  • We have developed a compact and cost-effective camera module on the basis of wafer-scale-replica processing. A multiple-layered structure of several aspheric lenses in a mobile-phone camera module is first assembled by bonding multiple glass-wafers on which 2-dimensional replica arrays of identical aspheric lenses are UV-embossed, followed by dicing the stacked wafers and packaging them with image sensor chips. This wafer-scale processing leads to at least 95% yield in mass-production, and potentially to a very slim phone with camera-module less than 2 mm in thickness. We have demonstrated a VGA camera module fabricated by the wafer-scale-replica processing with various UV-curable polymers having refractive indices between 1.4 and 1.6, and with three different glass-wafers of which both surfaces are embossed as aspheric lenses having $230{\mu}m$ sag-height and aspheric-coefficients of lens polynomials up to tenth-order. We have found that precise compensation in material shrinkage of the polymer materials is one of the most technical challenges, in orderto achieve a higher resolution in wafer-scaled lenses for mobile-phone camera modules.

  • Efforts to obtain more efficient coupling of light from a laser diode to a single mode fiber have continued for various applications such as links for optical fiber communication systems. In TO-can package, configuration of optimized aspherical lens is bi-aspheric and its diameter is 2.4mm. We designed and fabricated aspherical coupling lens by means of glass molding technique under consideration of glass shrinkage. By controlling the aspherical profile error and surface roughness which were below 90nm and 10nm, respectively, we obtained the low coupling loss, 5.40dB, which was able to use for coupling a single mode fiber to laser diode.

  • Recently aspheric lenses are widely used for superpricision optical instruments, such as cellular phone camera modules, digital cameras and optical communication modules. The aspherical lenses are processed using mold core under high temperature compressive forming pressure. It is imperative to develop superhard protective films for the life extension of lens forming mold core. Especially ta-C films with higher $sp^3$ fractions receive attentions for the life extension of lens forming mold and, in turn, the cost reduction of lenses due to their suprior high temperature stability, high hardness and smooth surfaces. In this study ta-C films were processed on WC mold as a function of substrate bias voltage using FVA (Filtered Vacuum Arc) method. The processed films were characterized by Raman spectroscopy and nano-indentation to investigate bonding nature and hardness, respectively. The film with maximun 87% of $sp^3$ fraction was obtained at the substrate bias voltage of -60 V, which was closest to ta-C film. ta-C films showed better high temperature stability by sustaining relatively high fraction of $sp^3$ bonding even after 2,000 glass lens forming applications.

  • Recently, aspheric glass lens molding core is fabricated with tungsten carbide(WC). If molding core is fabricated with silicon carbide(SiC), SiC coating process, which must be carried out before the Diamond-Like Carbon(DLC) coating can be eliminated and thus, manufacturing time and cost can be reduced. Diamond Like Carbon(DLC) is being researched in various fields because of its high hardness, high elasticity, high durability, and chemical stability and is used extensively in several industrial fields. Especially, the DLC coating of the molding core surface used in the fabrication of a glass lens is an important technical field, which affects the improvement of the demolding performance between the lens and molding core during the molding process and the molding core lifetime. Because SiC is a material of high hardness and high brittleness, it can crack or chip during grinding. It is, however, widely used in many fields because of its superior mechanical properties. In this paper, the grinding condition for silicon carbide(SiC) was developed under the grinding condition of tungsten carbide. A silicon carbide molding core was fabricated under this grinding condition. The measurement results of the SiC molding core were as follows: PV of 0.155 ${\mu}m$(apheric surface) and 0.094 ${\mu}m$(plane surface), Ra of 5.3 nm(aspheric surface) and 5.5 nm(plane surface).

  • Eye Glass Display (EGD) with microdisplay to realize the virtual display can make the large screen, so virtual image has been developed by using microdisplay panel. This paper shows study of spherical prism lens design and manufacture of a small size and light weigh EGD with 0.59" OLED panel. Code V is used and it designed an aspherical prism lens about eye relief 25mm and 42 degree of filed of view (FOV). With the application this aspheric prism lens to OLED type's microdisplay, virtual image showed 60 inch at 2m. It had less than 2% of distortion value and modulation transfer function in axial had 30% of resolution with 32 lp/mm spatial frequency. We made an injection molding bases to lens designed.
