  • This paper investigates the convergence characteristics of the modified artificial compressibility method proposed by Turkel. In particular, a focus is mode on the convergence characteristics due to variation of the preconditioning factor (${\alpha}_u$) and the artificial compressibility (${\beta}$) in conjunction with an upwind method. For the investigations, a code using the modified artificial compressibility is developed. The code solves the axisymmetric incompressible Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations. The cell-centered finite volume method is used in conjunction with Roe's approximate Riemann solver for the inviscid flux, and the central difference discretization is used for the viscous flux. Time marching is accomplished by the approximated factorization-alternate direction implicit method. In addition, Menter's k-${\omega}$ shear stress transport turbulence model is adopted for analysis of turbulent flows. Inviscid, laminar, and turbulent flows are solved to investigate the accuracy of solutions and convergence behavior in the modified artificial compressibility method. The possible reason for loss of robustness of the modified artificial compressibility method with ${\alpha}_u$ >1.0 is given.

  • The flow field if a ship's propulsion mechanism of Weis-Fogh type is studied by the discrete vertex method. The wing in a channel is approximated by a finite number of bound vortices, and free vortices representing the separated flow are introduced from the trailing edge if the wing. The time histories of the thrust, the drag, and the moment acting on the wing are calculated, including the unsteady force due to the change of strength of the bound vortices. These calculated values agree well with the experimental values. The flow field of this propulsion mechanism is numerically clarified.

  • The paper considers the computation method in the performance evaluation of cellular network in the phase-type distribution assumptions that the channel holding times induced from mobility are modeled by well-fitted distributions to reflect an actual situation. When ww consider a phase-type distribution model instead of exponential distribution, the complexity of the computation increase exponential even though the accuracy is improved. We consider an efficient numerical algorithm to compute the performance evaluations in cellular networks such as a handoff call dropping probability, new call blocking probability, and handoff arrival rate. Numerical experiment shows that numerical analysis results are well approximated to the results of simulation.

  • A formulation of the boundary element method (BEM) based on Kirchhoff's hypothesis to analyse stiffened plates composed by beams and slabs with different materials is proposed. The stiffened plate is modelled by a zoned plate, where different values of thickness, Poisson ration and Young's modulus can be defined for each sub-region. The proposed integral representations can be used to analyze the coupled stretching-bending problem, where the membrane effects are taken into account, or to analyze the bending and stretching problems separately. To solve the domain integrals of the integral representation of in-plane displacements, the beams and slabs domains are discretized into cells where the displacements have to be approximated. As the beams cells nodes are adopted coincident to the elements nodes, new independent values arise only in the slabs domain. Some numerical examples are presented and compared to a wellknown finite element code to show the accuracy of the proposed model.

  • This paper has dealt with the design and analysis methods of the frequency characteristics for the power dividers which are extensively used in CATV and DBS systems. Therefore, the lumped-element circuits have been implemented based on the Wilkinson power divider and the characteristics of the circuits approximated to ideal transformer examined. Then the frequency characteristics are analysised by using even ㆍodd-mode method. Furthermore, in order to improve the characteristics, the optimum design method by adding compensating circuit has been proposed and it has been shown that the characteristics are improved remarkably.

  • Many direct integration methods are used for numerical analyses of dynamic motion. In these methods, the governing equations of a dynamic system are integrated successively using a step-by-step numerical integration procedure. Time derivatives in the equations are generally approximated using difference formulas involving one or more increments of the time. Time increment has closely relationship with the accuracy of the motion analysis. In this paper, a 4th order Houbolt direct integration method is derived. For a spring-mass system, the motion of the system are analyzed from the 3rd order Houbolt and the 4th order Houbolt approaches respectively. Finally the paper proposes the optimal time-increment based on the accuracy of numerical analyses.

  • This paper presents an explanatory study of combining the finite element and boundary element methods to achieve an efficient and accurate analysis of frame structure containing shear wall. This model analyzes the frame by finite element method and the shear wall by boundary element method. The purpose of this study is the specific case that boundary element is surrounded by finite element. If material properties of shear wall are relatively the very smaller than it of frame structure, the displacement shape of each node is calculated exactly. And if the solution of displacement is the larger, the displacement shape is approximated more accurately.

  • Control Moment Gyro (CMG) has been used as an indirect actuator of a single-wheel robot system GYROBO, developed at Chungnam National University. The flip motion of the gimbal system produces the gyroscopic motion onto the body system while the body motion also produces the gyroscopic motion onto the gimbal system inversely. In this paper, the intuitive equation of the inverse gyroscopic effect is derived as the direct relation between the rate of the body system and the rate of the gimbal system. Experiments on the inverse gyroscopic effect under the chaotically generated disturbance are conducted. Experimental data are approximated by a linear equation using the least square method.
