of ventilatory function test of observed group were smaller than that of control group, but FVC, $FEV_1$, $FEV_1/FVC$, FEF 25-75%, Vmax 50, MVV of two groups were normal. 3. PEFR, Vmax 25, Vmax 75 of observed group were significantly decreased, and there were statistically significant differences between two groups in FEF 25-75% (p < 0.01), Vmax 25 (p < 0.05), Vmax 50 (p < 0.01), Vmax 75 (p < 0.05), PEFR (p < 0.05) and MVV (p < 0.02).
