  • Main cable configurations under final dead load and in the unloaded state and critical construction parameters (e.g. unstrained cable length, unstrained hanger lengths, and pre-offsets for tower saddles and splay saddles) are the core considerations in the design and construction control of a suspension bridge. For the purpose of accurate calculations, it is necessary to take into account the effects of cable strands over the anchor spans, arc-shaped saddle top, and tower top pre-uplift. In this paper, a method for calculating the cable configuration under final dead load over a main span, two side spans, and two anchor spans, coordinates of tangent points, and unstrained cable length are firstly developed using conditions for mechanical equilibrium and geometric relationships. Hanger tensile forces and unstrained hanger lengths are calculated by iteratively solving the equations governing hanger tensile forces and the cable configuration, which gives careful consideration to the effect of hanger weight. Next, equations for calculating the cable configuration in the unloaded state and pre-offsets of saddles are derived from the cable configuration under final dead load and the conditions for unstrained cable length to be conserved. The equations for the main span, two side spans and two anchor spans are then solved simultaneously. In the proposed methods, coupled nonlinear equations are solved by turning them into an unconstrained optimization problem, making the procedure simplified. The feasibility and validity of the proposed methods are demonstrated through a numerical example.

  • Mean annual soil loss was calculated and critical soil erosion areas were identified for the Congaree River Basin in South Carolina, USA using the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) model. In the RUSLE model, the mean annual soil loss (A) can be calculated by multiplying rainfall-runoff erosivity (R), soil erodibility (K), slope length and steepness (LS), crop-management (C), and support practice (P) factors. The critical soil erosion areas can be identified as the areas with soil loss amounts (A) greater than the soil loss tolerance (T) factor More than 10% of the total area was identified as a critical soil erosion area. Among seven subwatersheds within the Congaree River Basin, the urban areas of the Congaree Creek and the Gills Creek subwatersheds as well as the agricultural area of the Cedar Creek subwatershed appeared to be exposed to the risk of severe soil loss. As a prototype model for examining future effect of human and/or nature-induced changes on soil erosion, the RUSLE model customized for the area was embedded into ESRI ArcGIS ArcMap 9.0 using Visual Basic for Applications. Using the embedded model, users can modify C, LS, and P-factor values for each subwatershed by changing conditions such as land cover, canopy type, ground cover type, slope, type of agriculture, and agricultural practice types. The result mean annual soil loss and critical soil erosion areas can be compared to the ones with existing conditions and used for further soil loss management for the area.

  • A CAD design drawing based on vector data that is very important art work in industrial fields has been considered to content that the copyright protection is urgently needed. This paper presents a watermarking scheme based on k-means++ for CAD design drawing. One CAD design drawing consists of several layers and each layer consists of various geometric objects such as LINE, POLYLINE, CIRCLE, ARC, 3DFACE and POLYGON. POLYLINE with LINE, 3DFACE and ARC that are fundamental objects make up the majority in CAD design drawing. Therefore, the proposed scheme selects the target object with high distribution among POLYLINE, 3DFACE and ARC objects in CAD design drawing and then selects layers that include the most target object. Then we cluster the target objects in the selected layers by using k-means++ and embed the watermark into the geometric distribution of each group. The geometric distribution is the normalized length distribution in POLYLINE object, the normalized area distribution in 3DFACE object and the angle distribution in ARC object. Experimental results verified that the proposed scheme has the robustness against file format converting, layer attack as well as various geometric editing provided in CAD editing tools.

  • A shock wave, being an irreversible process, gives rise to entropy increase. A great deal of effort has been made to control shock wave and boundary layer interaction related to energy losses as well as problems of vibration and noise. In the present study, tests are performed on a roof mounted half circular arc in an indraft type supersonic wind tunnel to evaluate the effects of porosity, length and depth of cavity in passive control of shock wave on the attenuation of shock strength by reviewing the measured static pressures at the porous wall and cavity. Also the flow field is visualized by a Schlieren system. The results show that in the present study the porosity of 8% produced the largest reduction of pressure fluctuations and that for the same porosity, the strength of shock wave decreases with the increasings of the depth and length of cavity.

  • The pure Ti is taken annealing process for one hour at 90$0^{\circ}C$. The pure Ti is sufficient for ASTM B348 Grade2. The rolling mill roll the Ti-8Ta-3Nb(wt%) which became vacuum melting in arc furnace until the length is about 45mm and the thickness is about 6.05mm. Then it is made 6mm$\times$6mm$\times$44mm by wire cutting with EDM and it is made ∮ 6mm by rough cutting with the general purpose lathe. The machining accuracy of implant parts in the dental and medical science are decided by dimension, shpe, straightness, surface roughness. It is difficult to cut for the Ti alloy. It is caused problems of straight degree and surface roughness to the Ti alloy have many cases which length is smaller than diameter in cutting. Total 24 specimens different kind of 4 alloies are used in experiment to gain a cutting property. According to the cutting velocity, cutting depth, cutting temperature, feed and clearance angle experiments are performed. Conclusively it is expected that cutting depth of 0.5mm, feed velocity of 0.07mm/rev and cutting velocity of 80m/min could make a suitable result.

  • This paper presents a new algorithm for the K shortest paths problem in a network. After a shortest path is produced with Dijkstra algorithm. detouring paths through inward arcs to every vertex of the shortest path are generated. A length of a detouring path is the sum of both the length of the inward arc and the difference between the shortest distance from the origin to the head vertex and that to the tail vertex. K-1 shorter paths are selected among the detouring paths and put into the set of K paths. Then detouring paths through inward arcs to every vertex of the second shortest path are generated. If there is a shorter path than the current Kth path in the set. this path is placed in the set and the Kth path is removed from the set, and the paths in the set is rearranged in the ascending order of lengths. This procedure of generating the detouring paths and rearranging the set is repeated until the $K^{th}-1$ path of the set is obtained. The computational results for networks with about 1,000,000 nodes and 2,700,000 arcs show that this algorithm can be applied to a problem of generating the detouring paths in the metropolitan traffic networks.

  • Angle sensors based on the principle of autocollimation, which are usually called autocollimators, can accurately measure small tilt angles of a light-reflecting flat surface. This paper describes a prototype micro-angle sensor that is based on the laser autocollimation technique. The new angle sensor is compact and consists of a laser diode as the light source and a quadrant photodiode as a position-sensing device. Because of its concise design, the microangle sensor facilitates dynamic measurements of the angular error motions of a precision stage without influencing the original dynamic properties of the stage. This is because the sensor only requires a small extra target mirror to be mounted on the stage. The sensitivity of the angle detection is independent of the focal length of the objective lens; therefore, an objective lens with a relatively short focal length is employed to reduce the size of the device. The micro-angle sensor uses a single lens for the both the laser collimation and focusing, which distinguishes it from the conventional laser autocollimation method that has separate collimate and objective lenses. The new micro-angle sensor has dimensions of $15.1\times22.0\times14.0mm$ and its resolution is better than 0.1 arc-second The optical design and performance of this micro-angle sensor were verified by experimental results.

  • This study is about occurrence pattern of vacant spaces as a urban decline indicator to consider a decline of old hillside residential area from spatial structure perspective. For investigation based upon vacant space and the street structure, this study selects Ami Chojang-dong in Seo-gu, Busan, of which 79.7% of total area is over a gradient of $10^{\circ}$. Focused on relationship between occurrence pattern of vacant spaces and 'vertical alleys(link)' serving as main movement path of local residents in hillside residential area, the length, numbers, slopes, and use characteristic of vertical alleys were analyzed using Arc GIS 9.3 program to classify characteristic zone types of spacial structure in hillside residential area. After the occurrence pattern of vacant space are interpreted in relation with building density, vertical alleys' number length slope, the social and economic issues have been considered as well. After analyzing the occurrence pattern of vacant space, this study argues that the occurrence pattern of vacant space in old hillside residential area is rather affected by street structure system consisting of vertical alleys than the impacts of social economical issues.
