  • This study covered the features and development process of the stylobate of the Sumijwa style, which emerged in Silla around the late 7th century. In the Period of North and South Dynasties, Sumijwa was used as the seat of the Buddha. It was used as a stylobate of tower in the Sui Dynasty and as a stylobate of central buildings in the Tang Dynasty, raising the status of buildings. In the late 7th century, Silla faithfully embodied Buddhist view of the world under its architecture by accepting the latest stylobate of the Sumijwa style. The pagoda of Hwangnyongsa Temple is believed to be the beginning of the stylobate of the Sumijwa style, in Silla. Gradually, in the central buildings within the capital, the stylobate of the Sumijwa style became common. Starting with Bulguksa Temple's Daeungjeon Hall, the materials of stylobate and staircaes will be integrated from the late 8th century. Silla's stylobate of the Sumijwa style can be evaluated as a step-by-step leap in religious, political, technical and aesthetic's terms.

  • The purpose of this study was to search the architectural forms including the residence plan and wooden structure and the measuring unit in building sites named Bang in Gyeong_Ju, the capiatal of Silla dynasty. It includes the following three historic sites: JaMaeJung-ji, the east district of HwangLyong-sa (S1E1) and InWang-dong historic site. Especially, the data from excavating and studying the east district of HwangLyong-sa were very precious and meaningful. The results were as follows: 1) There are individual characteristics at the sites of JaMaeJung-ji, the east district of HwangLyong-sa and InWang-dong. 2) It is assumed that the builldings of the east district of HwangLyong-sa had most various types of plan and various types of wooden structures. 3) There were various types of wooden structures like as symmetrical or asymmetrical style, regular columnar or irregular columnar style and a third purlin location or a forth purlin location. 4) This study also showed there's a high probability that buildings at Bang sites had been built by the Tang dynaty scale. In Silla dynasty, there was similar tendency to BackJe Dynasty in the way that measuring unit changed according to the times.

  • The purpose of this paper is to define the spatial scope and landscape structure of the capital city of Shilla Dynasty. We have tried to analyze the locational characteristics, the location and landscape form of the Yonggang-Dong pond site which was assumed a part of a king's place, and had the important implicitness in delineating the spatial scope of capital city of Shilla Dynasty. The research took the theory of landscape cognition as a tool, and processed with the book review related simultaneously. The results of study are as follows; 1) It has been almost conformed that the Yonggang-Dong Pond Site was a part of the North Palace of Shilla Dynasty, and it took the form of fully enclosed by the forest, such as the names of Imjungsu and Gosungsu, and so on. This fact has leaded to the special landscape form of 'Forest with Palace' that is an similar pattern of Forest with Tumulus, Forest having Well, Forest having Well, Forest having Mountain. Each of them is symbolizing the place of holiness in the Shilla Dynasty. 2) The Yonggang-Dong Pond site and its surrounding forests made them together be the north border of the Capital City of Shilla Dynasty. This fact made it possible to consider the form of landscape of the Najung Forest with Posugjung Pavilion as the same on which was on the southern border of the city. 3) The above mentioned facts lead to clues that the border of the capital city of Shilla Dynasty does mean that it was not the mere functional one, but symbolic one. Thus, this paper suggests that the spatial scope of the capital city of Shilla Dynasty should include not only the area of block system, but also the surrounding natural area of mountains, forests, and so on, including the artificial elements of palace and pavilion. 4) This type of borders with the natural elements show basically the different type and function. We could find out some examples from China's and Japan under the same block systems and in the same era. It should be more identifiable in the form and the meaning of landscape of the capital city of Silla Dynasty in ancient Korea.

  • In the study of Buddhist architecture before the Goryeo Dynasty, the analysis of sectarian viewpoints is one of the effective means. In the study of Buddhist architecture before the Goryeo Dynasty, analyzing from the point of view of a Buddhism sect is one of the effective means. Until now, compared to the importance of the Beopsang school before the Goryeo period in the field of research on the history of Buddhist architecture, research on its temples was the least compared to those of other denominations. In this study, as one of the studies on Beopsang school temples, Geumsansa(金山寺), Beopjusa(法住寺), and Donghwasa(桐華寺), which were built as the Jinpyo's Beopsang school temple in the late 8th century and maintained until the Goryeo Dynasty, were targeted. And I tried a rudimentary analysis on the building composition of those temples from the viewpoint of the beliefs and teachings of Beopsang school. This study is meaningful in that it is the first attempted study in the field of architectural history on the Buddhist temple of the Beopsang school, which led non-Zen sects of Buddhism along with the Hwaeom school until the Goryeo Dynasty.

  • In this study, it has compared and investigated the architecture of Six-Dynasty in China which was the same period of Baegje. There are no buildings to remain as a Baegje's architecture, but the architectural traces are remained. Especially, the architectural traces in Six-Dynasty are much left in cave temples. The reason to compare the architecture between China and Baegje intends to restore the Baegje's architectural style ultimately. The two countries, China and Baegje, were very close and they traded each other at that time. In the method of comparison, it has been investigated the form, the style and characteristics in each parts such as podium, column base, column, doors and windoors, brackets and roofs. As a result of the study, it has shown that the Baegje's architecture was not splendid compared to the architecture of Six-Dynasty. Baegje developed it's own architectural technique and used it only to the Baegje architecture. Since there was historical records that Baegje sent it's own architectural engineers to surrounding countries, Silla and Japan, it confirms that Baegje's architectural techniques were excellent. We need more time and constant research to restore the Baegje's architectural style ahead of time.

  • The Wolseong Wooden moat is a unique example. Which is a vertical wall made of wood. It shows a changing point how to make the wall by digging a hole and stacking stones vertically. This study tried to to make a assumption about the construction process of the wooden structure found in the Wolseong pit moat. I sorted out wooden elements and then analyzing these features and compared with the results of the excavation. After I made 3D modelling in the order to it was made. This moat is not only a function of digging up the ground to trap water, but also a technique of building structures to maintain walls. It is a valuable material that can show the woodworking engineering techniques of the Silla Dynasty.
