  • Natural and expandable graphites were chemically treated in acidic aqueous solutions such as acetic acid or mixtures of acetic acid and nitric acid. Structures and thermal conductivities of the as-treated graphites were characterized in detail. Both graphites were significantly oxidized in the mixed acidic solution of $H_2SO_4$ and $HNO_3$, which condition was generally used for the oxidation of carbon nanotubes. This considerable oxidation of graphites caused a depression of their thermal conductivity. The structural characteristics, obtained by XRD and XPS, show that the graphites treated in the relatively weak acidic conditions (acetic acid or mixture of acetic acid and nitric acid) were quite similar to the untreated graphites. However, the thermal conductivities of both acidic-treated graphites were remarkably increased.

  • Zerovalent iron (ZVI) is one of the most commonly used metallic reducing agents for the treatment of toxic contaminants in wastewater. Traditional ZVIs are less effective than nanoscale ZVI (nZVI) due to prolonged reaction time. However, the reactivity can be significantly increased by reducing the size of ZVI particles to nanoscale. In this study, nZVI particles were synthesized under laboratory condition and their efficiency in removing hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from aqueous solutions were compared with commercially available ZVI particles. The results showed that the synthesized nZVI particles (SnZVI) reduced >99% of Cr(VI) at the application rate of 0.2% (w/v), while commercial nZVI (CnZVI) particles resulted in 59.6% removal of Cr(VI) at the same application rate. Scanning electron micrographs (SEM) and energy dispersive spectra (EDS) of the nZVI particles revealed the formation of Fe-Cr hydroxide complex after reaction. Overall, the SnZVI particles can be used in treating chromium contaminated wastewater.

  • This paper presents the optimization process of liquid desiccant cooling system using LiCl aqueous solution as a working fluid. Operating conditions(mass flow rate, conditioner outlet concentration, difference concentration) and design factors for heat exchangers(difference temperature of the district heating water, leaving temperature difference of the conditioner, leaving temperature difference of the regenerator, air temperature difference of the conditioner, air temperature difference of the regenerator) were optimized by response surface method. As a result, we obtained the 7.297 kW of cooling capacity and 0.788 of COP at optimized condition. Effect of difference temperature of hot water on system performances was also examined. As difference temperature of the district heating water increases, the cooling capacity increases and COP decreases.

  • We report the synthesis of $SrTiO_3$, $BaTiO_3$ and $Ba_xSr_{1-x}TiO_3$ (BST) nanoparticles (NPs) in various compositions (x = 0.25, 0.5 and 0.75) by an inorganic sol-gel method under a basic condition. Highly crystalline nanoparticles were formed at the reaction temperature of 25 - $100^{\circ}C$ from a stabilized titanium alkoxide in tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) and barium or strontium acetate in aqueous solution. Morphology and particle structure of the synthesized BST NPs were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The BST nanoparticles in various compositions were monodispersed without mutual aggregation, and their average sizes were in the range of 70 - 80 nm. Furthermore, they showed highly crystallized perovskite phase over the whole composition range from $SrTiO_3$ to $BaTiO_3$. We also proposed a mechanism for the low-temperature formation of BST NPs.

  • Chelating solutions can be damaged by strong acids during oil production. To design effective corrosion inhibitors and other alternatives for corrosion control, it is important to understand not only the behavior of the system under operating condition but also the kinetics of electrochemical reactions during the corrosion process. In this study, the electrochemical behaviors of P-110 steel in aqueous fluids based on ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) compounds under various temperatures and hydrodynamic regime conditions were assessed. Electrochemical measurements were conducted using rotating disc electrodes manufactured. Electrolytes were prepared using aqueous compounds of EDTA like diammonium salt, disodium salt, and tetrasodium salt. Potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance, and mass loss tests were performed in order to assess the corrosion kinetic in electrolytes. Hydrodynamic effects were observed only in the cathodic polarization curve. This proves that hydrodynamic regime plays an important role in the corrosion of steel mainly in disodium and diammonium EDTA solutions. Two cathodic reactions controlled the corrosion process. However, oxygen level and pH of the electrolyte played the most important role in metal corrosion. Corrosion rates in those fluids were decreased drastically when oxygen concentration was reduced.

  • Methane hydrate is formed by physical binding between water molecules and methane gas, which is captured in the cavities of water molecules under the specific temperature and pressure. $1m^3$ hydrate of pure methane can be decomposed to the methane gas of $172m^3$ and water of $0.8m^3$ at standard condition. Therefore, there are a lot of practical applications such as separation processes, natural gas storage transportation and carbon dioxide sequestration. For the industrial utilization of hydrate, it is very important to rapidly manufacture hydrate. So in this study, hydrate formation was experimented by adding THF and oxidized carbon nanotubes in distilled water, respectively. The results show that when the oxidized carbon nanofluids of 0.03 wt% was, the amount of gas consumed during the formation of methane hydrate was higher than that in the THF aqueous solution. Also, the oxidized carbon nanofluids decreased the hydrate formation time to a greater extent than the THF aqueous solution at the same subcooling temperature.

  • The effect of electrolyte on the extraction replicas of the precipiates in 3% Si steel was investigated. Three Kinds of electrolyte, 2% Nital solution (2% nitric acid+methanol; acid solution),, Sodium Citrate solution (5% sodiumcitrate+1% KBr+0.5KI+$H_{2}O$; aqueous neutral solution) and 10% AA solution (10% acetylacetone+ 1% tetramethylammoniumchloride+methanol; non-aqueous neutral solution), were compared. The preciptiates in 3% Si steel were dissolved in 2% Nital, but they were not dissolved in the Sodium Citrate and 10% AA solution. In Sodium Citrate solution, however, large second artifacts were introduced during sample preparation. Therefore 10% AA solution was found to be most useful for the preparation of extraction replica. The electrolysis condition of a matrix and precipitates were also checked by the measurement of potential-current curve in 10% AA solution. The matrix was electrolyzed at -400mV with respect to SCE(Saturated Calomel Electrode). In contrats precipitates were electrolyzed above 300mV. Precipitates were respected to be stable in 10% AA solution in the range of $-380mV{\sim}-300mV$ usually used to prepare extraction replicas.

  • Nano-sized iron particles were synthesized by reduction of $Fe^{3+}$ in aqueous solution under two reaction conditions, aerobic and anaerobic, and the reactivity of iron was tested by reaction with trichloroethene (TCE) using a batch system. Results showed that iron produced under anoxic condition for both synthesis and drying steps gave rise to iron with higher reduction reactivity, indicating the presence of oxygen is not favorable for production of nano-sized iron deemed to accomplish reactivity enhancement from particle sized reduction. Nano-sized iron sample obtained from the anoxic synthesis condition was further characterized using various instrumental measurements to identity particle morphology, composition, surface area, and particle size distribution. The scanning electron microscopic (SEM) image showed that synthesized particles were uniform, spherical particles (< 100 nm), and aggregated into various chain structures. The effects of other synthesis conditions such as solution pH, initial $Fe^{3+}$ concentration, and reductant injection rate on the reactivity of nano-sized iron, along with standardization of the synthesis protocol, are presented in the companion paper.

  • Oxidized-polyacrylonitrile (oxy-PAN) was prepared by oxidation of PAN fiber at $240^{\circ}C$, followed by base catalyzed hydrolysis reaction. The chemical structure of PAN fiber in various pH conditions was characterized by $^{13}C-NMR$ spectroscopy. The characteristic contraction and expansion behavior of oxy -PAN fiber was observed in acidic and basic medium, respectively. In basic condition, water molecules might be absorbed into the fiber with the movement of charge balancing $Na^+$ ion, on the other hand, the water molecules seemed to be expelled in acidic condition to result in contraction. It was also observed that the facile chemical modification occurred due to free diffusion of aqueous reagent into the hydrophilic PAN fiber, and the morphology was affected by pH condition.

  • This work investigated the plasma treatment of aqueous bisphenol A (BPA) solution and mineralization pathways. For the effective contact between plasmatic gas and aqueous BPA solution, the plasma was created inside a porous ceramic tube, which was uniformly dispersed into the aqueous solution through micro-pores of the ceramic tube. Effects of the gas flow rate, applied voltage and treatment time on the decomposition of BPA were examined, and analyses using ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopy, ion chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry were also performed to elucidate mineralization mechanisms. The appropriate gas flow rate was around $1.0L\;min^{-1}$; when the gas flow rate was too high or too low, the BPA decomposition performance at a given electric power decreased. The increase in the voltage improves the BPA decomposition due to the increased electric power, but the energy required to remove BPA was similar, regardless of the voltage. Under the condition of $1.0L\;min^{-1}$ and 20.8 kV, BPA at an initial concentration of $10L\;min^{-1}$ (volume : 1 L) was successfully treated within 30 min. The intermediates produced by the attack of ozone and hydroxyl radicals on BPA were further oxidized to stable compounds such as acetate, formate and oxalate.
