  • High-rise building construction has been increasing for the recent years and the construction process has become more complicated. This suggests a need for precise planning based on reliable data to prevent cost overruns and delays. However, the process planning is implemented based mainly on the experience of engineers that can result in critical damage in cost and time. Accurate productivity estimation and unit cost analysis must be considered important matter to prevent such disaster. This study estimates productivity and unit cost of curtain wall operations in high-rise building construction by simulation techniques and statistical methodologies. This study suggests a decision making methodology for the site personnel that enables to compare various combinations of productivity and unit cost based on reliable data that has been collected in actual construction sites. It is expected that this study contributes to the following research of developing an optimized construction performance assembling model for the site personnel.

  • Shrink fitting which is assembling process to fix stator core on the motor frame is widely used at the mass production line of motors because of cost and productivity. This process produces compressive stress on a stator core, which causes negative effect for example, core and copper losses on motor performance. Magnetic properties of electrical steel are effected by both compressive and tensile and thermal stresses. Electromagnetic field analysis is considered one of the effective process since one can predict motor performance including core loss precisely. This method can consider non linear magnetic property with magnetic saturation which is typical electrical steel behavior. However this method is strongly depended on non linear magnetic data, one may have different calculation result whether considering mechanical stress or not. This study describes magnetic field analysis of a motor considering mechanical stress from shrink fitting. Analysis results are compared with each stress-free and stressed condition.

  • The STW(servo track writing) system which is the process of writing servo signals on disks before assembling in drives uses the spindle motor-chuck mechanism to realize low cost because the spindle motor-chuck mechanism has merit which can simultaneously write multi-disk by piling up disks in hub. Therefore, when the spindle motor-chuck mechanism of horizontal type operates in high rotation speed it is necessary to reduce the effect of RRO(repeatable run-out) and NRRO(non-repeatable run-out) to achieve the high precision accuracy of nano-meter level during the STW process. In this paper, we analyzed that the slip in assembly surfaces can be caused by the mechanical tolerance and clamping force in hub-chuck mechanism and can affect NRRO performance. We designed springs for centering and clamping considering centrifugal force by the rotation speed and assembly condition. The experimental result showed NRRO performance improves about 30 % than case of weak clamping force. The result shows that the optimal design of the spindle motor-chuck mechanism can effectively reduce the effect of NRRO and RRO in STW process.

  • The recent paradigm shift in the construction industry has led to a growing demand for industrial construction. In particular, interest in modular housing, one of the areas of industrialization architecture, is soaring. Modular housing is a construction method for completing a building by transporting factory-built modules to the site and assembling them. However, modular housing in Korea has various problems such as errors in design books, lack of factory drawings, and lack of on-site construction plans. BIM is a tool for accumulating, producing and managing various information through 3D models and is a solution to solve various problems of modular housing. In this study, problems of modular housing and BIM utilization of modular housing were presented as ways to ensure the quality of modular housing. Therefore, this study analyzed the problems that are occurring in the construction process of modular housing. And, to address the problem of modular housing, BIM utilization measures were proposed for each modular process step. However, the application of BIM in domestic modular project is currently being carried out in pilot research project. Because of this, the BIM utilize method for modular housing is limited based on the BIM use for general projects and the examples for some modular pilot projects.

  • Small form factor optical pickup (SFFOP) corresponding to BD specifications is strongly proposed for the next-generation portable storage device. In order to generate SFFOP, small sized optical pickup has been fabricated. We have developed a small sited optical pickup that is called the integrated optical pickup (IOP). The fabrication method of this system is mainly dependant on the use of the wafer based micro fabrication technology, which has been used in MEMS process such as photolithography, reactive ion etching, wafer bonding, and packaging process. This approach has the merits for mass production and high assembling accuracy. In this study, to generate the small sized optical pickup for high recording capacity, IOP corresponding to BD specifications has been designed and developed, including three main parts, 1) design, fabrication and evaluation of objective lens unit, 2) design and fabrication of IOP and 3) evaluation process of FES and TES.

  • In this study, we improved problems in the existing product by PARKER and developed the swivel valve tube couplers that can be produced by a low price in Korea. The major development was that a modulized production method was implemented by introducing a part assembling method that uses a cocking jig, and the production cost was reduced by operating the production process more simply than that of PARKER. Also, it was possible to avoid the patient registered by PARKER through the differences in the number of grooving processes and the type of o-ring. In the results of the rotation test by varying its application angle after installing it to a vehicle, it was verified that the structure proposed in this study can endure the eccentric torque and transformation pressure for various angles that have been considered as the problem in the existing fixed tube couplers. In addition, the structure was developed to adopt the problem that represents differences in the installation position of an air tank or the length and direction of hoses according to the type of vehicles produced in vehicle manufacturers. Furthermore, it was possible to verify that the product developed in this study was more excellent than that of PARKER through comparing the performance according to the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard.

  • The domestic airline industry undertakes the production of finished products by assembling existing self-described components via a design process which involves assembly and production steps, after which many of the finished products are exported. However, high reliability and stability must be guaranteed, because customers require high-precision components at the time of manufacturing. In the aircraft parts industry, the mass production of high-value-added parts is limited. Therefore, a small production scale depending on the part is used, as many types of conventional CNC lathe machines with X-axis and Z-axis as well as Z-axis and C-axis CNC milling are used. The parts also rely on high-pressure air to increase production. The most important factors are good stability during processing, as high-precision parts are required, as noted above. It was found that as the C-axis rotation speed increased, the diameter of the cutting tool decreased with a decrease in the surface roughness, while the workpiece rotation speed increased with an increase in the surface roughness.

  • The aviation industry has grown beyond the simple processing and assembling of aircraft parts and now designs and exports finished aircraft. In this study, the vertical CNC milling rotational speed and feed rate were parameters to investigate the life of tools according to their shape: (flat, round, and ball end mill) in the rough cutting of titanium. These tools are widely used in aircraft manufacturing and assembly. The purpose of this study is to measure the cutting temperature generated during the cutting process and calculate the rate of tool wear. This will be accomplished by measuring the tool weight before and after cutting the specimen and to compare it with the results of previous studies. Our study showed that the maximum cutting temperature increased as cutting time, tool rotational speed, and feed rate increased. The highest cutting temperatures were recorded for the ball, round, and flat end mill, respectively. Tool wear for the ball, round, and flat end mill increased as the speed and feed rate increased. The flat end mill exhibited the highest rate of wear from a minimum of 0.62% to a maximum of 2.88%.

  • Molecular assembling is one of the current interests in the field of bottom-up nanotechnology. Self-assembled monolayers of sulfur-containing molecules or supramolecular assemblies via surface sol-gel processes formed on conductive supports are chemically robust and can be easily fabricated without sophisticated instruments. We have fabricated various types of molecular assemblies consisting of donor-acceptor pairs on the surfaces of gold and indium-tin-oxide electrodes. Build-up of three-dimensional multi structures consisting of thiol dyes and gold nanoparticles also has been successful. These assemblies showed clear photocurrent responses in photoelectro-chemical cells. In this article, we will describe recent progress on photoelectric conversion using molecular assemblies especially focused on our research results.
