  • This study on the incineration ash and sintering pellet from sewage sludge was carried out to evaluate the possibility of recycling in sewage sludge disposal. The samples used in this experiment were raw sewage sludge, its incineration ash, and sintering pellet. The characteristics of the three sample types were identified using X-ray diffraction(XRD), X-ray fluorescence(XRF), atomic absorption spectroscopy(AAS), and inductively coupled plasma spectroscopy(ICP). The chemical compositions of all three sample types were similar in their clay component, however, the sewage sludge had a high content of organic materials. From an analysis of the mineral content of the three sample types, the conversion of their compositions was found to be relative to temperature. Accordingly, incineration ash and sintering pellet both have potential for use as a functional construction material.

  • The purpose of this study was to research on compressibility characteristics of waste tire powder-added lightweight soil(TLS) for recycling dredged soil, bottom ash and waste tire. The TLS used in this experiment consists of dredged soil, cement, waste tire powder and bottom ash. Test specimens were prepared with various content of waste tire powder ranged from 0% to 100% at 25% intervals by the dried weight of dredged soil. Several series of one-dimensional consolidation tests were carried out. Based on the experimental results, as the waste tire powder increased, the swelling index of TLS increased. The compression index and swelling index of the TLS with bottom ash content showed lower value than without bottom ash. Then, compressibility characteristics of TLS were strongly influenced by mixing conditions of waste tire powder content and bottom ash content.

  • In this study, we carried out the research for the recycling potential of the dyeing wastewater treatment sludges as construction materials. The incineration ash of sludges were solidified as interlocking block in condition of sludge/cement ratio 2.5%, 5.0% and 10%, respectively. Those interlocking blocks were cured for 3days, 7days and 28days in ambient air condition, respectively. The results of this research were summarized as follows: The dyeing wastewater treatment sludges was below the Korea Leaching Limit. After incineration, the ash was manufactured as interlocking block. Bendable strength over 50kg$_{f}$/$\textrm{cm}^2$ suitable for interlocking block was obtained only when the sample was cured for 7days at sludge/cement ratio 2.5% and 5.0%. Hygroscopic ratio of interlocking block was above the Korea Industry Standard. We think that recycling of the incineration ash from dyeing wastewater treatment sludges to interlocking block will have high potential possibility.y.

  • Research on FA(Fly ash) is actively carried out, while the research on BA(Bottom ash) is not so, and research on BA recycling field is urgently required. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the lightweight and thermal insulation characteristics of BA mortar by comparing BA mortar made with porous dry BA(air-cooled) and general mortar. To investigate the lightweight of BA, density test, unit volume mass test and SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope) test were performed. BA mortar and general mortar molds were prepared for the thermal insulation test at room temperature and humidity environment determined by KS A 0006 and they were dried at the temperature of $105{\pm}2^{\circ}C$ until the weight became constant. As a result of the lightweight test, the lightweight of BA mortar is about 30% lighter than the general mortar. Therefore, BA is expected to contribute to reduce the building load when used as building material. As a result of thermal insulation test, the thermal conductivity of BA mortar is about 30% better than that of general mortar.

  • Globally, there has been a lot of research related to recycling coal ash from power plant stations. This research is happening because there is a considerable shortage of sites for reclamation of increased coal ash every year. In addition, a variety of environmental pollutants have appeared because of mining activity. Abandoned coal mine, pits, and mine tailing piles caused pollutants to come to the surface resulting in serious damage for humans and the environment. Therefore in this study, we investigated whether or not coal ashes have the ability to prevent several environmental problems by mining in Korea and a manageable form recycling coal ashes. In overseas countries, there is a sufficient field of applicable cases where coal ash is used for neutralizing AMD (Acid Mine Drainage), covering of the waste materials, grouting, and soil amendments. However in Korea, since the coal ash is classified as a 'waste', there is an insufficient field applicable cases so far. Therefore it is necessary to establish a specific standard and management system for the utilization of coal ash based on the relevant precedent cases applied abroad in order to prevent environmental pollution caused by mining activity in Korea.

  • Paper industry in Korea produces 14 million tons of paper and 1.3 million tons of sludge per year. Most of them has been treated by incineration, landfilling or ocean dumping. The sludge recycling to minimize the impact on the environment, so its importance is highlighted. In this study, in order to develop a new way of recycling the sludge, it was calcined and the recycled ash was tried to use as papermaking filler. Concerning the yield of calcium carbonate and the brightness and the rheology of the recycled calcination sludge, the optimum calcination conditions were found to be $600^{\circ}C$ and 12 hours. The sludge ash itself was not suitable for papermaking due to its color and low brightness. Thus the ash from the sludge was first mixed with a commercial filler and then utilized for papermaking. The effect of the increased hardness after high temperature treatment on wire abrasion was confirmed.

  • Generally, when using copper slag mixed into the concrete, due to higher weight of copper slag, a reduction in the compressive strength and durability of the hardened concrete to increased bleeding is caused. In this study, hence copper slag, a kind of by-product was used as an alternative to the fine aggregate, it was carried out in combination with the use of fly ash in eliminating disadvantage and recycling aspects. As a result of this study, the mixing of fly ash is decreased in the 50% of bleeding, 5% of drying shrinkage, 30% of carbonation test and improvement of 10% of compressive strength than that of copper slag only at most.

  • This paper investigates the mechanical characteristics of monofilament-reinforced bottom ash mixtures for recycling dredged soil. Reinforced bottom ash mixture is a lightweight soil added with monofilament in order to increase its shear strength. Test specimens were fabricated by various mixing conditions including monofilament content, its length and its diameter. Then several series of unconfined compression tests and direct shear tests were performed to investigate mechanical characteristics of reinforced lightweight soil. The experimental results indicated that stress-strain behaviors of reinforced lightweight soil were strongly influenced by mixing conditions of monofilament content, its length and diameter. The compressive strength of reinforced lightweight soil generally increased by adding monofilament. In this test, the maximum increase in compressive strength was obtained at 0.5% content and 4cm length of monofilament. These results were similar to those of direct shear tests. The unconfined compressive strength of reinforced lightweight soil with monofilament of 0.25mm in diameter was greater than that of reinforced lightweight soil with monofilament of 0.5mm in diameter.

  • This study was to develop the triboelectrostatic separation technique to recycle the coal from about 20% of mill reject products remained by grinding process in the coal thermoelectric power plant. In this study, we get a test results that can product the cleaned coal of 15% ash content and 66.23% recovery from mill reject of 47% ash content. And then, from the result of the releases analysis, we proved the excellence of treatment method, after showing the treament processing which is able to get 80% of recovery of coal from 20% of ash content demanded in the power plant.
