  • Objective: The aim of this study is to analyze the effect of the strength of the ankle support on the walking characteristics and ankle joints when men with flexible flat feet walk. Method: 13 adult male subjects (age: 23.9 ± 2.4 yrs, height: 173.0 ± 5.0 cm, weight: 76.9 ± 13.2 kg, Navicular Drop Test (NDT): 10.2 ± 0.8 mm) participated in this study. Each participant had to walk with the 3 conditions, barefoot, soft arch support and hard arch support, along a walkway while their kinematics was recorded at 100 Hz. Results: Based on the results of this study, it is considered that men with flexible flat feet should use hard arch support rather than bare feet to induce normal arch shape, relieve foot damage caused by excessive ankle joint abnormalities and improve stability. Conclusion: Our results for men with flat flexibility, there was a significant difference in the value of step length when walking was performed using two arch supports with different strengths. The angle of ankle dorsiflexion was significantly increased, and the ankle eversion angle was significantly decreased.

  • The dynamic behavior of spatial structures is different depending on the aspect ration of arch structure, as the rise-span ratio or open-angle, and these spatial structures show differently the character of seismic response in accordance with stiffness and connection of the lower support structures that are directly influenced by earthquake. Therefore, in this paper, dynamic analysis is conducted for seismic response of single layer arch structures by the influence of column's stiffness and connection, to reflect the different vertical and horizontal vibration mode of single layer arch structures. The vertical response of single layer arch structures is more influence by lower columns and the influence of column's connection rotational stiffness is not large, except to the hinged connections.

  • Steel arch supports are used in mines and underground structures to provide stability. Most of the supports are made up of overlapping arches. They can behave either yieldingly or unyieldingly. If the normal force at any point of overlapping equals the slip resistance, the slide occurs. This paper presents a solution procedure for determining the load-carrying capacity of steel arch supports in the yielding implementation. This solution considers the effects of several significant elements, including differing materials and the number of clamps in yielding friction joints. The direct stiffness method is applied. The solution contains geometric, physical, and structural nonlinearity. The results obtained from numerical modeling using the provided procedure are compared to laboratory tests conducted at GIG Katowice in 2012. They show a good correlation with previously collected data from equivalent laboratory conditions.

  • Spatial structures have the different dynamic characteristics from general rahmen structures and many studies on dynamic behavior of it is conducted. But most studies was conducted about the particular shape of spatial structures and, directly, the usable results of studies are very limited for seismic design of spatial structures with the lower structure. So, this study is conducted about the truss arch structure that the basic dynamic characteristics of spatial structure is inherent in, and the change of its seismic response is analyzed when columns have different length on both ends of it. According to the difference of column's length on both ends, the vertical acceleration response of truss arch structure is affected more than the horizontal acceleration response of it. Therefore, when the stiffness of lower structures that support the upper structure is different, the consideration of the vertical response is significantly required for the seismic design of spatial structures.

  • The differential equations governing free, in-plane vibrations of linearly elastic circular arches with rotationally flexible supports, including the effects of rotatory inertia, shear deformation and axial deformation, are solved numerically using the corresponding boundary conditions. The lowest four natural frequencies and the corresponding mode shapes are obtained over a range of non-dimensional system parameters: the subtended angle, the slenderness ratio, and the rotational spring stiffness.
