In the collaborative product design environment, the communication between designers is important to capture design intents and to share a common view among the different but semantically similar terms. The Semantic Web supports integrated and uniform access to information sources and services as well as intelligent applications by the explicit representation of the semantics buried in ontology. Ontologies provide a source of shared and precisely defined terms that can be used to describe web resources and improve their accessibility to automated processes. Therefore, employing ontologies on assembly modeling makes assembly knowledge accurate and machine interpretable. In this paper, we propose a framework of semantic assembly modeling using ontologies to share design information. An assembly modeling ontology plays as a formal, explicit specification of a shared conceptualization of assembly design modeling. In this paper, implicit assembly constraints are explicitly represented using OWL (Web Ontology Language) and SWRL (Semantic Web Rule Language). The assembly ontology also captures design rationale including joint intent and spatial relationships.

In the process of mechanical assembly design, assembly modeling systems have been used mainly for the design verification before manufacturing by enabling to check the interference and/ or the dynamic and kinematic performance. However, the conventional assembly modeling systems have a shortcoming that they can not be used in the initial design stage but can be used only after the design is fully completed. In other words conventional assembly modeling systems provide bottom-up modeling which means that the detailed modeling of components must precede the definition of relationships between them. To resolve this problem, an assembly modeling system is proposed to provide a top-down modeling environment in which components and assembly can be modeled simultaneously. To this end, an assembly data structure suitable for top-down assembly modeling has been established. Feature positioning Module(FPM) using geometric constraints has been also developed. The Sekective Solving Method proposed for FPM is based on the priority between the constraint equations and enables the designer's intent expressed by geometric constraints to be maintained throughout the whole modeling process. Finally, the feature based modeling technique using two-level features has been developed. Two-level features include an abstract model and a detailed model in a merged form in non-manifold data frame.

Demand for the use of 3D CAD DMU systems over the Internet environment has been increased. However, transmission of commercial 3D kernels has delayed the communication effectiveness due to the kernel size. Light weight CAD geometric kernel design methodology is required for rapid transmission in the distributed environment. In this paper, an assembly data structure suitable for the top-down and bottom-up assembly models has been constructed. Part features are stored without a hierarchy so that they are created and saved in no particular order. In particular, this paper proposes a new assembly representation model, called multi-level assembly representation (MAR), for the PDM based assembly DMU system. Since the geometric kernel retains assembly hierarchy and topological information, it is applied to the web-viewer for the PDM based DMU system. Effectiveness of the proposed geometric kernel is confirmed through various case studies.

This paper presents the drop performance test of the control rod assembly which is one of the main components strongly related to the safety of the prototype generation IV sodium-cooled fast reactor. To investigate the drop performance, a real-sized control rod assembly that was recently modified based on the drop analysis results was newly fabricated, and several free drop tests under different flow rate conditions were carried out. Then the results were compared with those obtained from the previous tests conducted on the conceptually designed control rod assembly to demonstrate the improvement in performance. Moreover, the drop performance tests under several types and magnitudes of seismic loadings were also conducted to investigate the effect of the seismic loading on the drop performance of the modified control rod assembly. The results showed that the effects of the type and magnitude of the seismic loading on the drop performance of the modified control rod assembly were not significant. Also, the drop time requirement was successfully satisfied, even under the seismic loading conditions.

A common task in assembly modeling is the determination of the position and orientation of a set of components by solving the spatial relationships between them. Assembly models could be constructed at various levels of abstraction. They could be classified into component or geometry-level assembly models. The geometry-level assembly design approach using mating constraints such as against and fits is widely used in the commercial modelers, but it may be very tedious in some cases fur designer. In this paper, we propose a new method to construct an assembly model at the component-level by extracting joint mating features from the kinematics constraints specified between components. The assembly model constructed using the proposed method includes hierarchical and relational assembly models, component/sub-assembly positions and degrees of freedom information. The proposed method is more intuitive and natural way of assembly design and it guarantees the topological robustness of assembly modification such as component replacement and modification.

A hydraulic hose is an important part of the hydraulic system which transmits power using pressurized fluids. It allows relative motion between components at each end of the hose assembly, and it is much easier to route a hose assembly than it is to bend and install a rigid tubing assembly. Unnecessary loads, which drop the hose's pressure capability and shorten service life, depend on a hose-routing. Therefore, the Hydraulic system designers must be aware to consider unnecessary load does not affect the here. For this consideration in an early stage of the design process, CAD system must support the hose assembly routing design function which is to generate routing path and design fitting angle properly. This paper proposes 2 methods. One is to generate curves that are similar to routing paths of the real hose assembly using the energy minimization method and the optimization method. The other is to design fitting angles that are important design elements of a hose assembly using the Parallel Transport Frame. To implement the proposed methods above, commercial CAD software, CATIA has been integrated with our program.

As many engineers and technicians are involved in the design process of large scale and/or complex products, there are a lot of miss matches and interferences due to designers' faults and several kinds of CAD systems. Recently, CAD systems are applied to verify and check the assembly process. Digital Mock-Up(DMU) system, a tool to build a virtual mock-up in the design stage, has been used to prevent the interferences and miss matches during precision design processes. Using the virtual assembly tool, engineers are able to design precision and interference free parts without physical mock-ups. Instead of a single CAD source, several CAD systems are used to design a complex product. Several organizations are involved in the distributed design environment for heterogeneous multi-CAD assembly. XML and the lightweight CAD file are proposed for the multi-CAD assembly. XML data contains hierarchy of the heterogenenous multi-CAD assembly. STEP PDM schema and STEP ISO 10303-28 formations are applied to construct the XML data. The lightweight CAD file produced from various CAD files through ACIS kernel and InterOp not only contains mesn, B-Rep and topological data, but also is used to visualize CAD data and to verify dimensions. Developed system is executed on the desktop computers. It does not require commercial CAD systems to visualize 3D assembly data. Real-time interference and fitness checks, dimensional verification, and design and assembly verification are performed on the developed system. Assembly of heterogeneous models for a car is conducted to verify the effectiveness of the developed DMU system on the Internet.

In engineering design environment it is hard to link design data and system because the types of them are disparate. Therefore, the importance of metadata has increased. Some researches have been executed to develop metadata. But they cannot interact with other metadata and are difficult to extend. The purpose of this paper is to develop a common metadata structure which represents the general information of mechanical part assembly using XML, and to use it as base documents in order to integrate design data and systems. It is composed of part and assembly documents. Part document represents the information of a part independently to part type. Assembly document represents the location of part documents which compose an assembly. Common documents can be used as a broker between design data and systems and improve interpretability and reusability of document. We applied the developed common document structure to 2-stage spur gear drive.
The assembly line is one of the typical process hard to analyze with mathematical methods including even stochastic approaches, because it includes many manual operations varying drastically depending on operators' skills. In this paper, we suggest the simulation optimization method to design the optimal assembly line of a gas oven. To achieve the optimal design, firstly, we modeled the real gas oven assembly line with actual data, such as assembly procedures, operation rules, and other input parameters and so on. Secondly, we build some alternatives to enhance the line performance based on business rules and other parameters. The DOE(Design Of Experiment) techniques were used for testing alternatives under various situations. Each alternatives performed optimization process with evolution strategy; one of the GA(Genetic Algorithm) techniques. As a result, we can make about 7% of throughputs up with the same time and cost. By this process, we expect the assembly line can obtain the solution compatible with their own problems.
Using data from the design earthquake of the Korean standard nuclear power plant, seismic analyses of a fuel assembly are conducted in this study. The modal characteristics are used to develop an input deck for the seismic analysis. With a time history analysis, the responses of the fuel assembly in the event of an earthquake are obtained. In particular, the displacement, velocity, and acceleration responses at the center location of the fuel assembly are obtained in the time domain, with these outcomes then used for a detailed structural analysis of the fuel rods in the ensuing analyses. The response spectra are also generated to determine the response characteristics in the frequency domain. The structural integrity of the fuel assembly can be ensured through this type of time history analysis considering the input excitations of various earthquakes considered in the design.
