  • A rapid and selective copper-catalyzed amination of aryl halides with sodium azide was established by using 10 mol % of CuI, and 20 mol % of N,N'-dimethylethylenediamine in DMSO under microwave irradiation for 10 min. The catalytic system with 4-substituted aryl iodides was found to be the most effective leading to a nearly complete conversion.

  • Various hydrazines such as aryl-, carbonyl-, and sulfonyl-hydrazine were reacted with dinitrogen tetroxide to give the corresponding azides in excellent yields under mild ocnditions at low temperature $(-20-40^\circ{C)}$ in acetonitrile. The reaction appears to be initiated by formation of the .betha.-nitroso hydrazine intermediate which converts into the azide product.

  • Various 5-substituted 1H-tetrazole derivatives were synthesized in a simple and environmentally benign method from the reaction of aryl and benzyl nitriles with sodium azide in solvent-free media using montmorillonite K-10 clay as solid recyclable heterogeneous acidic catalyst and microwave irradiation in good yields and short reaction times.
