적정기술의 맥락과 공학교육에의 적용 필요성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Context of Appropriate Technology and Implications for Engineering Education)

  • This paper explores the concept and historic context of appropriate technology to provide the academic community with better understanding, insights, current trends, and finally, implications for engineering education. To do that, a rigorous literature survey has been carried out. The result supports that the appropriate technology concept will meet present tasks of engineering education, which calls on policy development and further studies.

  • 최근에 4차 산업 혁명을 견인하기 할 수 있는 다품종 소량을 위한 주요 제조 기술로써 적층 제조 공정이 부각 되고 있다. 적층 제조 공정의 층별 적층 특성은 상대적으로 저비용으로 3차원 형상과 기능성을 가진 실제 제품을 쾌속 제작할 수 있다. 이 논문의 목적은 개발 도상국들을 위한 적층 제조 공정의 적정 기술 분야 적용성에 대한 고찰이다. 적층 제조 공정의 적정 기술 적용 예들에 대한 조사/분석을 수행하여, 적층 제조 공정의 적정 기술 분야 실제 활용 가능성에 대하여 고찰하였다. 또한, 적층 제조 공정의 적정 기술 분야에 대한 주요 적용 예들을 소개하였다. 최종적으로 개발 도상국에서 적층 제조 기술을 이용한 실제적 제품 생산에 관련된 적정 기술 측면의 향후 발전 방향에 대하여 토론하였다.

저개발국가를 위한 적정기술과 공학설계교육에 관한 고찰 (A Short Review of Appropriate Technology and Engineering Design Education for Underdeveloped Countries)

  • During the past decades, dramatic technology changes affected the life of billions of people around the globe. Although these changes resulted to economic benefits, mostly for the developed countries, the undiscerning development also resulted to many side effects, such as environment pollution, scarce natural resources, global warming, and an increase of the gap between "those who have" and "those who have not", among others. Also, since these developments were based on high technologies, they were not suitable for 90% of the underdeveloped countries. In this review, the possible ways of increasing the quality of life in underdeveloped countries are described, by providing adaptive solutions using appropriate technologies. Some successful applications of appropriate and intermediate technology are introduced, and the need for a new undergraduate education course of engineering design based on appropriate technology is proposed for Korea.

Incompetent Construction Technologies and Resources in the Construction Industry of Yemen

  • The Construction industry in Yemen confronts many development constraints, such as the inadequate implementation of appropriate building materials and labour construction technologies. Thus, this research looks over building materials and labour construction technologies used on the local housing construction projects by verifying the percentage of construction expenditure consumed by the main construction components (Materials, Labour and Overhead and Profit), along with the implemented construction technologies. The paper conducts a survey to acquire the cost distribution of the construction main components. The outcomes of the survey were discussed; the discussion was supported by literature on similar issues from some countries. The outcomes confirmed the relatively limited percentage in labour cost and profit, and the elevated percentage of construction materials cost, which are because of the excessive and inappropriate use of materials. What's more, established that the excessively redundant unskilled labours are not effectively engaged in the construction activities, this is due to the tendency of the market in using labour-base technologies. This paper is to recommend a suitable policies and strategies has to be used to decrease cost by using efficiently appropriate construction practice and local materials, moreover take advantage of excessive labour to reduce unemployment.

  • In general, solid waste arises from lots of human activities such as domestic, agricultural, industrial, commercial, waste water treatment, construction, and mining activities etc. If the waste is not properly disposal and treated, it will have a negative impact to the environment, and hygienic conditions in urban areas and pollute the air with greenhouse gases (GHG), ground water, as well as the soil and crops. In this paper, the Carbon Resources Recycling Appropriate Technology Center feasibility studies are reported at Bantayan Island, Philippines on the municipal solid waste management. The present objective of our study is to characterize the municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) bottom ash and case study of MSWI production status in Bantayan, Philippines. Currently, wide variety of smart technologies available for MSWI management in developed countries. Recycling is the other major alternative process for MSWI landfill issues. In this paper, the feasibility studies of applied appropriate technologies for the municipal solid waste generation in Bantayan Island, Philippines are reported.

A Field Study for Sustainable Community Empowerment through Appropriate Technology of Water Purification and the Concept of Feces Standard Money in Hatphain Village, Lao PDR

  • The application of appropriate technologies in a developing country is an opportunity to introduce green technology which may lead people to imagine a better life. This point is at the intersection of appropriate technology and sustainable development. This research focuses on Hatphain village where there is no clean water, sewage system, or power lines. Two environmental technologies (an unpowered water purification system, Ongdalsaem and an eco-toilet system, BeeVi toilet) were introduced, based on the concepts of the environmental self- sustainable village and feces Standard Money (fSM). We found that the Ongdalsaem was effective in reducing the concentration of nitrogen and lead in the water in Hatphain. The BeeVi water-free toilet was installed, allowing urine and feces to be separated and used as compost. We strived to spread ideas of sustainability using new eco-circulation experiences and encouraging learning about environmental technology through practical and playing facilities that residents managed themselves.

  • 산업안전에 대한 관심이 증가하는 가운데 최근 제조현장에서 다양한 방법으로 적용되고 있는 스마트공장 기술을 활용한 산업재해 방지 기술도 다양하게 연구되고 있다. 하지만 현실적인 문제로 인해 산업재해의 큰 비중을 차지하는 중소기업에서 이러한 스마트공장 기술의 적용을 통한 산업재해 방지에 어려움이 따르고 있다. 본 연구에서는 산업재해 유형별 맞춤형 모니터링 및 경보 시스템을 개발하고 실제 현장에 적용하였으며, 이를 통해 중소기업에서 활용할 수 있는 적정 스마트공장 기술을 통한 산업재해 방지 기술을 실증하였다. 작업자 신체 접근, 누전 및 과전류, 고온에 의한 화재 및 화상, 유해물질 배출이라는 네 가지 주요 재해 유형에 대해 비전센서, 전류센서, 온도센서 및 가스센서를 활용하여 맞춤형 모니터링 시스템을 구축하였다. 더불어 모니터링 된 위험요소 빠르게 인지할 수 있도록 작업환경에 맞는 알림 방안을 적용하고, 실시간 데이터 전송 및 디스플레이를 활용하여 작업자와 관리자가 재해 위험을 효과적으로 인지할 수 있도록 하였다. 이러한 적정 스마트공장 기술의 적용 및 실증을 통한 효과를 확인하고 이러한 산업안전 기술의 확산에 대해 논의하고자 한다.

하수도 기술의 평가 인증제도 운영현황 및 방향 (Current Status of Sewerage Technology Evalution Verification System and Direction for Improvement of the System)

  • As sewerage works has become one of the major public works in Korea, the employment of advanced and more appropriate sewerage technology has become essential to improve the efficiency of sewerage works. During last 10 years, the Korean Government has made tremendous amount of investment on sewerage works so that treatment plants in 58 cities have treatment capacity which is equivalent to 52.8% of total daily sewage generation in Korea. This remarkable development, however, has heavily depended on one technology, the conventional activated sludge process as more than 95% of the existing plants employ this process, Recently, the Korean Government and local authorities have plans to introduce more appropriate sewage treatment technologies and research and development in this area has become very active. To encourage employing new and appropriate technologies, however, the proper technology evaluation and verification program for new process is needed. The public sector should play a key role in this program since the sewerage works is one of the major public works. In this paper, the technology evaluation and verification programs related with sewerage facilities in the US and Japan are briefly reviewed. The Innovatived and Alternative Technology programs which was operated by US EPA until recently and Environmental Technology Verification(ETV) program which was commenced in 1995 are introduced. The technology verification programs operated in Japan and also in Korea are also reviewed in this paper to propose a future direction for development of the appropriate evaluation and verification system.

  • Recently, construction industry makes a great effort on minimizing the environmental impact. While various environmental-friendly technologies are applied to the operating phase of buildings, few equipment or machinery are partly used during the construction phase. For this reason, this study carried out a comprehensive analysis on environmental-friendly technologies for the whole construction process. In this study, appropriate environmental-friendly technologies of each construction activity were elicited to improve the environment of construction sites. Environmental-friendly technologies and construction activities were selected by professional consultation and descriptive statistics analysis, and proper environmental-friendly technologies were elicited from Cross-Impact Analysis. As a result, waste disposal and recycling technology was highly effective for demolition work while development of replacing materials was for reinforced concrete work.

  • Various nondestructive technologies for quality inspection of fruits and vegetables were reviewed through published literatures and selected agricultural databases. These technologies were grouped into nine categories, including acoustic response, dielectric response, machine vision, magnetic response, mechanical vibration response, microwave response, optical properties, and other possible sensing technologies. Their principles and characteristics were investigated and these technologies were presented with their current and potential applications. The link of appropriate nondestructive technologies with common principal quality parameters of fruits and vegetables was summarized.
