Objectives: Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) is often comorbid with other psychiatric disorders in childhood. This study aimed to investigate comorbid psychiatric symptoms and associated factors in elementary school children with symptoms of ODD. Methods: The participants consisted of 205 mother-offspring pairs. Psychiatric symptoms were measured using the Diagnostic Predictive Scales and Korean Child Behavior Checklist. Psychiatric comorbid symptoms were compared between children with ODD symptom and those without ODD symptom. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the odds ratio of psychiatric symptom on ODD. Results: ODD group had a significant association with internalizing and externalizing problem (p=0.001, p<0.001, respectively). ODD group were more comorbid with anxiety disorder, depressive disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and conduct disorder. Among psychiatric disorder, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]=18.620, p<0.001) and conduct disorder (AOR=9.529, p=0.014) were associated with ODD symptom. Conclusion: These findings suggest that children with ODD symptom had significantly higher rates of comorbid psychiatric symptoms. And GAD and conduct disorder are related to ODD symptom.

Objective : The aim of this study is to evaluate the five-factor model of personality in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) related to obsessive-compulsive symptom severity and the distinct symptom subgroups. Methods : We recruited 95 patients with OCD and 116 normal controls in the study. We used the short version of Revised NEO Personality Inventory and the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS) for the assessment. Results : Patients with OCD showed significantly higher scores in neuroticism than normal controls. On multiple linear regression analysis, we found that agreeableness and conscientiousness were associated with the total Y-BOCS scores. On subscale analysis, agreeableness and neuroticism were associated with the obsession subscale scores and only conscientiousness was associated with the compulsion subscale scores. Furthermore, we found that patients who have contamination/cleaning or symmetry/ordering/counting/arranging as a main symptom presentation had significantly higher mean scores in conscientiousness than patients who have harm due to injury/violence/aggression as a main symptom presentation. Conclusion : In this study, we found that specific personality factors are associated with the obsessive-compulsive symptom severity. In addition, this is the first study to investigate the relationship between the personality factors in the five-factor model and the distinct symptom subgroups in OCD.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate association of depressive symptom, fatalism with selected health behaviors among people aged 50-69 with no physical limitation in Seoul. Methods: In 2012, data were collected using a household based interview survey in Seoul. One person in each selected household aged between 50 and 69 was selected and responded. Data analysis was based on 1,190 subjects who answered they do not have any physical activity limitation. Results: Multiple logistic regression analysis showed significant association among variables including perceived health, depressive symptom and fatalism scores on some health behaviors. Multiple regression analysis showed that selected health risk behaviors(current smoking, monthly alcohol consumption, no regular health exam in two years) were significantly associated with depressive symptom and fatality scores in addition to demographic variables. The final regression model's adjusted R square was about 0.235. Conclusion: Demographic variables such as gender, age and socioeconomic status were significant variables in health behaviors and these behavioral factors were associated with perceived health, depressive symptom and fatalistic views. As a conclusion, depressive symptom and fatalism should be monitored and intervened in health education practice.
Objectives: We attempted to study sleep habits and insomnia-associated factors in Korean rural adult population. Methods : In 1,441 adult subjects of three rural communities selected by cluster sampling, we administered an epidemiologic survey using questionnaire methods from July 14, 1996 to July 28, 1996. Results : 1) Mean sleep latency and mean time to sleep again after awakening during nocturnal sleep were longer in females than in males. Females suffered more frequently from insomnia symptom, awakening during nocturnal sleep. morning headache, dysphoric mood in the morning, and the feeling of 'not refreshed' on waking-up than males. 2) The older age group (defined as those older than 65 years) was found to have earlier bed-time, longer sleep latency, more frequent nocturia, longer time to sleep again after awakening during nocturnal sleep, and more frequent insomnia symptom. 3) The presence of insomnia symptom more than once a week was significantly associated with suffering from physical illness, being divorced-separated-widowed, frequently feeling depressed, nocturia, or low education level. 4) In multiple logistic regression analysis, old age, being female, low education level, frequently feeling depressed, and nocturia were independently associated with the presence of insomnia symptom more than once a week. Conclusion : We conclude that, in a Korean rural adult population, insomnia symptom increases with age and females usually suffer more from insomnia symptom than males. In addition, low education level, feeling depressed mood frequently, and nocturia are found to be significantly associated independently with the presence of insomnia symptom more than once a week.
The purpose of this study was to identify factors associated with self-care performance in hemodialysis patients based on the unpleasant symptom theory. Data were collected from 237 patients at five hemodialysis clinics in Seoul from March to April 2018. The results were evaluated by the SPSS/WIN 21.0 program. As a result, Self-care performance was positively correlated with hope, family support and medical support, but negatively correlated with emotional symptom experience and physical symptom experience. In multiple step regression analysis, family support, emotional symptom, and hope were independently associated with self-care performance, and the regression model explained 33.2% of the variances predicting self-care performance. The independent factors associated with self-care performance were family support, emotional symptom, and hope. Therefore, self-care performance may be improved by applying the hope program for the patient and the family.
It is well known that health and psychosocial factors are closely associated with depressive symptoms. Due to limitations in available data and analysis methods, however, little is known about the effects of health and psychosocial factors on depression trajectory. In order to address the limitations, this study examines the predictors of depression trajectory using latent growth curve modeling involving individuals aged 60 and over who participated in the Korean Welfare Panel Study (N=4,919). Controlling for socioeconomic variables, health and psychosocial variables were cross-sectionally associated with depressive symptoms, which is consistent with previous findings. However, the effects of health and psychosocial variables on the rate of depressive symptom change varied. Health variables were significantly associated with the levels of depressive symptoms at wave 1, but these were not significantly associated with the rate of depressive symptoms change. By contrast, although psychosocial variables were significantly associated with depressive symptoms at wave 1, the effects of psychosocial variables on the rate of depressive symptom change varied. Specifically, while self-esteem and family relationship were positively associated with the rate of depressive symptom change, social relationship was negatively associated with the rate of depressive symptom change. Based on the findings, this study discussed implications for intervention and future research.
Objectives : We investigated heart rate variability (HRV) patterns in patients with somatic symptom disorder (SSD) and the relationships of these patterns with alexithymia. Methods : In total, 42 patients with SSD and 33 healthy controls were enrolled in this study. Demographic, psychological, and HRV data were assessed at baseline, and 24 patients with SSD were reassessed after 6 months of treatment. The psychological data included somatic symptoms and levels of depression, anxiety, and alexithymia as indicated by the somatic symptom subscale of the Symptom Checklist 90-Revision (SCL-12), Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), and the Toronto Alexithymia Scale 20 (TAS-20), respectively. Results : Patients with SSD had a lower standard deviation of normal-to-normal R-R intervals (SDNN) and lower proportions of adjacent R-R intervals greater than 50 milliseconds (pNN50) compared with controls. These HRV parameters were negatively correlated with alexithymia severity. After treatment, patients exhibited significantly decreased levels of somatic symptoms and reduced anxiety and depression, but there were no significant differences in the HRV parameters. In patients with alexithymia, a high baseline SDNN and pNN50 were associated with a decrease in somatic symptoms. Conclusions : Patients with SSD have different HRV patterns, and several HRV parameters are associated with alexithymia severity. These findings suggest that ANS regulation is involved in the pathophysiology of SSD, mediated by alexithymia. Furthermore, these results suggest that certain HRV parameters may be associated with clinical outcomes of SSD.
Cucumber mosaic cucumovirus (CMV) is an isometric plant virus with functionally divided genomic RNAs and a broad host range. RNA 1 and RNA 2 each encode one protein, both of which are essential for replication. RNA 3 encodes the viral coat protein and an additional protein thought to be involved in potentiating the cell-to-cell movement of the virus. Functions of the RNAs have been confirmed using a pseudorecombinant virus constructed with infectious cDNA-derived transcripts of the RNAs. Generally, CMV produces different symptoms in various host plants depending on the virus strains. In this mini-review, we describe the potential role of the genes associated with symptom expression of CMV RNAs.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between psychosocial factors and symptom experience of patients with cardiovascular disease over a 6-month follow-up period. Method: Baseline data for each of the 138 patients were collected. Eighteen patients were dropped for a final total of 120 patients in the present study. To monitor patients' symptom experience after discharge, each patient was interviewed by telephone, and interviewed directly with a questionnaire at each clinic visit. Results: Mean scores for hostility, anger, anxiety, and depression were 51.63, 22.87, 48.95, and 41.21, respectively. Mean scores for the level of symptom experience at discharge, 3 months and 6 months after discharge were 32.83, 24.79, and 26.70, respectively. There were significant differences in the level of hostility by gender, BMI, job, and monthly income. Also the differences in the level of anxiety and depression were statistically significant according to gender and existence of spouse. In the regression analysis, depression was identified as the significant factor associated with symptom experience at discharge, 3 months, and 6 months after discharge. Conclusion: This study presented baseline data to elucidate whether psychosocial factors were associated with the progression of cardiovascular diseases. Accordingly, it suggests that nurses need to take into consideration psychosocial factor as well as physiological factor in symptom management for patients with cardiovascular disease.
A cross-sectional study was conducted to investigate the prevalence and risk factors for symptoms associated with sick building syndrome in four office buildings located in Seoul. Information on personal factors, job-related factors, and medical history were collected using self-administered questionnaires modified from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Indoor Air Quality questionnaire in 321 office workers in these buildings. The prevalence of general and irritant symptom groups was higher than the prevalence of dermatologic and respiratory symptom groups. Daily total work time, work time in the office, and work time with video display terminals (VDT) were identified as the risk factors for symptom groups associated with sick building syndrome by multiple linear logistic regression analysis. In conclusion, these results indicated that the symptom prevalence in this study is similar with the results reported from previous studies conducted in other countries and work time and work with VDT are related to sick building syndrome in Korea.
