  • The performance of an ultrasonic array sensor is determined by the properties of constituent materials and the effects of many structural parameters. In this study, with the finite element method, variation of the performances of an ultrasonic array sensor was analyzed in relation to its structural variables. Based on the analysis result, the structure of the ultrasonic array sensor was optimized to provide the highest sensitivity while satisfying such requirements as fractional bandwidth, center frequency and -20 dB pulse length. The optimization was carried out with the SQP-PD method for a target function composed of the ultrasonic array sensor performance. The optimized ultrasonic array sensor satisfied all the required specifications to be applicable to medical imaging diagnosis. The design technology in this paper can be utilized for other ultrasonic array sensors of a similar structure.

  • The structural optimization is carried out in the continuous design space or discrete design space. Methods for discrete variables such as genetic algorithms are extremely expensive in computational cost. In this research, an iterative optimization algorithm using orthogonal arrays is developed for design in discrete space. An orthogonal array is selected on a discrete design space and levels are selected from candidate values. Matrix experiments with the orthogonal array are conducted. New results of matrix experiments are obtained with penalty functions for constraints. A new design is determined from analysis of means(ANOM). An orthogonal array is defined around the new values and matrix experiments are conducted. The final optimum design is found from iterative process. The suggested algorithm has been applied to various problems such as truss and frame type structures. The results are compared with those from a genetic algorithm and discussed.

  • Thin-film transistor (TFT) arrays for an x-ray detector require quite different design concept from that of the conventional active-matrix liquid crystal devices (AM-LCDs). In this paper anew design of TFT array which uses only SiNx for passivation layer is described to meet the detector performance and the product availability simultaneously. For the purpose of optimizing the design parameters of the TFT array, a Spice simulation was performed. As a result, some parameters, such as the TFT width, the data line capacitance, and the storage capacitance, were able to be fixed. The other parameters were decided within a permissible range of the TFT process especially the photolithography process and the wet etch process. Then we adapted the TFT array which had been produced by the proposed design to our prototype model (FDXD-1417 and evaluated it clinically by comparing with a commercial model (EPEX, Hologic, Beford, USA). The results say that our prototype model is slightly better than EPEX system in chest PA images. So we can prove the technical usefulness and the commercial values of the proposed TFT design.

  • An active-matrix LCD using thin film transistors (TFT) has been widely recognized as having potential for high-quality color flat-panel displays. Pixel-Design Array Simulation Tool (PDAST) was used to profoundly understand the gate si후미 distortion and pixel charging capability. which are the most critical limiting factors for high-quality TFT-LCDs. Since PDAST can simulate the gate, data and pixel voltages of a certain pixel on TFT array at any time and at any location on an array, the effect of the resistivity of gate line material on the pixel operations can be effectively analyzed. The gate signal delay, pixel charging ratio and level-shift of the pixel voltage were simulated with varying the parameters. The information obtained from this study could be utilized to design the larger area and finer image quality panel.

  • The object of this paper is to evaluate the surface roughness using the experimental equation of surface roughness, which is developed in turning by an orthogonal array method. $L_9{3^4}$ orthogonal array method, one of fractional factorial design has been used to study effects of main cutting parameters such as cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut, on the surface roughness. And the analysis of variance (ANOVA)-test has been used to check the significance of cutting parameters. Using the result of ANOVA-test, the experimental equation of surface roughness, which consists of only significant cutting parameter - feed rate, has been developed. The coefficient of determination of this equation is 0.962.

  • Experimental study on the fluidelastic instability (FEI) of a curved tube bundle in single phase downward cross flow is investigated for the design qualification and analysis input preparation of helical coiled steam generator tubing. A 6×9 normal square curved tube array with equal and different vertical/horizontal pitch-to-diameter ratio was under-tested up to 6 m/s in term of gap flow velocity to measure the critical velocity for FEI. The critical velocity for FEI was measured at the turning point from the vibration amplitude plot along the gap flow velocity. Our test results were compared with straight tube results and published data in the design guideline. The applicability of the current design guidelines to a curved tube bundle is also assessed. We found that introducing frequency difference in a curved tube array increases the critical velocity for fluidelastic instability.

  • In onshore and offshore plant engineering, a broad use of pipe system have been achieved and accordingly related technologies has been developed especially in the field of flow control valves. The aim of this study is to suggest the quadruple offset butterfly valve for bi-directional applications which show equivalent operating torque characteristics of the triple offset butterfly valve. Seat design parameters for the quadruple offset butterfly valve are determined by the proposed method utilizing both ANOVA (analysis of variance) and the orthogonal array. Through additive model considering the effect of design parameters on seating torque, mean estimation is performed and thus its optimization results are verified by design of experiment results. The insight obtained from the present study is beneficial for valve design engineers to develop reliable and integrated design of the quadruple offset butterfly valve.

  • Robust design is an approach to reducing performance variation of quality characteristic values in quality engineering. Product array approach which is used in the Taguchi parameter design has a number of advantages by considering the noise factor. Taguchi has an idea that mean and variation are handled simultaneously to reduce the expected loss in products and processes. Taguchi has used the signal-to-noise ratio (SN) to achieve the appropriate set of operating conditions where variability around target is low in the Taguchi parameter design. Many Statisticians criticize the Taguchi techniques of analysis, particularly those based on the SN. In this paper we propose a substantially simpler optimization procedure for robust design using desirability function without resorting to SN.

  • The safety analysis becomes very essential in the crash environment with the growth of automobile industry. Recently, an airbag system is required to protect the occupant. The effects of an airbag can be evaluated exactly from the barrier or sled test which is quite expensive. The airbag system in a passenger car is analyzed with the occupant analysis program. The modeling of the passenger car including an airbag is established and the results are verified by comparisons with real crash tests. However, the solution of an airbag design can not be obtained easily with the conventional method such as an optimization due to the nonlinearity and complexity of the problem. An iterative design algorithm using the orthogonal array is proposed to overcome the difficulties. The design trend of an airbag is recommended to minimize the injury of an occupant with the proposed design algorithm and the results are discussed.

  • On this study. we improved the efficiency applying algorithm that is repeatedly using table of orthogonal array in discrete design space and filling a defect of gradient method in continuous design space. we showed optimal ply angle that maximized 1st natural frequency of CFRP laminated composite plate without a hole and with a hole by each aspect ratio. In the case of CFRP laminated composite plate without a hole, we confirmed the reliance and efficiency of algorithm in comparison with the result of optimization achievement repeatedly using statistical table of orthogonal array of experimental design and the BFGS optimal design method.
