A Study on the Patchwork in the Costumes of the Arctic Regions

  • The most distinctive feature of the costumes of the Arctic regions from Alaska to Siberia centering around the Bering Sea connecting Asia to North America, is that each tribe makes clothes adequate to the climate and their lifestyles with animal hides obtained from hunting in their habitation. Furs or fish skins, the main materials for clothing, are characteristically cut into many pieces, and thus piece-joining patchwork is used to make or decorate garments. Patchwork is the technique that can create new designs with 3-dimensional and various combinations by modifying the simple materials, and also has the advantage of fitting the body without a certain cut line. Therefore, the patchwork found in the Arctic costumes may be developed from folk costume designs with limited materials like fur into new ones for modern or future costumes.

First Record of Ulva pertusa Kjellman (Ulvales, Chlorophyta) in the Pacific Coast of Mexico

  • Based on samplings during 2006-2007 on the intertidal zone of Playa Tampico, Eréndira and Punta Baja, Baja California, Ulva pertusa Kjellman (Ulvales, Chlorophyta) was recorded for the first time for the Pacific coast of Mexico. An alga native to Asia, U. pertusa has just recently been recorded in the southern coast of California (USA). The identification of U. pertusa was based on the observation of the morphology and reproductive characters of the collected specimens. Furthermore, the species identity was confirmed by molecular comparison between nuclearencoded ITS2 sequences of the Mexican samples and those of other Ulva species in GenBnak data. Habitat and distribution of U. pertusa along the Pacific coast of North America are also described. Considering our new report of its occurrence in Mexico, we conclude that U. pertusa is expanding its geographical distribution by trans-ocean introductions.

  • 가구부재로 사용하기 위해 요구되는 목재 성질들을 변수로 하는 판별분석법을 이용하여 국산 활엽수재들이 현재 국내에서 수입 사용되는 온대산 활엽수재와 열대산 활엽수 집단중 어느 집단과 유사한지를 조사하였다. 조사된 36종의 국산 활엽수종 15종은 온대산 활엽수와 나머지 21 종은 열대산 활엽수와 성질이 비슷한 것으로 나타났다.

상하이 양산항과 신항(Busan New Port)의 경쟁력 비교분석 (Comparative Analysis on the Competitiveness between Busan New Port and Shanghai's New Yangshan Port)

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze the competitiveness between Busan New Port and Shanghai's New Yangshan Port, on an island 20 miles off the Chinese mainland coast. For this aim, the paper examines backgrounds of Yangshan Port construction and its related projects, namely, Donghai Bridge and Luchao Logistics Park including operation strategies of Yangshan New Deepwater Port. The main results of this paper are as follows: Busan New Port has competitive advantage over Yangshan Port in terms of ideal location, especially in Asia-North America route, and connection between terminal and hinterland logistics park. Because Busan New Port is operated by fully on-dock system. Nevertheless, Yangshan Port has more strength in its centrality, port tariff and port productivity, which are represented by crane productivity, quay productivity and area productivity. Therefore, Korean ports are recommended by transformation from cargo attraction-type to cargo generation-type port through early activation of port logistics center along with Free Economic Zone.

  • Since Universal Design emerged as a new design paradigm for future, the strategies of implementing UD in educational setting has been continuously pursued. Many university programs in North America especially explored the possibility and shared their experiences in the international conferences. In asia, however, no attempt was tried. This presentation will share the navigation teaching modules used in a undergraduate course “Interior Environment and Human Behavior” class, its methodology of experience and data analysis, and finally educational outcome. Since UD is a basic human oriented design, the modules surely provided affluent and realistic opportunity for students to feel emotional sympathy to understand a diverse range of users and to facilitate creative design solution for them.

철침목의 형상에 따른 특성 (Characteristics of Steel Sleeper with the Shape)

  • Steel sleepers have largely two types, n and Y types, depending on their shapes and are used mostly in Europe since 1980. The sleepers are made of steel of high strength and toughness, and thus recycling is completely possible up to $100\%$. Since the weight is almost one quarter and the less of that of concrete sleeper, the cost for delivery is saved. In addition, high economical efficiency is expected from the extended maintenance intervals. The n type is used in Europe, Australia, mideast Asia and north America whereas the Y type in Germany. Steel sleeper with high functionality is domestically developed through the comparison of characteristics with the shapes.

Physicochemical Properties and Consumer Acceptance of Tofu Incorporated with Yakong

  • Tofu has been playing an important role in people's daily diet in most of Asia and recently in North America due to several health-promoting functions, preventing and treating a number of chronic diseases such as cancer, coronary heart disease and osteoporosis. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of different levels of yakong incorporation (0, 5, 10, and 15%, w/w) in preparation of firm tofu. Quality parameters such as pH, titratable, moisture content, color, and consumer preference were determined, and their correlations were analysed. There were no significant differences in pH, titratable acidity, and moisture content due to different levels of yakong incorporation studied (p>0.05). A significant decrease in L$^{*}$ and b$^{*}$-values whereas significant increase in a$^{*}$-value was observed (p<0.05). Five percent yakong tofu received the most favorable mean scores with respect to color, texture, and overall acceptability. Correlation analysis revealed that yakong incorporation was well correlated with some of physicochemical properties as well as consumer preference.

해외 우정기관의 친환경 차량 운영 동향 (Trends on Alternative Fuel Vehicles in World-Wide 10 Postal Agencies)

  • In this study, we provide trends on alternative fuel vehicles promoted by postal agencies in 10 countries in North America, the EU, and Asia. It describes the specifications of most EV vehicles in operation, plans, and strategies to replace existing internal combustion engines with new vehicles in the future and provides the current status of alternative vehicle charging networks in each postal agency. This paper will help postal agencies, logistics companies, automobile companies, motorcycle companies, and even individuals who want to use vehicles with alternative fuels, such as electric vehicles, on strategies to establish and implement before introducing and operating the vehicles.

New Report of Vicia grandiflora Scop. in Korea

  • We have discovered Vicia grandiflora Scop., a newly invasive alien species in Baekun-ri, Okcheon-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do, Korea. This species is native to regions from Central and Southeast Europe to Central Asia and Iran and is reported as an invasive species in North America and Japan. This species is similar to the Vicia sativa complex (V. sativa subsp. sativa, V. sativa subsp. nigra) but can be readily distinguished by the undivided ovate to semi-hastate stipules of the upper leaves, yellowish petals, large size of its flower, and elongated hilum. In the field, V. grandiflora grows in disturbed sites near cultivated land, suggesting that their seeds are typically transported by vehicles along with fertilizer or livestock feed. Here, we present the morphological description, photographs, and sites of V. grandiflora growth, which will be useful in guiding the management of this invasive alien plant.

  • Subsocial woodroaches of Cryptocercus occur in high mountainous forests in temperate regions and they live in a family in complicated galleries of rotten logs. A prominent feature of the geographical distribution of Cryptocercus is the wide disjunction between the eastern and western species in North America, and between West China and Northeast Asia. Recently, five species of the genus were added from Asian areas and two of them are distributed in Northeast Asian areas. We examined morpho-anatomical structures of male genitalia in Manchurian and Korean Cryptocercus, focusing on male genital hooks and subgenital plates.
