Effect of Seeding Date on Forage Yield and Chemical Composition of Echinochloa crusgalli var. Frumentacea(Roxb) Wight in Jeju Region (제주지역에서 파종기에 따른 청예피의 사료수량 및 조성분 변화)

  • In order to identify the growth characterization, the yield and chemical composition of Jeju barnyard grass (Echinochloa crusgalli var. fiurnentacea(Roxb) Wight) based on seeding date in Jeju region, seeding carried out the 10-day intervals from March 27 to September 30 in 2000, respectively. Plant height was 143.2 cm, showing the highest on seeding date, April 6 among that of any other seeding date. On the other hand, those of early and late seeding gradually decrease. Plant height was 119.2 an in May 16 seeding. The results of stem diameter, number of withering leaves, number of leaves and fresh weight per plant were similar to those of the plant heights. The yield of fresh, dry matter forage, crude protein and TDN found the highest on April 6 seeding, 63.5 MT/ha, 13.9 MTha, 1.1 MT/ha, and 7.6 MT/ha, respectively. In early and late seeding, the yield was gradually decreased. In seeding May 16, the yield found .38.2 MTIha in fresh forage, 6.2 MTha in dry matter forage, 0.7 MT/ha in crude protein and 3.7 MTha in TDN, respectively. According to delaying the seeding date, March 27 to May 16, the contents of crude protein (from 7.9 to 10.8%), ether extract (from 4.6 to 6.0%), nitrogen free extract (from 45.1 to 46.5%), and TDN (from 54.2 to 60.8%) were gradually increased, respectively. On the other hand, those of crude fiber (from 28.9 to 25.6%) and crud ash (from 13.5 to 11.2%) were decreased. These results showed that April 6 was the optimum seeding date with the sole object of feed production of Jeju barnyard grass under the environmental condition like as atmospheric phenomena and soil in Jeju region. Effect of Cooking Methods on the Qualities of Quick Cooking Rice (취반방법이 즉석쌀밥의 품질에 미치는 영향)

  • Quick cooking rice was produced by cooking raw, white long grain rice with three different methods which were atmospheric cooking in electric cooker, autoclaving and precooking followed by autoclaving. The drying rate curve showed that cooking methods affected little the drying pattern of the cooked rice except that precooking treatment before autoclaving retarded dehydration. The quick cooking rice prepared by precooking and autoclaving method among three cooking methods showed the fastest rehydration rate and took 7.5 minutes in reaching equilibrium moisture content by soaking in boiling water. And it had less hard and more cohesive texture than the milled rice cooked by conventional method and the quick cooking rice prepared by electric cooking when reconstituted. The microstructure of quick cooking rice was investigated among cooking methods.

Effects of Meteorological Factors on Water Temperature, Salinity in the West Sea of Korea (한국 서해에서 수온 및 염분에 미치는 기상 인자의 영향)

  • The effect of meteorological factors such as air temperature (AT), wind speed (WS), precipitation (Pre) on the variation of water temperature (WT) and salinity (Sal) in the West Sea of Korea for the period 1971 to 2001 was illustrated. As a result of this study, WT-AT, WT-Pre, and Sal-WS had positive correlation, reversely WT-WS, Sal-AT and Sal- Pre had negative correlation. In the surface layer, time lag between atmospheric factors and oceanographic factors was 0 to 4 months, on the other hand in the bottom layer, it was delayed 0 to 4 months compared to the surface. WT was affected by AT in the same year, but Sal was affected by precipitation in the previous year. The variation of WT and Sal was in harmony with change of wind speed.

  • Swirl injector with multi-stage tangential entry was analyzed to suppress high-frequency combustion instability in Liquid Rocket Engines. In order to analyze the effect of swirl injector as an acoustic absorber, swirl injector was regarded as a quarter-wave resonator and it's damping capacity is verified in atmospheric temperature. It has a finite mode of vibration and natural frequencies which can be tuned to the natural frequencies of a model combustion chamber. When the targeted injector for each modes is located at anti-node point, the amplitude of modes was decreased. And when the injector of large diameter is mounted, the split of mode which accompanies the decrease of amplitude appeared. From the experimental data, it is proved that if the location of injector mounted is located at an anti-node position of the targeted modes with proper volume, the amplitude of modes is decreased and the split of modes occurs at anti-node point.

  • Flow characteristics of a differential pressure flow meters which have a shape of triangular separate bar (TSB) was investigated according to machining conditions in pressure tapping holes. Size of pressure tapping holes is machined with either 1.0 mm or 1.5 mm in diameter. Also, number of pressure tapping holes are drilled either 9 or 17. The mass flow rate of the TSB flow meters are calibrated with a laminar flow meter by connecting them in line. The mass flow rate in the TSB flow meters are plotted with a non-dimensional parameter H which includes the gas temperature, exhaust gas pressure and differential pressure at the flow meters, and atmospheric pressure. An empirical correlation between the mass flow rate at the TSB flow meter and the non-dimensional parameter H was obtained. The empirical correlation showed highly linear relationship between the mass flow rate and the non-dimensional parameter H. The hole size of the pressure tapping holes has a bigger effect on the flow rate than the number of the tapping holes.

  • The activities of Ni(20wt%)/$La_2O_3$, Ni(20wt%)/${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$, and Ni(20wt%)/$SiO_2$ catalyst for $CO_2$ reforming of $CH_4$ were investigated in a fixed bed flow reactor under atmospheric condition. Catalyst characterization using XRD, TEM, SEM, BET analysis were also conducted. The catalytic activity of Ni(20wt%)/$La_2O_3$ catalyst has relatively superior to that of Ni(20wt%)/${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ and Ni(20wt%)/$SiO_2$ catalyst. The good activity of Ni(20wt%)/$La_2O_3$ catalyst seems to depend on reduced $Ni^{\circ}$ phases of NiO($\rightarrow$ Ni + O), $LaNiO_3$($\rightarrow$ $Ni+La_2O_3$), Ni crystalline phases, and decoration of Ni phases by lanthanum species is also an important factor. Ni(20wt%)/${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ and Ni(20wt%)/$SiO_2$ catalyst due to surface acidity resulted in the deposition of wisker type and encapsulate carbon on the surface of catalyst, but Ni(20wt%)/$La_2O_3$ catalyst did not show carbon on the surface of catalyst up to 8.5hr reaction.

Color Developing Capacity of Plasma-treated Water as a Source of Nitrite for Meat Curing

  • The interaction of plasma with liquid generates nitrogen species including nitrite (NO2). Therefore, the color developing capacity of plasma-treated water (PTW) as a nitrite source for meat curing was investigated in this study. PTW, which is generated by surface dielectric barrier discharge in air, and the increase of plasma treatment time resulted in increase of nitrite concentration in PTW. The PTW used in this study contains 46 ppm nitrite after plasma treatment for 30 min. To evaluate the effect of PTW on the cured meat color, meat batters were prepared under three different conditions (control, non-cured meat batter; PTW, meat batter cured with PTW; Sodium nitrite, meat batter cured with sodium nitrite). The meat batters were vacuum-packaged and cooked in a water-bath at 80℃ for 30 min. The typical color of cured meat developed in cooked meat batter treated with sodium nitrite or PTW. The lightness (L*) and yellowness (b*) values were similar in all conditions, whereas, the redness (a*) values of cooked meat batter with PTW and sodium nitrite (p<0.05) were significantly higher than the control. These data indicate that PTW can be used as a nitrite source in the curing process of meat without addition of other nitrite sources.

  • A global trend of replacing metal or glass containers with polymer-based packaging materials has been prevalent in the food packaging industry due to their ease in processibility, excellent transparency, and good cost efficiency. Barrier polymers tend to show low permeabilities for atmospheric gases such as oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water vapor, which allow them to be utilized in the food and beverage packaging industry. With the current global trend, expansion of polymeric packaging materials to new markets such as oxygen sensitive juices, flavored water, and energy drinks requires improved $CO_2$ and $O_2$ barrier properties. The improvement of the existing polymer-based barrier platform will enable a rapid market impact. In this paper, the current barrier technologies such as (1) antiplasticization-induced barrier materials, (2) synergistic effect of antiplasticization and crystallization, (3) new barrier polymers, (4) nanocomposite materials, and (5) polymer blending are introduced with their characterization techniques for the development of advanced packaging materials.

Changes of Sugars and Their Related Enzymes in Tomato Fruits during the Storage of Subatmospheric Pressure (감압저장 중 Tomato과실의 당과 그에 관련되는 효소의 변화)

  • In this experiment, the changes in the components of carbohydrate and their enzyme activities were investigated to study the conversion of sugars in tomato under sub-atmospheric pressure storage .The results obtained are as follows: The soluble sugars in tomato fruits were, for the most part, fructose and glucose together with small quantity of sucrose and maltose. The content of fructose increased throughout the storage, while that of glucose increased at an early stage but decreased at the latter part, and that of sucrose decreased drastically with progress of storage. The activity of ${\alpha}-amylase$ and invertase playing important roles in conversion of sugars showed a rapid increase at onset of respiration climacteric, resulting that the content of total soluble sugar showed a tendency to decrease strikingly, whereas those of starch and sucrose to decrease rapidly. Thus, the effect of temperature was more pronounced than that of pressure.

  • Atmospheric pressure plasma treatment on carbon nanotube (CNT) surfaces was performed to modify reinforcement effect and interfacial adhesion of carbon fiber reinforced CNT-phenolic composites. The surface changes occurring on CNT treated with plasma were analyzed by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscope (FT-IR). The significant improvement of wettability on CNT was confirmed by static contact angle test after plasma treatment. Such plasma treatment resulted in a decrease in the advancing contact angle from $118^{\circ}$ to $60^{\circ}$. The interfacial adhesion between carbon fiber and CNT-phenolic composites increased by plasma treatment based on apparent modulus test results during quasi-static tensile strength. Furthermore, the proposed database offers valuable knowledge for evaluating interfacial shear strength (IFSS).
