It is well known there are a lot of undeveloped energy resource in the Arctic circle. As global warming enables the use of Arctic sea routes, the interest in Arctic resource development is increasing. Recently, polar neighbors and developed countries are actively promoting construction project in Arctic circle. However, the issue of environmental pollution caused by Arctic resource development has been raised. Today, environmental issues have a significant impact on the success of the project as well as on the costs of Arctic development projects. Therefore, it is necessary to secure a technology related to energy resource development and transportation for the Arctic resource project. In addition, the establishment of strategy for environmental impact assessment (EIA) is important. This paper shows the characteristics and procedures of EIA for developing Arctic resources, and reviews how to construct the systematically management of the necessary information. This system consists of a database required for environmental impact assessment and its application. The system is expected to be utilized for strategic development projects in the Arctic.

Sea ice properties have been considered a key indicator in the structural design criteria of icebreaking vessels and arctic offshore platforms to estimate design ice load and resistance for their safety management in Arctic Ocean. A measurement study of sea ice properties was conducted during July to August of 2011 with the Korean icebreaking research vessel "Araon" around Chukchi Borderland. The sea ice concentration appears to be rapidly decreasing during this cruise. Ice condition seems to be thick second-year ice and multi-year ice and then, a lot of melt ponds were observed in the surface of ice floe. Calculated flexural strength of sea ice was about 250~550kPa, ice thickness was roughly 1.3~3.0m. In this research we performed field experiment to measure ice temperature along the depth, thickness, density, salinity, brine volume ratio and crystal structure. Apparent conductivities derived with the electromagnetic induction instrument were compared to drill hole measurement results and accuracy of sea ice thickness estimation formula was discussed.
The purpose of this study is to Analyze the problems that container shipping companies exist through the commercialization of container shipping for Non-Arctic countries and the opportunity factors for the transport of the Arctic shipping to improve cooperation cross-border relation Arctic policy and the use of transport. In order to design a hierarchy analysis method study model, four high and 17 low factors were extracted by designing a hierarchy analysis method study model based on results by prior study and in-depth interview. The first of the higher factors is the internal strength of assessing the value of the Arctic, the will and capabilities of the shipping companies in creating new markets with the vision and goals of the shipping companies. Second, the internal constraints associated with the shipping companies advance to the NSR mean the negative factors for the entry into the NSR and the internal weaknesses that cause the shipping companies capacity limitations. Third, the economic benefits from the use of NSR are external factor for shipping companies in cooperation with the future economic value of the Arctic and with respect to Arctic sea and Arctic advance and development from Arctic coastal countries. Finally, external pre-emptive tasks means to respond to use NSR by external restrictions on transport to prepare the possibility of severe weather conditions, the customs policy change of coastal countries.
Ice loads may be conveniently categorized as local ice loads and global ice loads. Local ice loads are often defined as ice pressures acting on local areas of shell plates and stiffeners. Therefore, local ice loads are defined in all ice class rules. However, directly measuring the local ice pressure using the actual ice class vessel is a very difficult task because appropriate instruments for direct measurement must be installed on the outer hull, and they are easily damaged by direct ice contacts/impacts. This paper focuses on the estimation of the local ice pressure using the data obtained from icebreaking tests in the Arctic sea in 2010 using the Korean icebreaking research vessel (IBRV) ARAON. When she contacted the sea ice, the local deformation of the side shell was measured by the strain gauges attached to the inside of the shell. Simultaneously, the contact area between the side shell and sea ice is investigated by analyzing the distribution of the measured strain data. Finally, the ice pressures for different contact areas are estimated by performing a structural analysis.
The marine algal flora of the Keret Archipelago ($66^{\circ}$ N, $33^{\circ}$ E) in the White Sea, Russia was investigated during 2008. Over 250 algal records from more than 15 islands and several sites on the adjoining mainland produced a total of 62 algal species. This raised the total from 56 to 88 species of Chlorophyta (23 species), Phaeophyceae (31 species), Rhodophyta (33 species), and Tribophyceae (1 species) of which seven were new records or verifications of ambiguous records for the White Sea and 11 species are new for the Keret Archipelago. The new or confirmed records included species of Blidingia, Eugomontia, Prasiola, Rosenvingiella, and Ulothrix (Chlorophyta), Acrochaetium, Colaconema (Rhodophyta), and Vaucheria (Tribophyceae). Five species of flowering plants (Aster, Plantago, Triglochin, and Zostera) were associated with the macrophytic algal vegetation of the region. Five fucoid algae in Pelvetia, Fucus, and Ascophyllum provide a picture of a temperate flora. Regardless, the overall species richness is consistent with an arctic nature to the flora. This discrepancy is attributed to the 'filter' provided by the Barents Sea of the Arctic Ocean for post-glacial colonization of the White Sea.
The most distinctive feature of the costumes of the Arctic regions from Alaska to Siberia centering around the Bering Sea connecting Asia to North America, is that each tribe makes clothes adequate to the climate and their lifestyles with animal hides obtained from hunting in their habitation. Furs or fish skins, the main materials for clothing, are characteristically cut into many pieces, and thus piece-joining patchwork is used to make or decorate garments. Patchwork is the technique that can create new designs with 3-dimensional and various combinations by modifying the simple materials, and also has the advantage of fitting the body without a certain cut line. Therefore, the patchwork found in the Arctic costumes may be developed from folk costume designs with limited materials like fur into new ones for modern or future costumes.
As a study of Arctic marine survey project, Side-scan sonar survey was carried out in the Pechora Sea belonging to the southeaster part of Barents Sea. The study area is a shallow sea 11 m-16 m deep with recent sediments of rich organic carbon. Side-scan sonar profiles show large-scale marine plant communities 2-3 m wide covering the southeastern area. A lot of lineaments are traced on the seafloor in the central and northern area. The major trends of the lineaments are 220°and 290°(WSW-ENE and WNW-ESE). This trends is thought to be a main path of icebergs. Pockmarks on the seafloor are locally distributed in the area, which are formed by fluid and/or gas discharge. These would be related with petroleum/gas system well developed around the study area. Dut to weak appearances and limited distribution of the pockmarks, more detailed studies are necessary to examine their nature and structure.

Long chain alkyl diols (LCDs) have been reported in sediments from various marine environments. Rampen et al. (2012) introduced the paleo-sea surface temperature (SST) proxy, Long chain Diol Index (LDI) based on the relative abundance of $C_{30}$ 1,15-diol, $C_{28}$ 1,13-diol, and $C_{30}$ 1,13-diol. In general, CP-Sil5CB and DB-5ms columns have been used for the quantitative and qualitative analysis of LCDs with a GC-MS. In this study, we examined the effect of three different columns (CP-Sil5CB, HP-5ms and DB-5) on the quantitative analysis of LCDs using marine sediments from the East Sea of Korea and the western Arctic Ocean. In general, our study showed that the results of CP-Sil5CB differed significantly from those of HP-5ms and DB-5. However, the differences of the LDI-derived SSTs among three columns were $0.1-0.2^{\circ}C$ for the East Sea and $0.2-0.7^{\circ}C$ for the western Arctic Ocean, which were well within the calibration error range (${\pm}1{\sigma}$). Accordingly, our study showed that the use of different columns resulted in significant differences of LCDs concentrations, but its effect on the LDI was relatively insignificant. Therefore, it appears that the different columns can be used for the paleo-SST reconstruction in the East Sea and the western Arctic Ocean using the LDI proxy.

Arctic Ocean has rapidly melted due to global warming, by this, commercial ship has been operating through the area. Reason to develop the Northern Sea Route(NSR) even in extreme conditions, the distance than the existing route is shortened, which bring economic benefits. For these reason, the International Maritime Organization(IMO) established safety standards of the Arctic navigation(Polar Code) in order to ensure safe operation in the Northern Sea Route. In this study, it has been described ice types and safety standards of Artic vessel what officer needs to know for safe navigation on the Arctic Ocean. And It was verified by simulation the theoretical knowledge for the safe operation of the Arctic vessel. As a result, it was found that ship needs to reduce speed and analyze ice for safe operation before enter into the ice, it is necessary to enter at right angle to break ice safety and efficiently. Also according to the result of the simulation of navigation entering in ice channel(Lead), it was difficult to change course, it is believed that require emergency training for passing Vessel. In the future, It shall be analyzed precisely under various conditions of scenario.
Energy Balance Model (EBM) was used to experiment the distribution of surface equilibrium temperature which responds to external forcing associated with the surface characteristics. Surface equilibrium temperature is calculated as sum of incoming solar radiation and latitudinal transport is balanced with outgoing infrared radiation. To treat incoming solar radiation, the source of the earth energy, significantly for energy balance, the experiment for surface equilibrium temperature distribution was performed considering the energy balance with the latitudinal albedo change as well as land and sea distribution. In addition, linear albedo change experiment, arctic albedo 5%, 10%, 15% change experiments and the opposite albedo change experiments between arctic and mid-latitudes were performed using incoming solar radiation as an external forcing. Moreover, with and without ice-albedo feedback experiments were performed. Increasing of arctic albedo is blocked out the incoming solar radiation so that it induces decreasing of latitudinal heat transport. It is strengthened energy transport from low latitudes by keeping arctic low energy states. Therefore the temperature change in the mid-latitudes exhibits larger response than that of arctic due to the difference of transport. The land which has lower heat capacity than sea can be reach to equilibrium temperature shortly. Also land is more sensitive to temperature change with respects to albedo. Thus it induces the thermal difference between land and sea. As a result, the equilibrium temperature exhibits differently as the difference of albedo and heat capacity which are the one of surface characteristics. Surface equilibrium temperature decreases as albedo increase and the ratio of temperature change is large as heat capacity is small. The decreasing of surface equilibrium temperature with respects to increasing of linear albedo is accelerated by ice-albedo feedback. However local change of surface equilibrium temperature decreases non-linearly.
