Roughness, aperture and filling material of rock joint are widely considered to affect the hydraulic characteristics of joint. Among these factors, in this study, the joint roughness was examined with artificial joint profiles generated by Monte Carlo simulating on the original profiles suggested by Barton and Choubey(1977). Original profiles and revised profiles were combined to establish flow channel models, in which the hydraulic characteristics were analyzed numerically on the basis of minimum aperture changes and flow channel shapes. Maximum flow rate was identified at the growing point of flow area after passing through minimum aperture generated by the two profiles, and it was resulted that maximum flow rate is inversely proportional to minimum aperture. Maximum flow rate per unit area showed different values because flow channel shapes and minimum aperture locations are different in each model. In flow channel, mechanical aperture showed approximately 1.07 ~ 3.00 times larger than hydraulic aperture. In this study, mechanical and hydraulic aperture were concluded to be closely related to $A_i$ value, and their relations can be denoted by $e_m=0.519A^{0.7169_i}$ and $e_h=0.6182A^{0.239}_i$, respectively.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare self-drilling orthodontic mini-implants of different surfaces, namely, machined (untreated), etched (acid-etched), RBM (treated with resorbable blasting media) and hybrid (RBM + machined), with respect to the following criteria: physical appearance of the surface, measurement of surface roughness, and insertion pattern. Methods: Self-drilling orthodontic mini-implants (Osstem implant, Seoul, Korea) with the abovementioned surfaces were obtained. Surface roughness was measured by using a scanning electron microscope and surface-roughness-testing machine, and torque patterns and vertical loadings were measured during continuous insertion of mini-implants into artificial bone (polyurethane foam) by using a torque tester of the driving-motor type (speed, 12 rpm). Results: The mini-implants with the RBM, hybrid, and acid-etched surfaces had slightly increased maximum insertion torque at the final stage ($p$ < 0.05). Implants with the RBM surface had the highest vertical load for insertion ($p$ < 0.05). Testing for surface roughness revealed that the implants with the RBM and hybrid surfaces had higher Ra values than the others ($p$ < 0.05). Scanning electron microscopy showed that the implants with the RBM surface had the roughest surface. Conclusions: Surface-treated, self-drilling orthodontic mini-implants may be clinically acceptable, if controlled appropriately.

An algorithm has been developed to determine changes in surface topography on asperity level. The software stitches small but detailed images together to create one large image. If such an image is made before and after an experiment, their difference shows a direct 3D view of the changes in micro-geometry, rather than a change in surface parameters. The algorithm is described in detail and illustrated using artificial as well as real surfaces.

This paper describes a novel hybrid surface polishing process combining non-traditional electrochemical polishing (ECP) with external artificial ultrasonic vibration. The purpose of this study is to develop an easier method for improving stainless steel surfaces. To this end, vibration electrochemical polishing (VECP), a novel ultrasonic manufacturing process, for enhancing electrochemical reaction and surface quality compared with that achieved using conventional ECP is suggested. In addition, for finding the optimized experimental conditions, the two methods are compared under various current densities. Localized roughness of the work material is measured with atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for obtaining detailed surface information.

Rumbling sound is one of the most important interior sound of a passenger car. The conventional rumbling noise research was focused on the reduction of the A-weighted sound pressure level. However A-weighted sound pressure level can not give the whole story about the rumbling sound of a passenger car. In this paper, we employed sound metric which is the subjective parameter used in psycoacoustics. According to recent research results, the relation between sound metrics and subjective evaluation is very complex and has nonlinear characteristics. In order to estimate this nonlinear relationship, artificial neural network theory has been applied to derivation of sound quality index for rumbling sound of a passenger car.
The effective ionization coefficient in $SF_{6}$/$N_{2}$ mixtures was attempted to derive from the pure gases. Measurements of static breakdown voltage were made under the uniform field at pressures up to 4 bar in order to compare with the results obtained from this assumption. The relative performance of $SF_{6}$/$N_{2}$ mixtures to pure $SF_{6}$ was also investigated. The effect of surface roughness on discharge thresholds in $SF_{6}$/$N_{2}$ mixtures was calculated employing the simplified model and mesurements of breakdown voltages for a gap with an artificial protrustion were also made. The experimental results show that the effective ionization coefficient in gas mixtures can not be reliably estimated from the values measured for the pure gases. Therefore, basic parameters for $SF_{6}$/$N_{2}$ mixtures must be measured by investigation of the mixtures themselves. The relative performance of mixtures to pure $SF_{6}$ could be considered with the values of pR.

The final quality of the workpiece is affected by the grinding process that has been conducted in final manufacturing stage. However the quality-satisfaction of ground workpiece depends on the skill of an expert in this process. Therefore, the process models of grinding have been developed to predict the states according to grinding process. In this paper, in order to find the optimized grinding condition to reduce the manufacturing expense and to meet requirements of ground workpiece optimization algorithm using E.S.(Evolutionary Strategy) is proposed. The proposed algorithm has been employed to find the optimal grinding and dressing condition using the grinding process models and nonlinear grinding constraints. The optimized results also presents the guide line of grinding process. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is verified through the experimental results.
A conditional probability based approach known as Particle Filter Method (PFM) is a powerful tool for system parameter identification. In this paper, PFM has been applied to identify the vehicle parameters based on response statistics of the bridge. The flexibility of vehicle model has been considered in the formulation of bridge-vehicle interaction dynamics. The random unevenness of bridge has been idealized as non homogeneous random process in space. The simulated response has been contaminated with artificial noise to reflect the field condition. The performance of the identification system has been examined for various measurement location, vehicle velocity, bridge surface roughness factor, noise level and assumption of prior probability density. Identified vehicle parameters are found reasonably accurate and reconstructed interactive force time history with identified parameters closely matches with the simulated results. The study also reveals that crude assumption of prior probability density function does not end up with an incorrect estimate of parameters except requiring longer time for the iterative process to converge.

In order to find the best design of artificial stream for the riverbed filtration in multi-purpose filtration pond, a mathematical model was developed employing the energy line and the Manning's formula and was analyzed by the Euler's technique. Various design factors were investigated through scenario analyses of the artificial stream using the model. Results showed that the appropriate slope of the stream bottom was 2/10,000 and the appropriate infiltration rate at the streambed was $2.5m^3/m^2-day$ for the pond with the area of 100 ha, and that the Manning's roughness coefficient in this case was expected to be about 0.026 and the maximum water-depth was less than 1m. It was also shown that the longer the artificial stream the more advantageous it became for the riverbed filtration. Furthermore, results showed that it was not an efficient way to prevent clogging of the streambed by increasing the flow velocity of the stream and that the performance was higher near a weir with a large head drop.

Statement of problem: Volume stability, microstructure reproducibility and fluidity along with compatibility with dental stone must be in consideration in order to use tissue conditioner as a material for functional impression. There are few studies concerning the influence of time factor in oral condition on surface roughness of the stone and optimal retention period in the oral cavity considering such changes in surface roughness. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to find out the influence of various kinds of tissue conditioner, its powder/liquid ratio and immersion time on surface roughness of the stone. Material and methods: Materials used in this study were the three kinds of tissue conditioners(Coe-Comfort, Visco-Gel, Soft-Liner) and were grouped into three: group R-mixed with standard powder/liquid ratio that was recommended by the manufacturers, group M-mixed with 20% more powder, group L-mixed with 20% less powder. Specimens were made with the size of 20 mm diameter and 2 mm width. Each tissue conditioner specimens were subdivided into 5 groups according to the immersion time(0 hour, 1 day, 3 days, 5 days, 7 days), completely immersed into artificial saliva and were stored under $37^{\circ}C$. Specimens of which the given immersion time elapsed were taken out and were poured with improved stone, making the stone specimens. Surface roughness of the stone specimens was measured by a profilometer. Results: Within the limitation of this study, the following results were drawn. 1. Major influencing factor on surface roughness of the stone model made from tissue conditioner was the retention period(contribution ratio($\rho$)=62.86%, P<.05) of the tissue conditioner in oral cavity to make functional impression. 2. In case of Coe-Comfort, higher mean surface roughness value of the stone model with statistical significance was observed compared to that of Soft-Liner and Visco-Gel as immersion time changes(P<.05). 3. In case of group L(less), higher mean surface roughness value of the stone model with statistical significance was observed compared to that of R(recommended) and M(more) group as immersion time changes(P<.05). Conclusion: We may conclude that as the retention period of time in oral cavity influences surface roughness of the stone model the most and as the kind of tissue conditioner and its P/L ratio may influence also, clinician should well understand the optimal retention period in oral cavity and choose the right tissue conditioner for the functional impression, thus making the functional impression with tissue conditioner usefully.
