A quasi-two-dimensional unsteady flow model was developed for simulating the flow in a river system including artificial storage pockets with side weirs. It is a multiply-connected network which combines channels and storage pockets. The channel flow is described by the one-dimensional Saint Venant equations, and the weir overflow flow by the cell continuity and stage-discharge relations. The model was applied to the Imjin river system including six artificial storage pockets. Design flood peak reduction due to storage pockets is not sensitive to the side weir discharge coefficient. Storage pockets downstream are less effective than upstream ones in reducing peak stage as the backwater effect becomes more dominant. Simulated flood control effect is highly sensitive to the roughness coefficient. The uncertainty due to the roughness coefficient increases as the weir crest elevation gets higher. Because the best design alternative varies with the roughness coefficient, proper estimation of it is essential to the design of side weirs. Moreover, uncertainty of the estimation needs to be considered in the design process.
The water-storage performance of an intake weir can be evaluated by stage-discharge ratings. The stage-discharge rating of a gabion weir depends on the physical characteristics of the filling materials. This study reviewed existing discharge formulae for the evaluation of the water-storage performance of gabion weirs. A previously published relationship between the characteristics of filling materials and experimental constants was adapted for stage-discharge rating. The mean size of the filling material is the most influential factor for the water intake and water-storage performance of gabion weirs.
FLDWAV model was modified such that it can adequately simulate the effect of Jamsil and Singok submerged weirs in the main reach of the Han River. The enhanced model combines weir-type discharge equations for overflow at fixed weir and Manning equation for fluvial-type flow at the movable weir. Equations for weir overflow include those for submerged weir flow and free overflow. Gates of the movable weir may be open or closed for the simulation. In order to test the simulation capabilities, the enhanced model was applied for various flow conditions at submerged weirs. Backwater effect due to Jamsil and Singok submerged weirs were well simulated. Simulations were carried out for spring and neap tides extracted from artificial tide generated by combining $M_2\;and\;S_2$ tidal constituents. Simulation results cleared indicated that tidal effect extends further upstream as the flood discharge decreases. Low flow simulation capabilities of the enhanced model was tested. Discontinuities of water surface elevation due to the submerged weirs were successively simulated.

The Namdae stream in Gangneung-si is one of the rivers where salmon stock is mainly maintained by natural spawning rather than artificial seedlings. There are structures including weir, and fish distribution and movement characteristics can be different by these structures. In this study, we investigated the distribution and behavioral characteristics of salmon by sighting survey within 12 km immediately upstream of the river mouth between October 2021 and February 2022. As a result, salmon distributed within 9 km from rivermouth. There were more salmon in the lower reaches of Doosan weir than in the upper reaches of that. The main spawning ground for salmon was between 7-9 km from rivermouth and around the lower part of Doosan weir. Salmon behaved for spawning in the gravel-bed area and undercut slope of the mainstream, such as mating, digging the riverbed, and competition among males. Salmon moved more slowly in the gravel-bed area than sand-bed area. Doosan weir hinders the spawning migration of salmon by frequent flow changes and terraced fishway. This study provides primary information to understand the ecological changes of salmon by environmental changes in the Namdae stream.

In this study, the simulation of sediment deposition at Sangju weir reservoir, South Korea, was carried out using artificial neural networks. The ANNs have typically been used in water resources engineering problems for their robustness and high degree of accuracy. Three basic variables namely turbid water inflow, outflow, and water stage have been used as input variables. It was found that ANNs were able to establish valid relationship between input variables and target variable of sedimentation. The R value was 0.9806, 0.9091, and 0.8758 for training, validation, and testing phase respectively. Comparative analysis was also performed to find optimum structure of ANN for sediment deposition prediction. 3-14-1 network architecture using BR algorithm outperformed all other combinations. It was concluded that ANN possess mapping capabilities for complex, non-linear phenomenon of reservoir sedimentation.
The purpose of this study was to analyze fish fauna and species compositions along with trophic guilds, tolerance indicators, and fish community conditions before weir construction (BWC) and after weir construction (AWC) in the Yeongsan River watershed. Total 45 and 44 fish species were sampled in BWC and AWC, respectively without any distinct differences through weir constructions. Fish fauna analysis revealed that the dominant species was the same, Zacco platypus with 24.3% and 20.8% in BWC and AWC, respectively. However, the subdominant species were Carassius auratus with 8.9% in BWC but Opsarichthys uncirostris amurensis with 20.3%, almost identical that of the dominant species AWC. This phenomenon showed the distinct modification of species composition in the watershed. We sampled the $1^{st}$ class endangered species, Liobagrus obesus in tributary stream as previously reported. Also Culter brevicauda was sampled in the mainstream of Yeongsan River watershed and this was the first sampled record in this watershed. One of the most important features were an increase of exotic species, such as Micropterus salmoides and Lepomis macrochirus, with 3.2% BWC vs. 10.2% AWC as well as the increase in tolerant species with 49.2% BWC vs. 73.7% AWC, indicating ecological degradation through weir construction. Overall, our results indicated that fish fauna and composition analyses showed distinct ecological degradations related to increases of exotic and tolerant species AWC. Further long-term studies of fish monitoring should be conducted in the future to configure existent status of river conditions and to provide key information in order to conserve the healthy ecosystem.
This study explained the historical changes in the habitat structures based on the aerial photographs (1948, 1967, 1973, 1989 and 2010) of the mid-stream reach of the Mangyeong River. The habitat structure was divided into landforms and aquatic habitats. The landform was classified into bare land, vegetated land, water surface, farmland and artificial land. The aquatic habitat was classified into natural riffle, artificial riffle, run, head wando, tail wando, mid wando, pond and chute channel. The ratio of bareland decreased, and water surface and vegetated land increased after the excavation in 1970s and since the construction of weir in 1980s. As historical changes of aquatic habitat, ratio of run decreased sharply while mid wando increased sharply. aquatic habitats such as head wando, tail wando, and pond located on bars decreased dramatically.
In this study, we estimated the concentration of chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) using hyperspectral water surface reflectance in an inland weir (Baekjae weir) and estuarine reservoir (Namyang Reservoir) for monitoring the occurrence of algae in freshwater in South Korea. The hyperspectral reflectance was measured by aircraft in Baekjae Weir (BJW) from 2016 to 2017, and a drone in Namyang Reservoir (NYR) from 2020 to 2021. The 30 reflectance bands (BJW: 400-530, 620-680, 710-730, 760-790 nm, NYR: 400-430, 655-680, 740-800 nm) that were highly related to Chl-a concentration were selected using permutation importance. Artificial neural network based Chl-a estimation model was developed using the selected reflectance in both water bodies. And the performance of the model was evaluated with the coefficient of determination (R2), the root mean square error (RMSE), and the mean absolute error (MAE). The performance evaluation results of the Chl-a estimation model for each watershed was R2: 0.63, 0.82, RMSE: 9.67, 6.99, and MAE: 11.25, 8.48, respectively. The developed Chl-a model of this study may be used as foundation tool for the optimal management of freshwater algal blooms in the future.
River is able to change by various environmental factors. In order to conduct river restoration design, it is necessary to evaluate the stable channel through the analysis of past and present river channels. River evaluation requires various data, such as geometry, hydraulic and hydrology, but there is a lot of difficulty to understand topographical information of river change on time and space due to a lack of past data by domestic conditions. This study was analyzed abandoned channel formation, changes in the vertical-section and cross-section length of rivers, and micro-landform changes etc using an image analysis technique. Purpose of this research is to evaluates the stable channel through a river channel morphology change from past and present river channels image. Mangyoung river was conducted artificial river maintenance through straight channel consolidation form 1920 to 1930 year. In the result river maintenance, mangyoung river length was decreased by 15 km and abandoned channels of six points were made. Since then, weir was continuously increased to control bed slope and use water. Install of weir was to be the reason of changes on channel width, thalweg, vegetated bar, sand bar, water area. Present Mangyoung river show that water area was temporary increased in upper and middle reach because of weir installation. Total sand bar was only decreased in upper channel. The change of vegetated bar and sand bar was slight recently. In this result, Mangyoung river is inferred to reach stabilized channel although there is some difference to the lower reach.

Artificial and natural changes such as weir construction and climate change often cause abnormal blooming of organism. Therefore, variations in species community of organisms have been actively investigated to identify influential environmental changes on the fresh water ecosystem. In this study, we investigated Chironomidae community and environmental factors at 5 representative weirs (Ipo, IP; Sejong, SJ; Juksan, JS; Gangjeong-goryung, GG; and Dalsung weir) in 4 Korean major rivers to figure out relationship between Chironomidae community and environmental factors. Environmental factors indicating organic matter (total organic carbon, TOC and Chlorophyll-a, Chl-a) showed lower concentration in IP and SJ compared with other sites(JS, GG and DS). 3 sub-family 18 genus 25 species of Chironomidae community were found in this study. Among them, Chironominae was dominant in JS (Tanytarsus sp.1), GG (Polypedilum scalaenum) and DS (Polypedilum scalaenum), while different sub-family were dominant in IP (Orthcladinae, Tokunagayusurika akamushi) and SJ (Tanypodinae, Tanypus punctipennis). Moreover, based on the dominant species of Chironomidae community and environmental factors, the cluster analysis classified our study sites into 3 groups. These results imply that the diet resource is the most important factor for dominance of Chironomidae in Korean rivers. We also suggest that further study on the identification of diet resources for each Chironomidae specie is required for better understating of distribution in species community of Chironomidae at various ecosystems.
