The Composite Structure Characteristics of the Formerly the Busan Branch of Toyo Takushoku Co.(Busan Modern History Museum) (구 동양척식주식회사 부산지점(부산근대역사관)의 복합구조 특성)

  • The Busan branch of the former Toyo Takushoku Co. carried out the same business as a bank at the time of construction. This required an open space of long-span, which had no pillars, on the first floor where many customers frequently visited. In addition, an office space is required in the upper part, and a column is arranged so as to place a corridor in the center. It was designed with modern complex structures for space utilization and structural adaptation. As a result, scientific structural calculations of the modern era began and various structural technologies were introduced, the rationalization and value of various spatial characteristics and their structural design were analyzed from a technical historical perspective in the structure requiring long-span space. The Busan branch of the former Toyo Takushoku Co. is a complex structure with three structures. It is highly valuable as a building that tried to design its structure in a variety of spaces through calculation and introduction of new technology based on the principle of force in modern times.

  • The modern day architectural giant, Maki Fumihiko, has lived through both the early and the more recent modernism, Contemporary. In the 1950's he was faithful to the spirit that was founded on the early modernity, Metabolism. In his later years in the 2000's, his style can be distinguished into Neo-Modernism which was based on local influence. The educational system at Washington University and the modern city of Saint Louis carries the continuation of Fumihiko Maki's early and later architectural career. Steinberg Hall and Kemper Art Museum have been built adjacent to each other in an extended period of time. These two projects encompass the changes in the era that has gone through modernism, transformation of an architect's career, and the maturation of the university. Steinberg Hall carries the ideal and the spirit of young Fumihiko Maki, therefore, the basic platform of experimentation of the early Metabolist has been applied. Spatial theory that concentrates on the integration of relations is also evident in this project. In contrast, Kemper Art Museum expresses the work of a 78 year-old veteran from the perspective of Neo-Modernism. This piece focuses on the internal space through the coexistence of a variety of space, and with that it notably interprets the integration of the pieces to the whole as a set theory. The partial change that we see is the evidence of the change in the early and the later modernism, while maintaining the innocence and the spirit of it. This is to highlight the fact that, ultimately, the goal of architecture is to secure the human race's honesty and their freedom expressed through space.

A Basic Study on the Vertical Circulation Elements in a Museum (박물관에 있어서의 수직동선 요소에 대한 기초적 연구)

  • The main purpose of this study is the vertical circulation elements(stairs, elevator, ramp) in a Museum. The first is numerically analyzed in the study. And museum of Korea was limited to the case. The result of the study can be summarized as follows. 1. 50% of cases have 3~4 vertical circulation elements.; (1) ~8 elements: 1(3%), (2) 7 elements: 2(5%), (3) 6 elements: 5(13%), (4) 5 elements: 6(16%), (5) 4 elements: 8(21%), (6) 3 elements: 11(29%), (7) 2 elements: 4(11%), (8) 1 element: 1(3%). 2. There was "stairs alone", "elevator + stairs", "elevator + stairs + ramp", "stairs + ramp" in museum of Korea. Cases of "elevator alone", "ramp alone", elevator + ramp", "stairs + elevator + ramp" was not.; (1) stairs alone: 8(21%), (2) elevator + stairs: 21(55%), (3) elevator + stairs + ramp: 8(21%), (4) stairs + ramp: 1(3%).

A Comparative Study of the Expantionist Architectural Concept in Post-Modern Museums -focused on Neue Staatsgalerie Stuttgart and Stadtisches Museum Abteiberg Monchengladback in Germany- (포스트모던 미술관 건축의 확장된 건축개념에 관한비교연구 -독일 스튜트가르트 국립미술관 신관과 묀헨글라드바하 시립미술관을 중심으로-)

  • During the boom of museum building in the 1970s-80s two museum wee erected in Germany. They are James Stirling's Neue Stattsgalerie Stuttgart and hans Hollein's Stadtisches Museum Abteiberg Monchengladbach, These two museums share the folowing point of similarity : Stirling's Neue Stattsgalerie Stuttgart and Hollein's Staditisches Museum Abetiberg Monchenbladbach both manifest the conditions of the times in light of their respective cities' local characters and historical contexts without being bound to traditional formality. Stirling and Hollein attempted to grasp the meaning of the 기nuseum as a city in miniature." Taking into account the t two museums’s territorial characteristics of being situated on a slope, both Stirling and Hollein made the walker to pass t through their building complex and introduced the concept of a public square within them. As a result, the museums are not j just two large buildings but are architecture composed of a collage of various structures. S Stirling’s architecture employs the method of attaching additional elements on top of basic constituents, which is suggestive '||'&'||'#61551; of the historical fragment from Shinkel's Altes Museum. On the other hand, Hollein applies a collage-style method as if he w were doing urban planning, maintaining the distinctiveness of each of the various forms and materials of buildings. T The object style buildings of the two museums actively demonstrate the contrast of double meaning to represent the a ambiguous and multifarious characteristics of the modern times. Stirling explores the theme of opposition and coexistence in h his Neue Stattsgalerie Stuttgart by placing a series of opposing concepts, such as the past and present and histor${\gamma}$ and t technology, in one space. Thereby, the contradiction and its appeal are manifested. Hollein made use of the visual illusion and c contradiction in alluding to the irony of the modern reality induced by nature and culture and history and technology. F For the above reasons and methods, James Stirling ’ s Neue Stattsgalerie Stuttgart allowed the penetration of art into daily l life and became the general public’s favored museum for its free and unrestrained environment. A study of convergence correlation between freeform architecture classification of museum and exhibition space -Focus on the Netherlands, Germany and Singapore- (박물관의 비정형건축형태분류와 전시공간과의 융합상관성 고찰 - 네덜란드, 독일, 싱가포르를 중심으로 -)

  • Today, there have been more museums with architectural freeform structure. From an academic perspective, that caused a change in the paradigm of the genealogy of architectural forms. Accordingly, it has been required to find whether the freeform architecture influences an exhibition space. Therefore, in order to analyze the correlation between freeform architecture and exhibition space, this study looks into the tendency of actual freeform architecture through case analysis after 2000. An exhibition space of museum serves as a socially, culturally, and locally symbolic icon and has the function of delivering information to viewers through the aesthetic presentation of articles on exhibition. This study is meaningful in the point that it drew the conclusion of the correlation between freeform architecture and exhibition space in order to infer that a freeform exhibition space is more effective at viewers' spatial experience. The method and results of this study are presented as follows: Firstly, literature survey on the concept of the freerform architecture of museum and the classification of architectural forms was conducted and previous studies were analyzed in order to establish criteria. Secondly, a case study was conducted through visits to Singapore, Germany, and the Netherlands in order to look into the current state and characteristics of freeform architecture and exhibition space. In this case, Karel Vollers' architectural freeform criteria were used for analysis. Thirdly, to prove the correlation between freeform architecture and exhibition space, each case was cross-checked on the basis of Karel Vollers' architectural freeform criteria and freeform exhibition classification, and then results were drawn. The study results are presented as follows: Firstly, EX(angle, ortho) of freeform architecture had a significant correlation with the diagonal form of exhibition space. That was proved 92.3% accurately more in the Netherlands and Germany than in Singapore. However, the curve form of exhibition space had a unclear correlation. In Singapore case, the curve form correlation was made through RO, FR, and TW. Secondly, freeform architecture had complex-typed combination with the diagonal and curve forms of exhibition space. In particular, N-02 and G-02 had a combination form, basically EX, and partially various forms so as to induce the complexity of free form. As such, architectural freeform makes it possible to achieve infinite transformation in various combinations. For responses, combinational approaches are required in multilateral ways. Based on this study, it will be planned to analyze the correlation between freeform architecture of museum and exhibition presentation.

The Influence of Architecture on the Altes Museum in Designing the Pinakothek der Moderne (피나코텍 데 모데르네 설계과정에 나타난 알테스뮤지엄의 영향)

  • In the phase of an architectural designing, the Pinakothek der Modeme in Munich is considered that it is influenced by the Altes Museum in Berlin. The critical elements were composed of the classification of Tominaka and my points of view. Two buildings were analyzed for comparison by six elements, such as, a spatial construction, an organization of plan, an organization of section, a composition of elevation, a method of construction and a composition of mass. The results of the analysis were that the design of the Pinakothek der modeme was influenced by the Altes Museum as follows: 1)the use of square and circle in the composition of plan, 2)the use of a curtain of columns and a formation of the transitional space between columns and front wall, 3)the location and function of the main stairs and the inner court, 4)the arrangement of exhibition halls, 5)the covering of dome, 6)the unification of spaces of different floors through the rotunda. This study may be helpful for any architects who make a decision of the method and the range of reference to some other building in the beginning of design.

A Study on space organization of the SeongBo(聖寶)Museum's of The Buddhist Temple (사찰 성보박물관의 공간구성에 관한 연구)

  • It is a world wide tread for museums to become specialized museums emphasizing their characteristics, but Seongbo museums(museums that preserve Buddhist artifacts) are more general and show no specialization or characterization. The purpose of this study is to emphasize the special character of the Seongbo museum which manages and maintains sacred Buddhist cultural artifacts, and to understand the architectural characteristics of the building distribution and interior composition to implement a more systematic spatial composition plan. For our analysis we selected 6 currently operating museums as our subjects, and analyzed the characteristics of their spatial composition through their plans including the plot plans and ground plans. As a result, we found that most of them were small scale museums, and that the character and rank of each building changed according to its positioning. In terms of areas, the museums consisted of exhibition areas, storage areas, maintenance areas, and other miscellaneous areas and were lacking areas for research and education. It is necessary for these museums to possess facilities for managing these cultural artifacts as well as adequate exhibition and storage spaces. Seongbo museums, which are connected with Buddhist temples, must possess differentiated preservation and maintenance methods unlike museums dealing with artifacts that need only be preserved, and must have an area plan suitable to the characteristics of the various artifacts near and around the temple so as to help build our Buddhist cultural heritage in a systematic and continuous matter.

  • When the past architecture is renovated, the important point is to approach from social and historical point of view. In Europe, there are many cultural and architectural hereditaments by backed-up ancient history and are usually happened modernistic applications of these architectures. Specially, when the past architecture is renovated, this study is focused on cases of museum and gallery which the people are approachable by me.   • This study analyzed characteristics of visual circulation in the modern museum architecture while carrying out space syntax and visibility graph analysis side by side in order to solve problems of visitors' movement having been suggested as the point at issue at modern museum architecture that has become big scaled and layering so as to satisfy various social demands. Also, the result of this analysis is same as followings. First, visitors become to watch the exhibition with clear position that can make themselves in right allocation, and thus visual and perceptual confusions were shown as relatively low in case physical position and visual one were matched at major space of atrium type or mediation space. Second, it was appeared a lot at the museum having exhibition space of room type in case the physical position and visual one were not matched. Visual circulation in the exhibition space of room type has a merit of forming the circulation where free selection is possible. However, it have raised concerns that visual passageway of visitors could be in a stalemate or crash at the opening part, not at the exhibition hall. Third, though analysis of space syntax had a merit of analyzing total modern museum architectures having became compounded and big scaled, but it was dropped in reliability from the visual circulation's analysis that was decided by flows of space and time. In contrary, visibility graph analysis was shown as having a merit to analyzing the flows rather than that of total structure, and also appeared as being able to supplement the disadvantage of space syntax in methodology. Upon the above analysis, a lot of architectural elements such as allocation of exhibition hall, location of door and window etc. were appeared as affecting influences to forming visual circulation of visitors, not to mention of allocations of major space, mediation space, and exhibition one. Through this study, various possibilities of quantitative analysis on the visual circulation in the museum architectures can be confirmed. However, this study expects that in-depth subsequent researches objecting to various museums could be realized afterwards because there are still limitations in its analysis.
