  • Development of mountain area is increasing due to the demand for improvement of traffic convenience and development of underdeveloped area. Therefore, there frequently are sections where tunnels and interchanges are located close to each other. These sections do not only affect tunnel planning, types and length of interchanges, but also affect more on route selection. In Korea, several design criteria present each reference value but these values are very similar. In the situation, the minimum value among them is usually applied when planning roads and it could cause traffic safety problems in different site conditions. In this study, the problems of design speed, illuminance adaptation distance, and lane change intervals are analyzed by simulating the cases that the problem could occur when calculating the separation distance between tunnel and interchange. The results obtained from this study can be summarized as following: the driving speed should be applied in case that the site has a big gap between design speed and driving speed because the uniform application of the design speed is not safe; the illuminance adaptation distance should include the influence distance in the section affected by the direct light; in addition, the lane change distance should include the time to perceive the situation of the next lane after the lane change in the section required for successive lane change.

  • Objective: The aims of this study were to provide the basic data for establishing a precautionary management policy and to develop a methodology for selecting a radon management priority target area suitable for the Korean domestic environment. Methods: A suitable mapping method for the domestic environment was derived by conducting a quantitative comparison of predicted values and measured values that were calculated through implementation of two models such as IDW and RBF methods. And a qualitative comparison including the clarity of information transmission of the written radon map was carried out. Results: The predicted and measured values were obtained through the implementation of the spatial analysis models. The IDW method showed the lowest in the calculated mean square error and had a higher correlation coefficient than the other methods. As results of comparing the uncertainty using the jackknife concept and the concept of error distance for comparison of the differences according to the model interpolation method, the sum of the error distances showed a modest increase compared with the RBF method. As a result of qualitatively comparing the information transfer clarity between the radon maps prepared with the predicted values through the model implementation, it was found that the maps plotted using the predicted values by the implementation of the IDW method had greater clarity in terms of highness and lowness of radon concentration per area compared with the maps plotted by other methods. Conclusions: The radon management priority area suggests selecting a metropolitan city including an area with a high radon concentration.

  • We describe the improvement of insulation performance and the prevention of electrolyte leakage in a single cell in order to prevent the fuming phenomenon caused by leakage of electrolyte in a lithium secondary battery in a submerged weapon (torpedo) operated in Korea. A torpedo using lithium secondary battery as a main power source (propulsion battery) can induce the heat and fuming phenomenon, which makes it inconvenient for naval equipment operation in Korea. In the simulation test, the electrolyte of some battery cells leaked in the battery pack unit, leading to a short circuit between the main power circuit and the terminal tab of the high voltage part. We analyzed the characteristics and mechanism of the lithium secondary battery during this heat generation and fuming phenomenon. In order to prevent leakage of the electrolyte in the lithium secondary battery, the design was improved via fundamental (terminal tap enhancement) and complementary (insulation block selection and installation) measures. Comparison of the performance test before and after the improvement showed that the tensile strength of the tap terminal was improved about 2 times and the withstand voltage characteristic was improved. The application of quality improvement measures resulted in no fuming even after more than 3 years of field operation. This result is expected to improve the operation and storage stability of the torpedo propulsion cell.

  • It is important to evaluate the fracture network in a rock volume because fractures control the ground conditions and fluid flow characteristics. Therefore, various attempts have been made to quantify fracture networks to better understand ground and flow conditions. The use of fracture density alone (a quantitative parameter based on geometric analysis) does not fully explain the evolution of fracture networks, or quantify the spatial relationship (e.g. connectivity) of fractures in a rock mass. Therefore, the need for fracture network characterization based on topological analysis has recently emerged. In Korea however, the topological analysis of fracture networks within a rock mass has rarely been studied. As such, the definition of the topological analysis of fracture networks and the graph theory related to the topological analysis are briefly summarized in this study. We also introduce an application method for these analyses to fracture characterization. If the topological method is used for the analysis of fracture networks, it can also be adopted to analyze fluid flow characteristics of groundwater, characterize petroleum reservoirs, and analyze the evolution of a fracture network. In addition, topological analysis can be useful for site selection of major facilities such as nuclear waste disposal sites because it can be used to evaluate the stability of the potential sites.

  • Silkworms have traditionally been used to produce silk and textiles. However, steamed and freeze-dried mature silkworm larval powder (SMSP) contain large amounts of amino acids, vitamins, and essential minerals. In this study, we investigated the potential of SMSP as a hangover-relieving agent. Thirty individuals who met the selection criteria and exclusion criteria were included in the study and subsequently underwent a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, cross-design human application test. Importantly, the test product containing SMSP (CKDHC) was proven to alleviate hangovers through a significant reduction in the plasma concentration of acetaldehyde in the context of an alcohol-induced hangover model. In particular, from 0.5 h after SMSP intake, the blood acetaldehyde concentration (mg/L), area under the time curve (AUC; indicating the degree of bioabsorption of blood acetaldehyde), and the highest blood acetaldehyde concentration (Cmax) were reduced. Altogether, these results suggest that the test product (CKDHC) exhibits an accelerated hangover-relieving effect.

  • Selection or generation of appropriate input ground motion is very important in performing a dynamic analysis. In Korea, it is a common practice to use recorded strong ground motions or artificial motions. The recorded motions show non-stationary characteristics, which is a distinct property of all earthquake motions, but have the problem of not matching the design response spectrum. The artificial motions match the design spectrum, but show stationary characteristics. This study generated ground motions that preserve the non-stationary characteristics of a real earthquake motion, but also matches the design spectrum. In the process, an impulse function-based algorithm that adjusts a given time series in time domain such that it matches the target response spectrum is used. Application of the algorithm showed that it can successfully adjust any recorded motions to match the target spectrum and also preserve the non-stationary characteristics. The modified motions are used to perform a series of nonlinear site response analyses. It is shown that the results using the adjusted motions result in more reliable estimates of ground vibration. It is thus recommended that the newly adjusted motions be used in practice instead of original recorded motions.

  • Here, we introduce a laser-induced graphene synthesis technology and its applications for the electric/electronic device manufacturing process. Recently, the micro/nanopatterning technique of graphene has received great attention for the utilization of these new graphene structures, which shows progress developments at present with a variety of uses in electronic devices. Some examples of practical applications suggested a great potential for the tunable graphene synthetic manners through the control of the laser set-up, such as a selection of the wavelength, power adjustment, and optical techniques. This emerging technology has expandability to electric/electronic devices combined together with existed micro-packaging technology and can be integrated with the new processing steps to be applied for the operation in the fields of biosensors, supercapacitors, electrochemical sensors, etc. We believe that the laser-induced graphene technology introduced in this paper can be easily applied to portable small electronic devices and wearable electronics in the near future.

  • The seasonal variations in weather parameters can significantly affect the atmospheric transmission characteristics. Herein, we propose a novel augmented multiple regression algorithm for the accurate estimation of atmospheric transmittance and solar irradiance over highly localized areas. The algorithm employs 1) adaptive atmospheric model selection using measured meteorological data and 2) multiple linear regression computation augmented with the conventional application of MODerate resolution atmospheric TRANsmission (MODTRAN). In this study, the proposed algorithm was employed to estimate the solar irradiance over Taean coastal area using the 2018 clear days' meteorological data of the area, and the results were compared with the measurement data. The difference between the measured and computed solar irradiance significantly improved from 89.27 ± 48.08σ W/㎡ (with standard MODTRAN) to 21.35 ± 16.54σ W/㎡ (with augmented multiple regression algorithm). The novel method proposed herein can be a useful tool for the accurate estimation of solar irradiance and atmospheric transmission characteristics of highly localized areas with various weather conditions; it can also be used to correct remotely sensed atmospheric data of such areas.

  • This study investigated field data to understand the spatio-temporal distribution of pollinating insects and buckwheat flowers. We set the in-situ observation sites in different locations to get altitude and cropping system distribution data for five years (2016 to 2020) in Korea. Twenty-five different insect species, belonging to 8 orders, were recorded. Over the past five years, species from the orders Diptera and Hymenoptera were the principal visitors. Hymenoptera was mainly represented by honey bees (Apis cerana), while Diptera was represented by bean seed fly (Delia platura) and several other species. Some bees and other Hymenoptera species could, however, act as co-pollinators because of their high relative frequency and activity. Compared with open-field cultivation (conventional), the pollination mediating effect of flies and bees was superior in net house, so the yield was high, and it was also found to be slightly higher in the mixed treatment of flies and bees than in the single treatment. Based on the above results, flies and bees were found to be the most active pollinating insects in buckwheat and it is necessary to actively utilize the selected insects to improve buckwheat productivity. This relationship will be utilized in establishing the system of seed production on pollinating regulation of a primary plant.

  • In addition to the rapid changes in the times caused by the pandemic, the revision of the new curriculum coincides with the change in the proportion of the three elements of learners, society, and subjects that make up the curriculum. In particular, along with the proportion of 'social' in the curriculum, the scope of the word 'educational community' has increased, and the allowable range of curriculum restructuring centered on it has expanded. In order for the intended direction of education to be properly established in the new curriculum, various educational method studies are needed to cultivate newly emerged competencies and literacy. In this study, after selecting the contents and goals of the convergence curriculum based on various criteria for subject selection, the data science program was designed by reconstructing Living Lab's PDIE methodology. As an evaluation factor for this, we tried to analyze the effectiveness of 'creativity', 'problem-solving ability', 'communication ability', 'collaboration ability' among future competencies emphasized in the curriculum. As a result of the study, it was effective in improving creative and communication skills, and this study focuses on verifying the effectiveness of School Living Lab, suggesting the necessity of post-research that expands the application space of research and diversifies the role of educational community subjects.
