  • Aural archival description has been rarely discussed, although it is one of the important process in managing and using aural archives. Aural archives not being cataloged are difficult to access; moreover they require tools and a lot of time to search appropriate records. This study concerning characteristics of archival description and aural archives analyzed rules for aural archival description in United Kingdom, Canada and United States of America Comparing and analyzing rules, a rules for aural archival description in Korea was proposed and arranged into eight areas modified from seven areas of ISAD(G). This study focused on developing rules for description covering all aspects of aural archives in Korea. The rules for aural archival description will offer a base of Korean Rules for Archival Description and building aural archival databases.

  • This Study is to propose the archival description in accordance with the paradigm shift of the archival science. The academic world of archival science in North America treated the electric record in 1990 and the authenticity of electric record in the beginning of 2000, the flow of Study recognizing the microscopic and the cultural discussion appeared recently. This may be called the paradigm shift of archival science. This may be according to the influence of the informatization and the technology. However, the community archives, the everyday life archives recognizing the microscopic and the cultural discussion, etc. Namely, the everyday life, the village, the community archives are the effort to leave the excluded and the neglected voices from the existing discussion of archival science on record. However, the currently existing methodology to archive the community archives based on the perception of these switched recognition is limited. Especially the description of the various standards being used in the public territory is being adapted as it is. The characteristic and the individuality of the community and the community archive cannot be reflected through the archival description standard. We should understand the community archive in accordance with the paradigm shift, need the archival description method capable of expressing this suitably. The post-standard not the existing archival description method has been necessary. This should be carried out together in accordance with the view point of the paradigm shift and the view point of the objective and the direction of community. Hence, first the archival description and the paradigm shift have been examined theoretically and the archival description of community archive being operated currently has been analyzed. The archival description is to be proposed in accordance with the paradigm shift capable of calling 'the archival description of Korean Human Right' by pointing out the limit of archival description standard through the analysis and further by investigating the archival description of the fraternity archive project.

  • Previously, the International Council of Archives (ICA) provided the General International Standard Archival Description (ISAD(G)) and the International Standard Archival Authority Record for Corporate Bodies, Persons and Families (ISAAR(CPF)) for the systematic archival description by the Committee on Best Practice and Standards. Recently, the new conceptual model and ontology, which is called "Record in Context" (RIC), is being developed by the ICA Experts Group on Archival Description (EGAD). For developing the new archival standard, ICA EGAD has referenced the archival standards of Australia, Spain, and Finland, as well as the FRBRoo integrated model of the museum and library fields and the legacy ICA's descriptive standards. This study, therefore, examined these international trends on the archival descriptive standards and derived a number of suggestions for improvement. As a result, descriptive standards are changing from the guidelines for the standardized archival description to the upper conceptual model and ontology for the flexible archival description and sharing of archival metadata. There is a need to adapt the change of the information environment and promote cooperation among cultural heritage institutions.

  • In the archival field, the last decade has witnessed much discussion on archives' broad responsibilities for social memory. Considering that the social role of archives has stemmed from postmodern thinking suggests a paradigm shift from viewing archives as static recorded objects to viewing them as dynamic evidence of human memory. The modern archives and archivists are products of nineteenth-century positivism, limiting their function to archiving written documents within stable organizations. The new thoughts on the social role of archives provide a chance to realize that traditional archival practices have preserved only a sliver of organizational memory, thus ignoring fluid records of human activities and memory. Archival description is the primary method for users to access materials in archives. Thus, it can determine how archival materials will be used (or not used). The traditional archival description works as the representation of archival materials and is directly projected from the hierarchy of organizational documents. This paper argues that archivists will need to redefine archival description to be more sensitive to atypical types of archival materials from various cultural contexts. This paper surveys the postmodern approaches to archival concepts in relation to descriptive practices. It also examines some issues related to representing historically marginalized groups in archival description who were previously neglected in traditional archival practices.

  • It is almost impossible to fulfill the users' information needs efficiently without any finding aids. The idiosyncrasy of archival materials had led the archivists to develop their own descriptive rules until the mid of 1980s. It was the arrival of computers and information networks that stimulated the archival community to standardize its variant descriptive practices. The primary purpose of the national and international archival description standards is to facilitate the cooperative archival data exchange. The Ad Hoc Commission on Descriptive Standards of the International Council on Archives adopted ISAD(G) and ISAAR(CPF) in 1993 and in 1995 respectively. ISAD(G) guides the formulation of information in each of 26 elements that may be combined to constitute the description of an archival entity. ISAAR(CPF) is to give general rules for the establishment of archival authority records in descriptions of archival documents. Histories, structures and fundamental principles of those two international archival standards have been studies in this article. Most of the present archival description standards are based on the principle of provenance and the authority model. The instability of modern organizations and the digitalization of record keeping systems have been making the archivists to review these basic archival principles. It is suggested that Korean archival community should attempt to draft a national archival descriptive standard suitable to the Korean archival practice and Korean language in the framework of the international standards.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest EAD mandatory elements to share finding aids among the Archival Institutions of Korea. Three foreign EAD best practices for case studies: the EAD Best Practice at the Library of Congress(2008), the RLG Best Practice Guidelines for Encoded Archival Description(2002), and the OAC Best Practice Guidelines for Encoded Archival Description (2005) were analyzed. In addition, the Archival Description Rules(2008) as the data content standard of Korea and the descriptive elements which are were being used at Archival Institutions of Korea were analyzed. Based upon the results of comparisons among EAD elements, in-depth interviews were performed to investigate which EAD elements should be included in finding aids as a matter of exchange format. Based upon the literature review, case studies, and interviews, the rules and EAD elements for the archival institutions in Korea were designed and suggested.

  • With the increase in private and community archives to record various different shapes and forms of societies, the establishment of archives for social minorities has heightened. In line with these changes, this study analyzed the Korean queer archives "Queerarch," which focus on records and archives on sexual minorities. This study examined the current status of the archives of Queerarch, and grasped the characteristics of the queer archives and the problems of archival description elements. The current archival description elements used in Queerarch do not fully reflect the characteristics of the queer archives and the multilayer description method. To solve these problems, this study proposed a metadata schema that includes archival description elements that are based on archival description standards such as the General International Standard Archival Description (ISAD (G)), Manual of Archival Description (MAD), Rules for Archival Description (RAD), and others.

But it does not be treated carefully as archival material also, it can not be found a study for the archival objects. Thus this study aims to suggest a description of the objects for management the objects appropriately. To derive a conclusion, this paper made a comparative by using the archival description of other nations such as General International Standard for Archival Description, Rules for Archival Description also refer to the cataloging rules which used for a long time to management materials at library such as Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, Korean Cataloging Rules. We divided the section into 7 area such as identity statement area, context area, content and structure area, condition of access and use area, allied material area, note area, and description control area for suggest a description for archival objects.
