  • This article deals with the stress analysis of the friction drive, which transmits the power via the rolling resistance on the contract area between the two rotating bodies. On the contact area, friction drives are normally involved with shear stress due to the transmitted force, as well as normal stress. Thus the stress analysis including the shear stress is necessary for the design of the friction drive. Hertzian results can be used to estimate the normal stress distribution and elastic deflection of the contact area, although the shear stress distribution is not well defined. In order to investigate the shear stress distribution and its effects in a friction drive, we have performed the stress analysis of the spherical continuously variable transmission(CVT) using finite element method. The spherical CVT is one of friction drives, which is used in small power applications. The numerical results show that the normal stress distribution is not affected by the transmitted shear force, and the maximal shear stress is increased in small amount along with the shear force.

  • A total of 202 full coverage crowns from 31 patients was investigated to find out the relationships between crown contour and gingival response. Every experimental crown has its contralateral natural tooth for its control group. Gingival Index and buccolingual width of the crowns were measured on both experimental and control group. Following conclusions were obtained from the study. 1. Most of the crown restorations were overcontoured and the increments were servere at cervical and height of contour area. 2. Height of contour and contact point of the restored crown were located near cervical area. Besides, most crowns had narrow embrasure with wide contact area. 3. Gingival Index around crown restorations was significantly larger than that of control group. 4. the interrelationship between Gingival Index and restored material or restored period was not verified at 5% significant level. 5. When grouping the artificial crowns into overcontoured, normal contoured, and undercontoured group by their width increment, the gingival inflammation was the severest in the overcontoured group and the mildest in the undercontoured group.

  • This paper aims to derive a mathematical model of the dynamics of handling task in field robot which stable grasping and manipulates a rigid object with some dexterity. Firstly, a set of differential equation describing dynamics of the manipulators and object together with geometric constraints of tight area-contacts on motion of the overall system is analyzed and a method of computer simulation for overall system of differential-algebraic equations is presented. Thirdly, simulation results are shown and the effects of geometric constraints of contact-area are discussed. Finally, it is shown that even in the simplest case of dual single D.O.F. manipulators there exists a sensory feedback from sensing data of he rotational angle of the object to command inputs to joint actuators and this feedback connection from sensing to action eventually realizes secure grasping of the object, provided that he object is of rectangular shape and motion is confined to a horizontal

  • Precambrian metasedimetay rocks in the Sunchang Shear Zone (so-called Seologri and Yongamsan Formation) consist of black slate, phylite, mica schistm quartzite and rarely calc schist. The metamorphic rocks in the area have undergone at least three stages of metamorphism, which are two prograde (M1 and M2) and one contact metamorphism (M3). The metamorphism which made the most prevailing mineral assemblages in the area, is M2 stage metamorphism. The metamorphic grade of M2 methamorphism in metapelites increases from the Chlorite zone through Biotituzone, Garnet zone to Staurolite zone. The M1 stage metamorphism is recognized by kyanite and sillimanite pressure type regional metamorphism. The M3 stage methamorphism is represented in the contact boundary, which area is the chlorite zone and biotite zone near the Sunchang foliated granite and the namwon granite. The M3 stage methamorphism is characterized by andalusite bearing mineral assemblages. The peak temperature condition of M2 metamorphism estimated from coexising garnet and biotite (Kretz, 1990) is 518~598$^{\circ}C$.

  • In a micro-scale contact, surface forces such as capillary force and van der Waals Interaction significantly Influence the contact between asperities of rough surfaces. Little is, however, known about the variation of these surface forces as a function of chemical property of the surface (hydrophilicity), relative humidity and deformation of asperities In the real area of contact. A better understanding of these surface forces is of great necessity in order to find an optimal solution for reducing friction and adhesion of micro surfaces. We proposed an effective method to analyze capillary and van der Waals forces In nano-scale contact. In this method, Winklerian foundation model was employed to analyze the contact of rough surfaces that were obtained from atomic force microscopy (AFM) height Images. Self-mated contact of diamond-like-carbon (DLC) coatings was analyzed, as an example, by the proposed model. It was shown that the capillary force was significantly influenced by relative humidify and wet angle of the DLC surface. The deformation of asperities to a critical magnitude by external loading led to a considerable increase of both capillary and van der Waals forces.

  • In this paper, the geometry effectiveness and contact modes as functions of real contact length on a cap ring have been analyzed for high pressure sealing mechanism in reciprocating actuator. The reaction force and elastic strain energy density are very important parameters for analyzing the sealing performance of an ACGT ring seal. For the high pressure of 800bar and the maximum speed of 3m/s, the main piston is reciprocating along the linear line against the cylinder wall. The computed results indicate that the length ratio of a cap ring is more influential design parameter compared to that of the tribological contact mode. Thus, this paper recommends the discrete contact area rather than a conventional flat contact model. Especially, the sealing capacity is more improved when the length ratio of a cap ring is below 0.625.

  • Although many structures based on $SnO_2$ nanowires have been demonstrated, there is a limitation towards practical application due to the unwanted contact potential between the metal electrode and the $SnO_2$ nanowire. This is mostly due to the presence of the native oxide layer that acts as an insulator between the metal contact and the nanowire. In this study the contact properties between Ti/Au contacts and a single $SnO_2$ nanowire was compared to the electrical properties of a contact without the oxide layer. RIE(Reactive Ion Etching) is used to selectively remove the oxide layer from the contact area. The $SnO_2$ nanowires were synthesized by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and dispersed on a $Si/Si_3N_4$ substrate. The Ti/Au (20nm/100nm) electrodes were formed bye-beam lithography, e-beam evaporation and a lift-off process.

  • The thermal contact resistance (TCR) is one of the important resistance components in cryogenic systems. Cryogenic measurement devices using a cryocooler can be affected by TCR because the device has to consist of several metal components that are in contact with each other for heat transfer to the specimen without a cryogen. Therefore, accurate measurement and understanding of TCR is necessary for the design of cryogenic measurement devices using a cryocooler. The TCR occurs at the interface between metals and it can be affected by variable factors, such as the roughness of the metal surface, the contact area and the contact pressure. In this study, we designed a TCR measurement system at variable temperature using a cryocooler as a heat sink. Copper was selected as a specimen in the experiment because it is widely used as a heat transfer medium in cryogenic measurement devices. We measured the TCR between Cu and Cu for various temperatures and contact pressures. The effect of the interfacial materials on the TCR was also investigated.

  • We have clearly investigated with respect to the survival of the insulator at cryogenic temperature under the electrical stress. The breakdown and voltage-time characteristics of turn-to-turn models for point contact geometry and surface contact geometry using copper multi wrapped with polyimide film for an HTS transformer were investigated under AC and impulse voltage at 77 K. Polyimide film (Kapton) 0.025 mm thick is used for multi wrapping of the electrode. As expected, the breakdown voltages for the surface contact geometry are lower than that of the point contact geometry, because the contact area of the surface contact geometry is lager than that of the point contact geometry. The time to breakdown t50 decreases as the applied voltage is increased, and the lifetime indices increase slightly as the number of layers is increased. The electric field amplitude at the position where breakdown occurs is about 80 % of the maximum electric field value. The relationship between survival probability and the electrical stress at cryogenic temperature was evident.
