Studies on Temporal Variabilities of Community Structure of Benthic Marine Organisms on Horn Triangle Artificial Reefs along the Jangkil-ri Coast of Pohang, South Korea (포항시 장길리 해역에 설치된 뿔삼각형어초에 서식하는 저서동물의 시간적 흐름에 따른 군집변화 분석)

  • In Korea, the government has invested the installation of artificial reefs (ARs) which deploying to enhance the restoration of marine environment and productivity on the coastal area at the part of 222,627ha, from 1971 to 2014 for 44 years. The number of ARs are gradually increasing, while their comparison and corelation analysis were not much studied. Therefore, this study is to analyse temporal variation of ARs which composed of concrete named the Horn triangle reefs were deployed at Pohang, Jangkil-ri, a depth of 5 to 7m, in 2003, was monitored 4 times from 2009 to 2011. In results, the biodiversity investigated that the dominant species was Mollusca Omphalius pfeifferi except in 2009. The different species mainly depend on spatial-temporal variation. In this type of study can be used to the R&D, management and government policy of ARs as well improving marine environment.

  • Stability and durability of the artificial reefs (ARs) for wildstock enhancement have been a key issue. We surveyed the side scan sonar (SSS), multi beam echo sounder (MBES) and scuba diving surveys confirmed that the ARs stability was age and type-dependent. A case of the stability of 8,438 ARs (60 group ARs) installed at 4 sites (Yangyang, Gangeung, Donghae and Samcheok) along the Gangwon coast of the East Sea (Sea of Japan). And a confirmation amount to 85.4% ARs remained safe, the rest 14.6% being influenced by a physical parameter of the waters. The representative influences by their circumstances were of breakage (6.3%). capsizing (8.3%). A group of a ARs to 61.7% ARs remained safe, the rest 38.3% being influenced by a physical parameter of the waters. The representative influences by their circumstances were of buried.

  • Considering the artificial reef (AR) canyon intervals facilitated by flatly distributed placement models, the wake volumes of 25 AR sets were characterized through the following works. First, twenty-five different canyon intervals were established to investigate how the intervals affect the wake volumes of the AR placement models, each with nine cube-type ARs. Second, the element-based finite-volume method was used to facilitate flow analyses. Third, the so-called wake volume concept was adopted, and finally a reasonable placement interval was found based on the size of the wake volumes and the associated unit propagation indices. From the analysis results, it was found that a maximum wake volume of 25.18 m3 was generated when the longitudinal and transverse intervals were fixed at 6 m and 0 m, respectively. Thus, to magnify the wake volume, it is recommended that artificial reefs be placed at intervals of 6 m (3 times the reef length) in the flow direction, with no intervals in the normal direction, implicitly indicating that an intensively stacked placement model is a better option to efficiently secure a larger wake volume for the cube-type ARs.
