In this paper, A circular arc crackered plate in biaxially stretched sheets was investigated in the boundary element method. The applications of fracture mechanics have traditionally concentrated on crack problems under an mode I, straight crack. However, many service failures occur from growth of cracks subjected to mixed mode loadings. A rectangular plate with arc crack or slanted central crack, under biaxial tensile loading, was treated analytically and also solved numerically. The Results from BEM applying different loading conditions, crack length (a/W), arc angle($\alpha$) are presented and discussed. The stress intensity factors are evaluated by the techniques of the J-integral. The decomposition method, used to decouple the stress intensity factors in mixed mode problems, is implemented by a considering a small circular contour path around each crack tip. The BIE method was successfully applied to a circular arc crackerd plate problem, also slanted centre cracked plate under mixed mode.
The reliable stress intensity factor analysis is required for fracture mechanics design or safety evaluation of mechanical joints at which cracks often initiate and grow. It has been reported that cracks in mechanical joints usually nucleate as corner cracks at the faying surface of joints and grow as elliptical arc through cracks. In this paper, three dimensional finite element analyses are performed for elliptical arc through cracks in mechanical joints. Thereafter stress intensity factors along elliptical crack front including two surface points are determined by the virtual crack closure technique. Virtual crack closure technique is a method to calculate stress intensity factor using the finite element analysis and can be applied to non-orthogonal mesh. As a result, the effects of clearance on the stress intensity factor are investigated and crack shape are then predicted.
Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW) is a common practice to join thick plates such as the structural members of large scale offshore structures and very large container ships. The objective of this study was to investigate the mechanical properties and variability of the fatigue crack initiation life in the flux cored arc welded API 2W Gr.50 steel joints typically applied to offshore structures with a focus on the effect of the materials in fatigue crack growth life from the notch root of a compact tension specimen. Offshore structural steel (API 2W Gr.50) plates (60-mm thick) were used to fabricate multi-path flux core arc welded butt welded joints to clearly consider fatigue fractures at the weld zone from the notch. Fatigue tests were performed under a constant amplitude cyclic loading of R = 0.4. The mean fatigue crack initiation life of the HAZ specimen was the highest among the base metal (BM), weld metal (WM), and heat affected zone (HAZ). In addition, the coefficient of variation was the highest in the WMl specimen. The variability of the short fatigue crack growth rates from the notch tips in the WM and HAZ specimens was higher than in BM.

The size of container ships is increasing to increase the cargo loading capacity. However, container ships are limited in terms of the hull longitudinal strength. To overcome this limitation, brittle crack arrest steel can be used. This study was aimed at examining the influence of the heat input on the welding procedures of flux cored arc welding and submerged arc welding. In the experiment, the crack tip opening displacement test, which pertains to a parameter of fracture mechanics, was performed, and a 3-point bending tester was adopted. Based on the results, the crack measurement method was presented, and the stress expansion coefficient value for the pre-fatigue crack length was derived according to the heat input after the pre-cracking length was measured. It was noted that the heat input affected the crack tip opening displacement of brittle crack arrest steel.
The stress distribution in the vicinity of the crack tip in the fracture mechanics is ordenarily indicated by the stress intensity factor. In the analysis of stress intensity factors, there are many theoretical and experimental methods. The stress analysis in photoelastic technique is usually made by using the difference of the principal stress of isochromatic fringe patterns. In this paper, the teflon molding technique is adopted to make a test specimen with a circular arc-crack, and that upgraded the accuracy of experiment. As the result, the experimental values of the stress intensity factors for the circular disk with a straight crack are coincided with the theoretical values. But, there is quite a difference between this expermental results on the finite plate for circular arc-crack and its theoretical values on the infinite one. Therefore, a boundary condition with regard to the loading condition on finite disk must be considered.

An interface of a circular arc formed by two isotropic, homogeneous elastic materials is investigated. It is shown that L integral satisfies the conservation law for the interface if it is perfectly bonded, in frictionless contact or separated such as in a crack with the origin of the coordinate system being located at the center of the circular arc. The property of path independence of the L integral is applied to an interfacial crack problem, to obtain the stress intensity factors, where the interfacial crack is located along the arc of the circular inclusion embedded in infinite matrix. It is assumed here that the contact zone exist as in the model proposed by Comninou, thus removing the overlapping of the materials along the interface. Another example is shown for case of a circular interfacial crack in the matrix of finite size, where the stress intensity factors are determined by computing a value of the L integral numerically along the path far from the crack tip.

Cracks at mechanical fastener holes usually nucleate as elliptical comer cracks at the faying surface of the mechanical joints and grow as elliptical arc through cracks. The weight function method for elliptical arc through cracks at mechanical fastener holes has been developed and verified in the part I of this study. In part H, applying the weight function method, the effects of the amount of clearance on the mixed-mode stress intensity (actors are investigated and the change of crack shape is predicted from the analysis for various crack shapes. The stress intensity factors leer inclined crack are analyzed and critical angle at which mode I stress intensity factor becomes maximum is determined.
Many pressure vessels for the power plants are fabricated from low alloy ferritic steels. The inner sides of the pressure vessels are commonly weld_cladded with austenitic stainless steels to minimize problems of corrosive attack. The submerged-arc welding(SAW) process is now used in preference to other processes because of the possibilities open to automation to reduce the overaII welding times. The most reliable way to avoid underclad cracks(UCC) which are often detected at the overlap of the clad beads is to use nonsusceptible steels such as SA508 class 3. At present domestically developed forging steel of SA508 cl.S is now being cladded with single layer by using 90mm wide strip, which transfers higher heat input into the base metal compared to the conventional two layers strip cladding which has been in wide use with 30-60 mm wide strip. But the current indices for the influence of heat input on crack susceptibility are not accurate enough to express the subtle difference in crack susceptibility of the steel. Therefore, the purpose of this present study is: l) To determine UCC susceptibility on domestic forging steel, SA508 cl.S cladded with single layer by using submerged arc 90mm strip and, 2) To optimize heat input range by which the crack susceptibility could be eliminated.

The overlay welding the automobile where the durability is demanded, it is used in the vessel engine valve, plant valve and pump parts. Cause of damage public opinion one what is thought is the fatigue load due to the opening and shutting operation right time repetition of the engine valve. The damage cause of the engine valve or explanation of destruction mechanism is very difficult. The research which it sees to make clear a overlay welding of Co-alloy by Plasma Transferred Arc Weld Surfacing Process reconsideration fatigue crack initiation and fatigue crack growth mechanism at high temperature.

A study was performed to determine the optimum height for an arc air gouging of temporary attachments, which were attached at the pressure vessel made of low alloy steel. Frequently, the crack occurred in the base metal by the excessive heat input during an arc air gouging process to remove the temporary attachments. A numerical analysis by 2-dimensional finite element method was performed to calculate the temperature distribution in the base metal during the removal of temporary attachments. And then the mock-up test was performed to verify the numerical results. Numerical values showed good agreement with the experimental results. These results indicated that the defects due to the excessive heat input during an arc air gouging were dependent on the height of temporary attachments remained above hie main products.
