  • This research aimed at to develop a quantitative assesment technique which uses the measured displacements at the excavated plane during tunnel construction. Tunnel structure has a feature with long extents comparing to the excavated section so that the tunnel safety assesment is more effective by using the measured data of displacements. Tunnel structures show different structural behaviors due to the mechanical characteristics of ground and supports themselves, excavation methods and construction methods of supports, etc. From this point of view, it has very important meanings on the practical aspects that the measured data from the construction cite represent the features of the interaction effects between ground and supports as they are. In this study, both the stress state and the properties of surrounding ground are analyzed by newly incorporated feedback analysis technique which can use the measured displacements directly. Then, the stress state and the properties of ground will be used to obtain the strain distribution of surrounding ground. Finally the tunnel safety can be assessed by comparing the estimated strain through the analysis to the allowable strain of ground quantitatively.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the future potential value of CTE(Critical Technology Element)s that are evaluated to be low in TRA(Technology Readiness Assesment) and to present investment prioritization technologies in defense R&D(Research and Development) based on them. To do this, we used the DEA(Data Envelopment Analysis) method, which is useful in evaluating the efficiency of the organization. Specifically, we suggest a systematic framework to evaluate the future value of CTEs by setting the CTEs derived from the TRA process to DMU(Decision Making Unit)s, the cost and time required to develop each CTE as the input factor of the DEA and the effects of the development of each CTE as the output factor of the DEA respectively. We also conducted an illustrative case study on radar technologies to demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed approach.

  • Photovoltaic and Thermal collector (PV/T) systems are renewable energy devices that can produce electricity and heat energy simultaneously using solar panels and heat exchangers. Since PV/T systems are exposed to the outdoors, their reliability is affected by various environmental factors. This paper presents a reliability test for a PV/T system and evaluates the test results. The reliability assessment entails performance, environment, safety, and life tests. The factor that had the greatest influence on the life of the system was the hydraulic pressure applied to the heat exchanger. A test was conducted by repeatedly applying pressure to the PV/T system, and a reliability analysis was conducted based on the test results. As a result, the shape parameter (β) value of 5.6658 and the B10life 308,577 cycles at the lower 95% confidence interval were obtained.

  • Objectives of this research were to fractionate heavy metals in soil samples in the upper Okdong River basin and to assess the potential pollution index of each metal fraction. Soil samples were collected from the cultivated land soils and analyzed for physical and chemical properties. pH of cultivated soils ranged from 5.2 to 7.6. Contents of total kelhaldal nitrogen and loss on ignition were in the ranges of 0.6∼2.5%, and 1.9∼12.9%, respectively. Heavy metals in the cultivated land soils were higher in the abandoned closed coal mine near field soils than those in the paddy soils. Total concentrations of metals in the cultivated land soils were in the orders of Zn > Pb > Ni > Cu > Cd, exceed the corrective action level of the Soil Environment Conservation Law and higher than the naturals were abundance levels reported from uncontaminated cultivated land soils. Mobile fractions of metals were relatively small compared to the total concentrations. Soil Pollution Assesment Index (SPAI) values of each fraction of metals were leveled from Non polluted to Moderately polluted based on total concentrations. SPAI values of mobil fractions were lower than those of immobile fractions. Results on metal fractions and SPAI values of the cultivated land soils indicate that field soils samples were contaminated with heavy metals and had potential to cause a detrimental effects on plants. A prompt countermeasure to prevent field soils in the abandoned closed coal mine near fields are urgently needed.

  • This study investigated the environmental risk for up-cycling of air-cooled ladle furnace slag (LFS) and evaluated the mortar compressive strength of binary and ternary blended cements using LFS of 3, 5, 10 wt%. Based on the Soil Environment Conservation Act standard, there was no environmental risk of the up-cycling of LFS. Results of mortar compressive strength assesment showed that the compressive strength of two blended cements using LFS of lower than 5 wt% was about 1.1 times superior to that of un-substituted cement (ordinary portland cement, OPC); however the compressive strength of those with LFS of 10 wt% decreased with 10% compared with that of OPC.

  • This study investigated arsenic speciation and risk assesment in 30 samples of hijiki purchased from local market in 10 Korean cities. The mean arsenic concentration of the hijiki samples was 45.65 mg/kg (dryness; moisture content of 91.1${\pm}$1.6%), and the major arsenic compound was arsenate [As(V)]. The concentrations of As(V) and As(III), as inorganic arsenic compounds, were detected to be 40.36 mg/kg and 0.37 mg/kg, respectively, and made up 88.6% (40.46 mg/kg) of the arsenic in the hijiki. Among the samples, the highest inorganic arsenic concentration was identified at 9.19 mg/kg (wet), and for an adult with a body weight of 60 kg was within an acceptable level as 0.7% (6.43 mg/60 kg/week) when compared with the provisional tolerable weekly intake (PTWI) (900 mg/60 kg/week), and would be considered safe with respect to health-hazardous effects.

  • When a structure is damaged, its dynamic responses (natural frequency, acceleration, strain) are found to be changed. The ANN(Artificial Neural Network) damage-assesment method is that some measured dynamic signals from the structural changing dynamic responses are applied to ANN to assess the structural damage. Although there have been some studies on a certain typical cases so far, it is rare to find studies about the characteristics of the ANN damage-assesment method or about its applicability, its strength and weakness. So this study researches on the characteristics of ANN damage assesment method and on a problem in application of the various dynamic responses to ANN. What the ANN damage assessment method usually does in past researches is to teach an ANN by using some response signals obtained from damaged structures under one kind of excitations and to identify the locations and the extents of damage of same structures under the same excitations. However, the excitations inflicted on the structures are not always the same. Thus this study experiments whether a ANN which is trained using the same excitations is able to identify the damage when different excitations inflict. All response signals are obtained from experimental models.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the status and gifted students' perception on curriculum implementation for gifted education at Busan Science Academy. For the purpose, we investigated the curriculum documents, the process of implementing curriculum and the result of the questionnaire. The questionnaire about the curriculum courses, teaching strategies and evaluation method was answered by 143 students at Busan Science Academy. The curriculum courses are composed of general courses and specialized courses: general courses comprise of Korean language, social studies, foreign languages, arts, and physical education. Specialized courses consist of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, earth science, information science. Elective courses are divided into basic elective courses and in-depth courses. Each in-depth course deals with more specialized content. The significant results of the questionnaire are as follows: First, according to gifted students' perception, the credits of specialized courses and in-depth elective courses need to be increased and the credits of general courses need to be reduced. Second, teachers at this school mainly use teaching strategies such as lecture, group activities and discussion, but the students prefer diverse teaching strategies such as lecture, discussion, experiment, individual research, problem solving and field studies. Third, students prefer a paper-and-pencil testing assesment rather than a written report assesment and lab experiment assesment. According to this study, the characteristics of the acceleration curriculum at Busan Science Academy were too intensive. Thus it is difficult to implement the enrichment education according to the demand of gifted students in this school. Therefore, this study suggests that we need to revise the curriculum courses of Busan Science Academy and develop contents and strategies for gifted education in science and mathematics.
