  • The effects of transport stocking density (500, 600 and 700 kg of olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus/per water tank) on the physicochemical characteristics of muscle were investigated. Transport of the animals took, on average, 10 days from Busan, Korea, to Long Beach, CA, USA. There was no significant difference in the breaking strength of muscle among the three groups. There was also no significant difference in the ATP, lactate, or glycogen content of muscle from the 500 and 600 kg/tank stocking density groups at the beginning and after transport. However, the ATP content decreased sharply while the lactate content increased in muscle from fish transported at a density of 700 kg/tank at the beginning of transport, and the ATP and lactate contents in this group were stable after transport.

  • Heterotrophic dinoflagellate Pfiesteria piscicida (Dinophyceae) has been claimed to produce potent ichthyotoxins that cause disorientation and eventually death of fish and other marine animals. A real-time PCR probe targeting for SSU rRNA gene was used for detection of P. piscicida in Chinhae Bay, Korea. PCR inhibitors were successfully removed by dilution of template DNA. Positive detections were shown from surface water samples indicating the presence of P. piscicida in Chinhae Bay.

  • Over the past decade, there has been global expansion in the advancement of underwater cleaning technology for ship hulls. This methodology ensures both diver safety and operational efficiency. However, recent attention has been drawn to the harmful effects of ship hull-cleaning wastewater on marine animals. It is anticipated that this wastewater may have various impacts on a wide range of organisms, potentially leading to populationand ecosystem-relevant alterations. This concern is especially significant when the wastewater affects functionally important species, such as aquaculture animals and habitat-forming species living in coastal regions, where underwater cleaning platforms are commonly established. Despite this, information on the ecotoxicological effects of this wastewater remains limited. In this mini review, we discuss the adverse effects of wastewater from in-water cleaning processes, as well as the current challenges and limitations in regulating and mitigating its potential toxicity. Overall, recent findings underscore the detrimental effects posed by sublethal levels of wastewater to the health status of aquatic animals under both acute and chronic exposure.

  • In order to develop a logical method for using selective fishing gear, the behaviour and habits of the aquatic animals must be investigated. However, until now, little national research has been carried out to investigate the behaviour and habits of the common octopus (Octopus minor). The purpose of this study henceforth, is to compile necessary behavioral data to develop fishing gear to catch the common octopus. Behaviour and habits of the common octopus were observed while breeding in a water tank from February to May, 2003. The feeding habits of common octopus are more vigorous at night than in the daytime. The common octopus feeds on 1-4 bait crabs per day and consume each crab in 40-50 min. The sensory organs of the common octopus are more influenced by the sense of touch and smell, than by vision. Using live bait is more effective and advantageous than using dead bait, as the common octopus responded more to live bait. The hiding habits of the common octopus were very intensive, as they hid around all the shelters that were provided in this study. They demonstrated territorial behavior and struggled to maintain their sphere of influence. In addition, out of the various colors for shelters and bait supplied, the common octopus preferred light colors.

  • Antibiotics have been routinely used to control the disease of farm-raised animals in the aquaculture facilities without any criterion based on a pharmacokinetic study. This lack of information on the effective usage of antibiotics would have brought the farmers to use excessive and/or less dosages, causing the advent of drug-resistant bacteria as well as economic loss and possible contamination of the local farming area. Until recently, few studies on a detailed manual for the antibiotic usage including chemotherapy procedure, dosage, and treatment schedule of the aquatic antibiotics have been conducted throughout the world. To the worse, there is no available criterion for optimal usage of aquatic antibiotics to control diseases in aquatic farms in this country because every country has its own aquacultural system. Therefore, based on the previous studies on the usage of the various antibiotics, our studies are to focus on the development of optimal method for the detection of various antibiotics on the fate of antibiotics applied to the fish, including absorption, circulation, and secretion physiology. Pharmacokinetic study were to sep up the optimal detective condition against residual antibiotics of fish by HPLC. The grinding pefloxacin for 15 min is most effective in dissolution test and pharmacokinetic parameters. Pharmacokinetic parameters were satisfactory for 15 min-grinding products and they can be explained as one-compartment model.

  • Evidence highlighting the importance of gut microbiota in biodiversity conservation is growing; however, gut bacteria in South Korean wildlife have not been well identified. Using a culture-dependent isolation method, we identified the gut bacteria from Korean aquatic wildlife: the gazami crab (Portunus trituberculatus), Korean striped bitterling (Acheilognathus yamatsutae), oily bitterling (Acheilognathus koreensis), leopard mandarin fish (Siniperca scherzeri), Korean dark chub (Zacco koreanus), diving beetle (Cybister lewisianus), spotted steed (Abbottina springeri), and Korean spotted sleeper (Odontobutis obscura interrupta). We identified 18 strains previously unrecorded in South Korea by comparing 16S rRNA gene sequences of isolates against the EzBioCloud and National Institute of Biological Resources(NIBR) databases. The isolated strains belong to the phyla Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, and Proteobacteria. We also assessed for phylogenetic relatedness, Gram-stain reaction, colony and cell morphology, and biochemical characteristics. Basic information and 16S rRNA gene sequences of the isolates were registered in NIBR, and NIBR accession numbers are provided.

  • Neurokinin B (NKB) is a neuropeptide involved in the regulation of reproductive endocrine system of vertebrate animals, including fish. However, the pathway of NKB action in fish has not been clearly elucidated. In order to clarify the effect of NKB and NKF (neurokinin F) on gonadotropic hormone (GTH) gene expression in the pituitary, we studied the changes of LHβ and FSHβ gene expressions by using two different pituitary culture methods (whole pituitary culture or dispersed pituitary cell culture). Pituitaries were removed from mature female and male Nile tilapia. Changes of LHβ and FSHβ gene expressions were measured and compared after the treatment with NKB or NKF peptides at concentrations 0 to 1,000 nM. Expression of GTH genes in the whole pituitary cultures treated with NKB or NKF peptides did not show significant difference except in female at one concentration when treated with NKF. On the contrary, there were significant changes of GTH gene expressions in the dispersed pituitary cell cultures when treated with NKB and NKF peptides. These results suggest that dispersed pituitary cell culture is more relevant than whole pituitary culture in studying the function of pituitary, and that NKB and NKF could act directly on the pituitary to regulate the expression of GTH genes.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop fashion cultural products that contain an example of cultural symbolism, which is based on the results of iconological analysis seen on imaginary animals. The method of research was to derive design ideas through a verbal association method, using the technique of mind map as based on the iconological analysis results. In the scarf design, four auspicious animals were used as the main motifs, and the background elements that appeared with each folk painting were used as sub-motifs for each of the four animals. In this case, the Yong was expressed with an image of clouds and flames as sub-motifs, and was strongly represented by the presence of a contrast color combination. In what follows, the Bonghwang was used with the sun and feathers in a stable structure due to its four-way arrangement, and was expressed with its soft light tone. The Shingoo was used with blue and khaki colors of dull and deep tone, and the image of aquatic plants and lotus were used. Finally, with the Kirin was represented by a symmetrical structure as characterized with a dull toned color and square border that provides a sense of stability. The clutch bags were as generally expressed using simple animal motifs, and were composed of a uniform motif and color. The design process used the Illustrator CS6 to perform motifs design. In the end, the process finally developed the actual product of eight scarves and four clutch handbags.
