Prediction of Anode Temperatures of Free Burning Arcs Using a Simplified Unified Model

  • Free burning arcs where the work piece acts as an anode are frequently used for a number of applications. Our investigation is exclusively concerned with a simplified unified model of arcs and anode under steady state conditions at atmospheric pressure. The model is used to make predictions of arc and anode temperatures and arc voltage for a 200 A arc in argon. The computed temperatures along the axis between the cathode tip and the anode surface compare well the measured data. This knowledge of free burning arcfeatures can play a role in developing the atmospheric plasma systems, however, further investigation should include the modelling of Cu evaporation from anode and non-LTE situation near electrodes for more realistic calculations.

  • The arc characteristics have influences on the current interruption phenomena in the regimes of low current as well as high current. It is very important to understand the arc characteristics for the initial design of a circuit breaker. This article describes the theoretical analysis of the arc characteristics by means of arc energy integral method when convection dominated low current arcs are produced in the dual-nozzle air and $SF_6$ gas flows of a model interrupter. The arc radius, average electric field strength and arc voltage have been investigated at the current range of 60 to 230 A and at the upstream pressure of 0.6 MPa in both air and SF6 gas. The results have been compared to show the difference of both gases and the trends similar to those of other investigations.

  • Electric arc furnaces (EAFs) are a main cause of voltage flicker due to the interaction of the high demand currents of the load with the supply system impedance. The stochastic models have described the physical phenomena of EAFs. An alternative approach is to include deterministic chaos in the characterization of the arc currents. In this paper, a chaotic approach to such modeling is described and justified. At the same time, a DLL (Dynamic Link Library) module, which is a FORTRAN interface with TACS (Transient Analysis of Control Systems), is developed to implement the chaotic load model in the Electromagnetic Transients Program (EMTP). The details of the module and the results of tests performed on the module to verify the model and to illustrate its capabilities are presented in this paper.

  • The spherical bead manufactured by rapidly cooling process shows high density of 3.64g/㎤, high unit volume weight of 2.6kg/l, and high solid volume of 71%. When it applies to the grouter, it is possible to obtain even high fluidity with only a small amount. This study, focusing the grouter using a rapidly-cooled electric arc furnace oxidizing slag(RC-EAFS), deals with the properties of flow and setting time in fresh state, compressive strength and length variation at 1, 3, 7 and 28 curing day in hardened state. As the results, even though the grouter with RC-EAFS shows comparative low strength, it will be possible to development the competitive product due to the properties of increasing flow and low cost.

  • An arc/spark detector (ASD) was developed is to early detect wire failures and insecure connections that may lead to fire in residents and commercial and industrial facilities. A detailed circuit design for ASD implementation along with prototype product is reported. The tests of ASD, which were successful in phase identification, in many different arc/spark locations under different loadings, and in false alarm probability, showed the ability and capability of the state-of-the-art detector in the electric fire hazard prevention.

  • The present model of a SF6 arc accounts for the copper vapour contamination from the electrodes inside a Laval nozzle of a circuit breaker. Steady state simulations have been done for the arc with electrode gap of 60mm and DC electric current of 500A, 1000A and 1500A for both cases with and without copper contamination. The effects of electrode polarity are considered for the arc current of 1000A. It was found out that evaporation of copper from the anode results in a cooling of the arc in a region close to the electrodes. The electrical potential across the electrodes is not sensitive to the presence of copper vapour, typically less than $4\%$ difference. Transient analysis has been done in order to obtain the arc properties at current zero. The arc current is increased linearly from -1000 to 0A when the upstream electrode is cathode with constant dI/dt of $27.0A/{\mu}s$ (or decreased linearly from 1000 to 0A when upstream electrode is anode). It has been predicted that the presence of copper vapour reduces the interruption capability of the breaker.

  • In the existing deterministic network, the capacity of each arc has determined property. But actually, it may be a property which cannot be determined. Even though it should be determining, it contains many errors. In treating these kinds of problems, fuzzy theory is suitable. Recently, due to development the study on complicated and indefinited systems which contain fuzziness could be possible. This paper includes that the capacity of each arc and the goal quantity with nonnegative integer have the fuzziness. The object is to search the new mathod of fuzzy maximal flow quantity. If the degree of arc membership function of the minimal cut part is not larger than that of arc membership function of the part except the minimal cut, first calcurate nonfuzzy maximal flow quantity, and then can compute the optimal quantity the 3rd step at one time with Max-Min fuzzy operating in the arc capacity of minimal cut and the goal quantity without a great number of recalculation.

  • This parer presents the analysis of hot gas flow in puffer-type circuit breakers using FVFLIC method. For the analysis of arc-flow interaction, the flow field is analyzed from the equations of conservation for mass, momentum and energy with the assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium state. The arc is represented as the energy source term composed of ohmic heating and radiation term in the energy conservation equation. Ohmic heating is computed by the electric field analysis only within the conducting plasma region. An approximate radiation transport model is employed for the evaluation of emission and absorption of the radiation. The analysis method was applied to the real circuit breaker model and simulation results such as pressure rise and arc voltage were compared with the experimental ones.

  • Axial magnetic field was applied into the hollow anode of plasma torch for the purpose of extension of electrode lifetime. The average arc voltage increased because the arc column became longer, the arc voltage ripple frequency became low. The steady state of arc voltage was removed by applied magnetic filed. The lifetime of electrode was 60 times longer than operation without magnetic field.
