Many government agencies have used domestic deacidification equipments to stabilize archives; however, no agency has verified archives' current preservative status. We studied the Nara National Archives' documents that had treated by mass deacidification process from 2001 to 2012, in order to examine the documents' preservative status and how efficient the mass deacidification has been. Approximately 1% of total 112,970 Nara National Archives' documents treated by mass deacidification were randomly selected and evaluated on their current measure of acidity and color change. Regardless of the kinds of document material, a wide range of pH level was found. Especially those documents that were treated by mass deacidification equipment after 2006 showed acidic conditions that were less than pH 6.8 level. Those documents were probably not treated properly by deacidifying chemical because of tightly packing style. The current measures of acidity and color records will be useful as a reference for future evaluations of further decay of the documents. It was the first study to evaluate acidity and color conditions of Nara National Archives' documents treated by mass deacidification equipment. We concluded that when using mass deacidification equipment, archives should not be loaded tightly in order for them to be fully in contact with deacidifying chemical.

Public image on the Archives is investigated through media coverage of archival profession, institutions and collections in Korea between 2003 and 2004 in this research. News stories under the subject of archives are collected and categorized into archival culture, value of records, business archives, government records and civil rights movement, and archivists and archival advocacy. The patterns of the media coverage are discovered and analyzed from various viewpoints. As a result, ongoing proactive public relations with mass media are necessary in order to enhance currently low public image of archives of Korea.

This paper reports the evaluation of six open-source software systems for participatory digital archives. This is an effort to create a digital platform for the social memory of No Gun Ri, which was first recognized in 1999 as a civilian massacre. The process of how it was reported and investigated is critical to understanding this brutal incident. In addition, the course of its cultural recovery has witnessed the reconstruction of the No Gun Ri memory. Thus, it is important to embrace the social memory around the massacre in these archives. In consideration of a virtual space for memory, this study takes the form of participatory archives to provide a mechanism in which anyone can share their memories. As a way to find a digital archives system for No Gun Ri, this study analyzed open-source software based on identified functions and requirements for participatory digital archives. Knowing the details of digital systems, this study discussed how contents for social memory can be stored and used in a digital system.

The purpose of the research is to evaluate the current online PR activities focused on the websites of university archives. To achieve the goal, the research developed the indicators to assess online PR activities by synthesizing both the factors derived from the basic components and concepts of PRs at university archives and the existing indexes for evaluating the online PRs of related cultural organizations such as libraries, museums, archives, and non-profit organizations. The research found that most university archives did not have promotional activities positively because there was lack of archival information services development. Even if there were some archival information services, they were not actively publicizing the facts. On the basis of the results, the research suggested the alternatives to improve online PR activities and follow-up research topics to supplement limitations of the research.

Fiber identification was attempted for the early twenty century documents that were classified as national archives in Korea, as an initial step for establishing scientific preservation and restoration method. Fiber staining with C stain and a digital microscope were used for the observation. All the documents observed consisted of mostly softwood fibers from fir (Abies) and other minor supplementary fibers, and they were all deteriorated seriously by various damages and aging process. It seemed that at around 1914-1934, fir was used frequently as papermaking raw material.

This study aims to identify the problems of the records management of the foothold national university related university-industry collaboration. For these purpose, the study conducted a literature survey. Moreover, this study compared and analyzed the content of university archives and university-industry collaboration web sites. In addition, we gained the materials from the national archives in Korea thorough a request of information disclosure. It was found that problems and improvements in terms of institutional and achievement management. Consequently, based on the analysis, cooperation framework between university archives and university-industry collaboration was developed. With the proposed system, the academic utilization of university-industry collaboration records can be facilitated.

This study investigates how participatory digital archives should handle user-contributed content in order to legitimately collect from and make available to users according to current copyright laws and related regulations. In doing so, this study surveys the current national and international copyright laws that would apply for digital contents in archives. It also reviews the existing literature that analyzes the understanding and interpretation of regulations and specific infringement cases. Then, it examines the cases of participatory digital archives as to how they deal with the copyright issues to user-contributed content and provide guidance to users in this respect. Based on such analysis, the study suggests a few methods of how digital archives acquire necessary rights for the user-contributed content being housed in archives and how they provide useful guidance to users about their rights and responsibilities. These methods include terms and conditions for contribution/service and essential elements in terms, contributor agreements and their details, and other user guidelines.

The purpose of this study was to clarify similarity and identity between university library and archives through comparison of their information materials, functions and organizations. As a results, the archives are so much similar to library in the records, functions. It means what they can use the library resources together. The archives organizations mainly belongs to museum and rarely to libraries and administration organizations.
