Many studies have been performed to predict a reliable and accurate stress-range distribution and fatigue damage regarding the Gaussian wide-band stress response due to multi-peak waves and multiple dynamic loads. So far, most of the approximation models provide slightly inaccurate results in comparison with the rain-flow counting method as an exact solution. A step-by-step study was carried out to develop new approximate spectral moments that are close to the rain-flow counting moment, which can be used for the development of a fatigue damage model. Using the special parameters and bandwidth parameters, four kinds of parameter-based combinations were constructed and estimated using the R-squared values from regression analysis. Based on the results, four candidate empirical formulas were determined and compared with the rain-flow counting moment, probability density function, and root mean square (RMS) value for relative distance. The new approximate spectral moments were finally decided through comparison studies of eight response spectra. The new spectral moments presented in this study could play an important role in improving the accuracy of fatigue damage model development. The present study shows that the new approximate moment is a very important variable for the enhancement of Gaussian wide-band fatigue damage assessment.

The A60 class deck penetration piece is a fire-resistant system installed on a horizontal compartment to prevent flame spreading and protect lives in fire accidents in ships and offshore plants. This study deals with approximate optimization using discrete variables for the fire resistance design of an A60 class deck penetration piece using different surrogate models and a genetic algorithm. Transient heat transfer analysis was performed to evaluate the fire resistance design of the A60 class deck penetration piece. For the approximate optimization of the piece, the length, diameter, material type, and insulation density were applied to discrete design variables, and temperature, productivity, and cost constraints were considered. The approximate optimum design problem based on the surrogate models was formulated such that the discrete design variables were determined by minimizing the weight of the piece subjected to the constraints. The surrogate models used in the approximate optimization were the response surface model, Kriging model, and radial basis function-based neural network. The approximate optimization results were compared with the actual analysis results in terms of approximate accuracy. The radial basis function-based neural network showed the most accurate optimum design results for the fire resistance design of the A60 class deck penetration piece.
Geometric nonlinearity can significantly affect load-carrying capacity of slender columns. Dependence of structural stability on columns necessitates the consideration of second-order effects in the design process of columns, appropriately. On the whole, the design codes present a simplified procedure for second order analysis of slender columns. In this approximate method, the end moments of columns resulted from linear analysis (first-order) are multiplied by the recommended moment amplification factors of codes to achieve magnified moments of the second-order analysis. In the other approach, the equilibrium equations are directly solved for the deformed configuration of structure, so the resulting moments and deflections contain the influence of slenderness and increase more rapidly than do loads. The aim of this study is to evaluate the accuracy of moment amplification factors of Iranian national building code whose provisions are similar to the ACI requirement. Herein, finite element method is used to achieve magnified end moments of reinforced concrete moment resisting frames, and the outcomes are compared with the moments acquired based on the proposed approximate method by Iranian national building code. The results show that the approximate method of Iranian code for calculating magnified moments has significant errors for both unbraced and braced columns.

Numerical analysis has been conducted to characterize deposition rates of aerosol particles onto a heated, rotating disk with electrostatic effect under the laminar flow field. The particle transport mechanisms considered were convection, Brownian diffusion, gravitational settling, thermophoresis and electrophoresis. The aerosol particles were assumed to have a Boltzmann charge distribution. The electric potential distribution needed to calculate local electric fields around the disk was calculated from the Laplace equation. The Coulomb, the image, the dielectrophoretic and the dipole-dipole forces acting on a charged particle near the conducting rotating disk were included in the analysis. The averaged particle deposition vetocities and their radial distributions on the upper surface of the disk were calculated from the particle concentration equation in a Eulerian frame of reference, along with a rotation speed of 0∼1,000rpm, a temperature difference of 0∼5K and a charged disk voltage of 0∼1000V.Finally, an approximate deposition velocity model for the rotating disk was suggested. The present numerical results showed relatively good agreement with the results of the present approximate model and the available experimental data.

Two-dimensional mesoscopic analysis (meso-analysis) is applied to solids including microdefects such as microcracks or holes. For the problem of effective moduli of microdefrcted solids, various approximate schemes are introduced by using microcrack density and hole density for macro level parameter. Also, microcracks distributed in the parallel direction and random direction are considered. Several numerical studies using meso-analysis are carried out and the results are compared with several approximate schemes in order to show the validity of proposed meso-analysis.

More often a commercial package for the structural analysis is necessary in the structural optimum design. In this case the task of combining the package with an optimization program must be required, hut it is not so simple because interchanging some data between them is difficult. Sequential approximate optimization is currently used as a natural way to overcome the hard task. If sequential approximate optimization has wide side constraints that the lower limit of design variables is very small and their upper limit is very large, it is not so easy to obtain approximated functions accurately for the whole design domain. This paper proposes a sequential design domain method, which is very useful to carry out sequential approximate optimization in this case. In this paper, the response surface methodology is used to obtain approximated functions and the orthogonal array is used for design of experiments. The sequential approximate optimization of 3-bar and 10-bar trusses is demonstrated to verify the reliability of the sequential design domain method.
In this paper, we carry out a performance analysis of a two-user free-space optical (FSO) communication system with photodetector multiplexing, in which the two users are defined as the primary user (PU) and secondary user (SU). Unlike common single-user FSO systems, our photodetector multiplexing FSO system deploys a shared detector at the receiver and enables PU and SU to send their own data synchronously. We conduct the performance analysis of this FSO system for two cases: (1) in the absence of background radiation, and (2) in the presence of background radiation. Decision strategies for PU and SU are presented according to the two scenarios above. Exact and approximate conditional symbol-error probability (SEP) expressions for both PU and SU are derived, in an ideal channel with no fading. Average SEP expressions are also presented in the no-background-radiation scenario. Additionally, in some particular cases where the power ratio tends to 0.5 or 1, approximate SEP expressions are also obtained. Finally, numerical simulations are presented under different conditions, to support the performance analysis.

When exact analytical solutions to certain type of heat conduction problems are quite cumbersome or not obtainable, it is important to introduce approximate analytical methods which are simple and useful compared with numerical methods. In this study, therefore, the Heat Balance Integral Method is applied to analysis of steady-state conduction in a straight fin of trapezoidal profile, and the two-dimensional temperature distribution in the fin and the approximate fin efficiency are obtained. Results are compared with those by the one- dimensional analysis and two-dimensional numerical analysis for a wide range of Biot numbers. It is shown that the two-dimensional temperature distribution obtained by the integral method is in good agreement with that by the finite element method at Biot numbers for which the result by the one-dimensional analysis is unreliable.
This paper focuses on the nonlinear vibrations of stay cables and evaluates the dynamic characteristics of stay cables by using the nonlinear enhanced MECS approach and the approximate approach. The nonlinear enhanced MECS approach is that both the girder-tower vibrations and the cable vibrations including parametric cable vibrations are simultaneously considered in the numerical analysis of cable-stayed bridges. Cable finite element method is used to simulate the responses including the parametric vibrations of stay cables. The approximate approach is based on the assumption that cable vibrations have a small effect on girder-tower vibrations, and analyzes the local cable vibrations after obtaining the girder-tower responses. Under the periodic excitations or the moderate ground motion, the differences of the responses of stay cables between these two approaches are evaluated in detail. The effect of cable vibrations on the girder and towers are also discussed. As a result, the dynamic characteristics of the parametric vibrations in stay cables can be evaluated by using the approximate approach or the nonlinear enhanced MECS approach. Since the different axial force fluctuant of stay cables in both ends of one girder causes the difference response values between two approach, it had better use the nonlinear enhanced MECS approach to perform the dynamic analyses of cable-stayed bridges.
The paper deals with strength design of a riser support installed on floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel under various loading conditions - operation, extreme, damaged, one line failure case (OLFC) and installation. The design problem is formulated such that thickness sizing variables are determined by minimizing the weight of a riser support structure subject to stresses constraints. The initial design model is generated based on an actual FPSO riser support specification. The finite element analysis (FEA) is conducted using MSC/NASTRAN, and optimal solutions are obtained via moving least squares method (MLSM) in the context of response surface based approximate optimization. For the meta-modeling of inequality constraint functions of stresses, a constraint-feasible moving least squares method (CF-MLSM) is used in the present study. The method of CF-MLSM, compared to a conventional MLSM, has been shown to ensure the constraint feasibility in a case where the approximate optimization process is employed. The optimization results present improved design performances under various riser operating conditions.
