As North Korea's asymmetric threats are growing, there have been numerous discussions to find out effective counter-measures and many official plans and procurements efforts have been established. However, discussions on ROK Navy's roles in countering North Korea's asymmetric threats have been taken place very limitedly. Decision makers and military planners put enormous efforts in getting counter-measures, however, most of the options on the table are systems of Army and Air Force. This is true if one looks at components of Kill-Chain, KAMD, and KMPR. With worsening security environment of the Korean peninsula, it has been said by many commentators that ROK Navy needs to consider expanding its roles in countering against North Korea's asymmetric military threats. They asked ROK Navy to go beyond the mind-set that has confined Navy's roles in deterring North Korean naval threats. That is, ROK Navy should fight 'from the sea' as well as fight 'on the sea.' If ROK Navy begins to think about fight 'from the sea,' there would be many possibilities for the Navy to be a part of countering North Korea's asymmetric military threats. In order to pursue proactive roles in countering North Korea's asymmetric threat, ROK Navy needs to consider various options. Massive missile forces, nuclear-propelled submarines, naval special forces may be some of them. With those measures, ROK Navy would launch massive and decisive attacks from the sea without risking survivability of our forces. Considering North Korean Navy's weakness, it is very probable that sea would be safer place than ground or sky. Expanding ROK Navy's roles and being a proactive deterrent forces against North Korean asymmetric threats would provide very reliable counter-measures to South Korean military. Thus, military planners should think how to take the best advantage of expanded ROK Navy's roles and capabilities against North Korean asymmetric threats.

This paper presents an experimental investigation of asymmetric impact effects on hydroelastic responses. A 1:64 scaled segmented ship model with U-shape open cross-section backbone was newly designed to meet elastic similarity conditions of vertical, horizontal and torsional stiffness simultaneously. Different wave heading angles and wavelengths were adopted in regular wave test. In head wave condition, parametric rolling phenomena happened along with asymmetric slamming forces, the relationship between them was disclosed at first time. The impact forces on starboard and port sides showed alternating asymmetric periodic changes. In oblique wave condition, nonlinear springing and whipping responses were found. Since slamming phenomena occurred, high-frequency bending moments became an important part in total bending moments and whipping responses were found in small wavelength. The wavelength and head angle are varied to elucidate the relationship of springing/whipping loads and asymmetric impact. The distributions of peaks of horizontal and torsional loads show highly asymmetric property.
Flow around a guided missile in high maneuver, i.e. at a high angle of attack, shows complex phenomena. It is well known that even in geometrically symmetric conditions the flow around a missile at high angles of attack can generate unexpected large side forces and yaw moments due to asymmetric vortices. In this paper, a CFD code (FLUENT) based on the Navier-Stokes equations was used for the numerical analysis to find a suitable numerical mechanism for generation of asymmetric vortices. It is shown that a numerical technique of applying different surface roughness to a specific area of the missile nose surface gives the best fit in comparison with the experimental results. In addition, a numerical investigation of variations of side forces and pressure distributions with angle of attack and roll angle was conducted for the purpose of identifying the source of vortex asymmetries.

Numerical investigation of asymmetric vortices at high angles of attack subsonic flow is performed using three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations. A small bump has been carefully selected and attached near the nose of an ogive cylinder to simulate symmetric vortices. Selected bump shape does develop asymmetric vortices and is verified using Lamont's experimental results. By changing the angle of attack, Reynolds numbers, and Mach numbers, the characteristics of asymmetric vortices are observed. The angle of attack which contributes significantly to the generation of asymmetric vortices are over 30 degrees. By increasing Mach number and Reynolds number asymmetric vortices, hence the side forces show decreasing trend..
Vibration of disk drive spindle is one of the major limiting factors in achieving higher track densities in hard disk drives. Vibration of a BLDC motor is a coupled phenomenon between mechanical characteristics and magnetic origins through the motor air-gap. In this paper, radial magnetic forces for symmetric and asymmetric BLDC motor are calculated with respect to the various rotor eccentricity using analytic method. Based on the results of the radial magnetic forces, transient whirl responses of the spindle motor are analyzed using finite element and transfer matrices. Results show that an asymmetric motor has a worse effects on unbalanced magnetic forces and vibration when mechanical and magnetic coupling exists.
This study proposes a new vibration control approach for adjacent twin structures, which is termed as viscous damper asymmetric coupling system in this paper. The proposed system takes a concept that the diagonal bracing viscous dampers are asymmetrically distributed in two buildings to break the behavior symmetry of the twin buildings and then the coupling viscous damper is additionally installed at the top floor of the two buildings to couple both buildings and interactively transfer the asymmetric behavior-caused damping forces into both buildings. These asymmetric damping distributions and interacting damping forces of the connection damper efficiently suppress the overall vibration of the damper-coupled adjacent twin buildings efficiently. Genetic algorithm (GA) based multi-objective optimization technique is adopted for optimal design of the proposed system. In the numerical example of adjacent twin 10-story building structures, the conventional control approach, that is, uniform damping distribution system (UDS) is also taken into account for comparison purpose. The optimization results verify that the proposed system either can improve the control performance over the UDS with the same damping capacity, or can save the damping capacity significantly while maintaining the similar level of control performance to the UDS.

The purpose of this study was to compare the force, the displacement and the stress distribution on the maxillary first molars altered by the application of various asymmetric head-gear. For this study, the finite element models of unilateral Cl II maxillary dental arch was made. Also, the finite element models of asymmetric face-bow was made. Three types of asymmetric face-bow were made : each of the right side 15mm, 25mm and 35mm shorter than the left side. We compared the forces, the displacement and the distribution of stress that were generated by application of various asymmetric head-gear, The results were as follows. 1. The total forces that both maxillary first molars received were similar in all groups. But the forces that mesially positioned tooth received were increased as the length of the outer-bow shortened, and the forces that normally positioned tooth received were decreased as the length of the outer-bow shortened. 2. In lateral force comparison, the buccal forces that normally positioned tooth received were increased as the length of the outer-bow shortened, and the buccal fortes that mesially positioned tooth received were decreased as the length of the outer-bow shortened. Though the net lateral force moved to the buccal side of normally positioned tooth as the length of the outer-bow shortened, both maxillary first molars received the buccal force. That showed 'Avchiai Expansion Effect' 3. The distal forces, the extrusion forces and the magnitudes of the crown distal tipping that mesially positioned tooth received were increased as the length of the outer-bow shortened, and the forces that normally positioned tooth received were decreased as the length of the outer-bow was shortened. 4. The magnitude of the distal-in rotation that normally positioned tooth received were increased as the length of the outer-bow was shortened. But, mesially positioned tooth show two different results. For the outer-bow 15mm shortened, mesially positioned tooth showed the distal-in rotation, hut for the outer-bow 25mm and 35mn shortened, mesially positioned tooth showed the distal-out rotation. Thus, the turning point exists between 15mm and 25mm. 5. This study of the initial stress distribution of the periodontal ligament at slightly inferior of the furcation area revealed that the compressive stress in the distobuccal root of the normally positioned tooth moved from the palatal side to the distal side and the buccal side successively as the length of the outer-bow shortened. 6. This study of the initial stress distribution of the periodontal ligament at slightly inferior of the furcation area revealed that the magnitudes of stress were altered but the total stress distributions were not altered in the mesiobuccal root and the palatal root of normally positioned tooth, and also three roots of mesially positioned tooth as the length of the outer-bow shortened.

In this paper, the effect of permanent magnet overhang structure on the characteristics in Brushless DC motor has analyzed quantitatively. We classified the overhang structure as symmetric and asymmetric. 3D equivalent magnetic circuit network (EMCN) method which uses the permeance as the distributive variable is used for the efficient analysis of magnetic field. The overhang effect which increases the linkage flux at the stator is verified by comparison between overhang and no overhang structure. In addition, it is known that no load back electro motive force (EMF) is also increased due to the overhang effect. In case of asymmetric overhang structure, the ratio effect of the upper to lower overhang length on the magnetic forces is analyzed. Form the analysis results, the variation of the asymmetric overhang ratio has a significant effect on the axial magnetic force except the radial and tangential magnetic forces. The validity of the analysis results is also clarified by comparison between calculated results and measured ones such as back EMF and cogging torque.
This paper presents the influence of incident angles of earthquakes on inelastic dynamic responses of asymmetry single story buildings under seismic ground motions. The dynamic responses such as internal forces and rotational ductility factor are used to evaluate the importance of the incident angles of ground motions in the inelastic range of structural behavior. The base shear and torque (BST) response histories of the resisting elements and of the building are used to prove that the shape of the BST surface of the building can be a practical tool to represent those of all resisting elements. This paper also shows that the different global forces which produce the maximum demands in the resisting elements tend to converge toward a single distribution in a definable intensity range, and this single distribution is related to the resistance distribution of the building.
The complex modal testing methods developed for asymmetric rotors are briefly discussed and their performances are experimentally evaluated. For the experiments, a laboratory test rotor is excited by using a newly developed, cost effective magnetic exciter equipped with Hall sensors, which measure the excitation forces. It is concluded that the exciter system is characterized by a wide bandwidth and a high resolution for both the excitation and force measurement, and that the one-exciter/two-sensor technique for complex modal testing of asymmetric rotors is superior to the standard two-exciter/two-sensor technique in terms of practicality and realization.
