  • This study is to illuminate the problem of shadows and evil appearing in contemporary events in the midst of a period of upheaval through Inferno of Divine Comedy. First, the concept of shadow and evil were briefly summarized in analytical psychology and discussed the importance of considering the concepts with the empirical aspect of relativity and ethics in the field of psychotherapy. The 14th century, the age of Dante, was the embryonic period of the Renaissance beyond the end of the Middle Ages. It was when Dante, who was writing Divine Comedy, had to take off his persona forcibly and live in exile. In a nutshell, it was a transition period for both the individual and the collective. The dark forest is a nigredo, darkness and chaos we face in this transition, but it can be a place of transformation and rebirth. The three beasts (leopard, lion, and she-wolf) encountered in the forest can be considered as the instinctual images that Dante ignored and alienated, which the medieval Christian world had suppressed and eliminated. Especially at the collective level, as destructive instincts, ferocious beasts roam throughout society when a crisis breaks dominant laws of values. The three beasts of Inferno appear as phenomena of shadows and evil. The aspect of leopard was explored Cerberus and Chiaco(pig) as a symbol of greed, and the lion, Farinata as the form of violent passion. The aspect of the she-wolf was examined as Geryon, a deceitful monster with a beast nature hidden behind goodness, the giants in the frozen lake of Cocytus, and Branca D'Oria, who betrayed and murdered the country and family. Inferno reveals the "state" of being trapped when one yields to the evil hidden within oneself and falls into prey.

  • The behavior of a three-dimensional pure rectangular water jet with aspect ratio of 10 was experimentally investigated based on the results of the mean velocity field obtained by PIV. The saddle back distribution was observed in the lateral distribution along the major axis. The theoretical centerline velocity equation derived from the point source concept using the spreading rate for the axisymmetric jet was in good agreement with the measured centerline velocity and gave the division of the potential core region, two-dimensional region, and axisymmetric region. The range of the two-dimensional region divided by the criterion of the theoretical centerline velocity decay for the aspect ratio of 10 was observed to be smaller than that of the transition region. The applicability of the two-dimensional model to the behavior of the rectangular jet with low aspect ratio or the wastewater discharged from a multiport diffuser in the deep water of real ocean may result in significant error in the transition and axisymmetric regions after the two-dimensional region. In the two-dimensional region, the Gaussian constant tended to be conserved, and the spreading rate slightly decreased at the end of the two-dimensional region. The normalized turbulent intensity along the centerline of the jet initially abruptly increased and showed relatively higher intensity for higher Reynolds number.

  • Aerodynamic analysis for the airfoil, KARI-11-180 having 18% thickness ratio, was performed with CFD techniques. The boundary layer grid was generated by projecting the wall grid normally and fine grid was placed behind the trailing edge to capture the wake accurately. The distance to the far boundary is 100 chords and the flow condition is same as the wind tunnel test condition. Transition SST and DES turbulence models were utilized for accurate prediction of the transiton point. The predicted lift is higher but the drag is predicted lower than the wind tunnel test. 3-dimensional results with airfoil models of which aspect ratio were 2 and 5 were compared with 2-dimensional results.

  • The laminar natural convection of air in 2-D rectangular enclosure in which two opposing isothermal walls were kept at different temperatures is investigated numerically for Rayleigh number up to $10^6$. Computations were performed for the width-to-height ratios of 1, 2, and 4, and for the inclination angle range of $0^{\circ}{\leq}{\theta}{\leq}90^{\circ}$. For each aspect ratio, the influence of the inclination angle on the flow patterns and heat transfer rates were examined for $10^3{\leq}Ra{\leq}10^6$. It is found that the growth of secondary flow in the corners led to the decrease in overall heat transfer for small aspect ratio case, and the transition from a three-cell structure to a unicell flow pattern in large aspect ratio led to a step-like change in heat transfer. A new correlation of mean Nusselt number is presented for the vertical case of ${\theta}=90^{\circ}$.

  • Electroconvective instability is a non-linear transport phenomenon which can be found in ion-selective transport system such as electrodialysis, Galvanic cell and electrolytic cell. The instability is triggered by the fluctuation of space charge layer in adjacent of ion-selective surface, leading to increase of mass transport rate. Thus, in the aspect of mass transport, the instability has an important meaning. Although recent experimental techniques have opened up an avenue to direct visualize the instability, fundamental investigations have been conducted in limited area due to several experimental limitations. In this work, the electroconvective instability under potentiostatic mode was solved by numerical method in order to demonstrate correlation between current-time curve and the instability behavior. By rigorous time-resolved analysis, the transition behaviors can be divided into three stages; formation of space charge layer - growth of electroconvective instability - steady state. Furthermore, scaling laws of transition time were numerically obtained according to applied voltage as well.

  • The transition temperature of respiratory activity of mitochondria isolated from panicles of rice plant was measured with 41 varieties bred in Korea, which had been agronomically classified into five groups based on their relative cold-tolerance; S (strong cold-tolerance), S-M (moderate to strong cold-tolerance), M (moderate cold-tolerance), M-W (moderate to weak cold-tolerance) and W (weak cold-tolerance). The temperature was found to be $11.5{\sim}13.5^{\circ}C$ for group S, $13.5{\sim}16^{\circ}C$ for group S-M, $16{\sim}17^{\circ}C$ for group M, $17{\sim}18^{\circ}C$ for group M-W, and ${\geq}18^{\circ}C$ for group W respectively with a few exceptions of minor deviation, demonstrating a close correlation between the transition temperature and the chilling susceptivity of a variety. This observation supports the suggestion that the transition temperature of respiratory activity of panicles be adopted as a reliable index for grading a rice variety as to its overall cold tolerance. Also studied is on the methodology for measurement of the transition temperature in the aspect of analytical biochemistry. In addition to the usual polarographic method, a spectrophotometric method which is based on the enzymatic assay of membrane-bound cytochrome C oxidase was examined. This enzyme was found previousely and confirmed again in the present work to be a key factor governing the respiratory trantion at least in plant mitochondria. The optical method was turned out to be very successful, although it was a little more complicate and time-consuming than the electrochemical method.

  • Focusing on the hermeneutic instability of a key word of Paradise Lost, "wander," this study attempts to situate John Milton's early modern epic in the longue $dur{\acute{e}}e$ historical transition from seignorial to capitalist mode of production, especially the displacement and reorganization of producer population, a corollary of early phase of modernization. The historic experience of vagrancy and its normalization, and the concomitant shift of the primary human sociability from given to voluntary bonds, I suggest, shape and inform Milton's early modern rewriting of the Biblical story of the fall and his revising of the heroic epic romance into a plebeian romance of a wandering, companionate couple. While building on the critical consensus on this poem's deliberate distancing from the tradition of classical epic and chivalric romance, this essay argues that Milton re-appropriates and re-channels the aspirational aspect of chivalric wandering, or mobility, for his plebeian heroes, a companionate conjugal couple. The hermeneutic instability of the word wander, this essay suggests, captures the duality of the historic experience of vagrancy, both the tragic experience of displacement and the liberational and uplifting dimension of that experience.

  • The synthesis and regioselective reactions of a chiral allyl sulfide. (S)-(+)-(1-methylpyrrolidin-2-yl)methyl allyl sulfide (MAS, 1) are described. Remarkable ${\alpha}-regioselectivity$ was observed in the alkylation of the carbanion of MAS while 1:3 mixtures of ${\alpha}-and\;{\gamma}-adducts$ were produced in the addition of the MAS anion to aldehydes. However, a dramatic change of the regioselectivity was witnessed when Lewis acids such as $Et_3Al$, $Et_3B$, and $Ti(O^iPr)_4$ were used as additives in the addition reaction. In these cases, ${\alpha}-adducts$ were formed exclusively. A rationale for the change of regioselectivity is provided. And the stereochemical aspect of the addition reaction is also described.

  • Metastasis is the main culprit of the great majority of cancerrelated deaths. However, the complicated process of the invasion-metastasis cascade remains the least understood aspect of cancer biology. Telomerase plays a pivotal role in bypassing cellular senescence and sustaining the cancer progression by maintaining telomere homeostasis and genomic integrity. Telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) exerts a series of fundamental functions that are independent of its enzymatic cellular activity, including proliferation, inflammation, epithelia-mesenchymal transition (EMT), angiogenesis, DNA repair, and gene expression. Accumulating evidence indicates that TERT may facilitate most steps of the invasion-metastasis cascade. In this review, we summarize important advances that have revealed some of the mechanisms by which TERT facilitates tumor metastasis, providing an update on the non-canonical functions of telomerase beyond telomere maintaining.

  • The retail industry of Korea has, owing to the increase of purchasing power of her people and the changing pattern of consumption appetite, marked a considerable development. Nevertheless the retail industry of Korea is still in primitive stage with its smallness of size, density of stores and inefficiency of management compared to those in the developed countries. It is a high time for Korean distribution market to boost its competitive power in the wake of the opening of distribution industry since January of 1996. Accordingly, it should be the goal of these markets to maximize its positive aspects while trying their best to minimize the negative aspect in this transition time for globalization.
