  • An inverse method is introduced to construct the problem for the error analysis of the numerical solution of initial value problem. These problems constructed through this method have a known exact solution, even though analytical solutions are generally not obtainable. The process leading to the exact solution makes use of an initially available approximate numerical solution. A smooth interpolation of the approximate solution is forced to exactly satisfy the differential equation by analytically deriving a small forcing function to absorb all of the errors in the interpolated approximate solution. Using this special case exact solution, it is possible to investigate the relationship between global errors of a candidate numerical solution process and the associated tuning parameters for a given problem. Under the assumption that the original differential equation is well-posed with respect to the small perturbations, we thereby obtain valuable information about the optimal choice of the tuning parameters and the achievable accuracy of the numerical solution.

  • In the structural analysis, artificial neural networks as a parallel computational model that is similar to the human brain and can self-organize complex nonlinear relationships without making assumptions is introduced. The purpose of this paper is to develop the Neural Network for Approximate Structural Analysis(NNASA) to predict the behaviour of the stub-girder system. As an initial stage, the paper presents the development of the prototype of NNASA based on the problem related to the deflection of a simple beam, and shows the verification of this model by two examples.

  • Two approximate methods for a cosmic radiation shielding calculation in low earth orbits were developed and assessed. Those are a sectoring method and a chord-length distribution method. In order to simulate a change in cosmic radiation environments along the satellite mission trajectory, IGRF model and AP(E)-8 model were used. When the approximate methods were applied, the geometrical model of satellite structure was approximated as one-dimensional slabs, and a pre-calculated dose-depth conversion function was introduced to simplify the dose calculation process. Verification was performed with mission data of KITSAT-1 and the calculated results were also compared with detailed 3-dimensional calculation results using Monte Carlo calculation. Dose results from the approximate methods were conservatively higher than Monte Carlo results, but were lower than experimental data in total dose rate. Differences between calculation and experimental data seem to come from the AP-8 model, for which it is reported that fluxes of proton are underestimated. We confirmed that the developed approximate method can be applied to commercial satellite shielding calculations. It is also found that commercial products of semi-conductors can be damaged due to total ionizing dose under LEO radiation environment. An intensive shielding analysis should be taken into account when commercial devices are used.

  • An approximate similarity theory has been applied to predict the forming load of non-axisymmetric forging of aluminum alloys through model material tests. The approximate similarity theory is applicable when strain rate sensitivity, geometrical size, and die velocity of model materials are different from those of real materials. Actually, the forming load of yoke, which is an automobile part made of aluminum alloys(Al-6061), is predicted by using this approximate similarity theory. Firstly, upset forging tests are have been carried out to determine the flow curves of three model materials and aluminum alloy(Al-6061), and a suitable model material is selected for model material test of Al-6061. And then hot forging tests of aluminum yokes have been performed to verify the forming load predicted from the model material, which has been selected from above upset forging tests. The forming loads of aluminum yoke forging predicted by this approximate similarity theory are in good agreement with the experimental results of Al-6061 and the results of finite element analysis using DEFORM-3D.

  • Dynamic analysis of dam-reservoir-foundation system is usually carried out by employing a simplified and approximate one-dimensional model to account for fluid-foundation interaction. The approximation introduced on this basis is examined thoroughly in this paper by comparing the method with the rigorous approach. It is concluded that the errors due to approximate method could be very significant both for horizontal and vertical ground motions.

  • This paper defines the modified effective membrane stiffness, bending stiffness considering the directionally dependent mechanical properties and mode shape function of a composite lattice rectangular plate, which is assumed to be a Kirchhoff-Love plate. It subsequently presents an approximate method of conducting a buckling analysis of the composite lattice rectangular plate with various boundary conditions under uniform compression using the Ritz method. This method considers the coupled buckling mode as well as the global and local buckling modes. The validity of the present method is verified by comparing the results of the finite element analysis. In addition, this paper performs a parametric analysis to investigate the effects of the design parameters on the critical load and buckling mode shape of the composite lattice rectangular plate based on the present method. The results allow a database to be obtained on the buckling characteristics of composite lattice rectangular plates. Consequently, it is concluded that the present method which facilitates the calculation of the critical load and buckling mode shape according to the design parameters as well as the parametric analysis are very useful not only because of their structural design but also because of the buckling analysis of composite lattice structures.

  • The paper deals with comparative study for characteristics of approximation of design space according to various approximate models and sensitivity analysis using orthogonal array experiments in structure design of active type DSF which was developed for float-over installation of offshore plant. This study aims to propose the orthogonal array experiments based design methodology which is able to efficiently explore an optimum design case and to generate the accurate approximate model. Thickness sizes of main structure member were applied to the design factors, and output responses were considered structure weight and strength performances. Quantitative effects on the output responses for each design factor were evaluated using the orthogonal array experiment. Best design case was also identified to improve the structure design with weight minimization. From the orthogonal array experiment results, various approximate models such as response surface model, Kriging model, Chebyshev orthogonal polynomial model, and radial basis function based neural network model were generated. The experiment results from orthogonal array method were validated by the approximate modeling results. It was found that the radial basis function based neural network model among the approximate models was able to approximate the design space of the active type DSF with the highest accuracy.

  • Repetitive strings such as periods have been studied vigorously in so diverse fields as data compression, computer-assisted music analysis, bioinformatics, and etc. In bioinformatics, periods are highly related to repetitive patterns in DNA sequences so called tandem repeats. In some cases, quite similar but not the same patterns are repeated and thus we need approximate string matching algorithms to study tandem repeats in DNA sequences. In this paper, we propose a new definition of approximate periods of strings based on distance sum. Given two strings $p({\mid}p{\mid}=m)$ and $x({\mid}x{\mid}=n)$, we propose an algorithm that computes the minimum approximate period distance based on distance sum. Our algorithm runs in $O(mn^2)$ time for the weighted edit distance, and runs in O(mn) time for the edit distance, and runs in O(n) time for the Hamming distance.

  • The success of coarse-mesh nodal solution methods provides strong motivation for finding homogenized parameters which, when used in global nodal calculation, will reproduce exactly all average nodal reaction rates for large nodes. Two approximate theories for finding these ideal parameters, namely, simplified equivalence theory and approximate node equivalence theory, are described herein and then applied to the PWR benchmark problem. Nodal code, ANM, is used for the global calculation as well as for the homogenization calculation. From the comparative analysis, it is recommended that homogenization be carried out only for the unique type of fuel assemblies and for core boundary color-sets. The use of approximate homogenized cross-sections and approximate discontinuity factors predicts nodal powers with maximum error of 0.8% and criticality within 0.1% error relative to the fine-mesh KIDD calculations.

  • In this study, the prototype structure of seismically designed steel moment frame was analyzed statically and dynamically in order to demonstrate the applicability of energy-based approximate analysis with the dynamic effect of sudden column loss in the evaluation of the collapse resistance and a method for assessing the sensitivity to progressive collapse was proposed. For the purpose of comparing the structural behavior of buildings with different structural systems, the sensitivity of the structure to the sudden removal of vertical members can be used as a significant measure. The energy-based approximate analysis prediction for the prototype structure considered in the study showed good agreement with the dynamic analysis result. In the sensitivity evaluation, the structural robustness index that indicates the ability of a structure to resist collapse induced by abnormal loads was used. It was confirmed that the proposed methods can be used conveniently and rationally in progressive collapse analysis and design.
