  • "Conflict of Interest(COI)" is defined as a situation where a person or an institution is involved in multiple interests, and an interest is against the others. COI in medical researches should well addressed and managed in order not to breach the integrity of the research. Numbers of methods have been introduced to manage the COI. In this article, the concept of COI and its application to medical researches is reviewed and the methods evading COI are introduced.

Structural Integrity of PWR Fuel Assembly for Earthquake

  • In the present study, a method for the dynamic analysis of a reactor core is developed. Peak responses for the motions induced from earthquake are obtained for a core model. The dynamic responses such as fuel assembly shear force, bending moment, axial force and displacement, and spacer grid impact loads are investigated. Prediction of fuel assembly stress during an earthquake requires development of a fuel assembly stress analysis model capable of interfacing with the models and results discussed in the dynamic analysis of a reactor core. This analysis uses beam characteristics which describe the overall fuel assembly response. The stress analysis method and its application for the case of an increased seismic level are also presented.

  • Several kinds of Electrical Wires have been used in Electric Multiple Units(EMU) for the supply of electric power, supervision, and the propagation of control signals. These Electrical Wires must be inspected for safe and stable operation of EMU. The degradation diagnosis to estimate the integrity of Electrical Wires has recently been requested according to the long use of EMU. This paper describes on application of diagnosis method for EMU.

  • PDA를 이용한 무선 네트워크에 대한 활용도가 높아짐에 따라, PDA상에서 이루어지는 무선 네트워크 보안에 대한 관심이 증가하고 있다. PDA 무선 네트워크 보안 문제를 해결하기 위해 많은 연구 및 솔루션 개발이 진행되고 있으나, 이들의 신뢰성을 검증할 만한 시스템 및 연구는 제대로 이루어지지 않고 있다. 본 논문에서는 PDA환경의 무선 네트워크 응용계층 보안모듈들이 무결성 기능을 제대로 제공하는지를 검증 및 관리할 수 있는 시스템을 설계 및 구현하였다.

  • In this study, general outline of P2P(peer to peer) application was analyzed dealing with security attacks and threats on the P2P environment. Information security service was studied to provide secure P2P service under the information threats. This study proposes two methods to provide secure information security service. One is a method to use personal firewall software on the peer. The other is a method to use key distribution protocol for confidentiality and integrity.

  • The root of Astragalus membranaceus Bunge (Leguminosae) has been used in the Korean oriental medicine for strengthening the vital energy. UV irradiation has been suggested as a major cause of photo aging in skin. In order to investigate protective effects against UV induced cellular damage, Astragali Radix was extracted with 70% ethanol and dissolved in DMSO. The protective effect was detected by MTT assay, LDH assay, and Comet assay in immortalized human keratinocyte cell line, HaCaT cell system after UV irradiation. Astragli Radix 70% EtOH extract reduced UV induced cellular damage in cell survival, membrane integrity and DNA damage.

Development of Sperm MTT Assay for Its Application in Boar Semen

  • The MTT assay is one of superior evaluation methods widely used to analyze the viability of metabolically active cell. It can be used to determine the percentage of viable sperm through measurement of the reduction of MTT granules at mitochondria in sperm tail. The purpose of this study is to determine the optimal condition of a simple and easy MTT assay to validate boar sperm viability and compare the accuracy of this test with microscopic examination. The MTT reduction rate for sperm viability were analyzed in microtiter plates (96 well) from 1 hr to 5 hr incubation periods at $37^{\circ}C$ using spectrophotometer (microplate reader) at 550 nm wavelength. The remainder of semen sample was simultaneously examined to compare the correlation of accuracy between MTT assay and other sperm parameters. Those sperm parameters were included the motility, survival rates, membrane integrity, mitochondria activity and acrosome integrity. The OD values of MTT assay (MTT reduction rates) did not greatly change at 1 hr to 5 hr incubation periods in different proportion of live and freeze-killed sperms (dead sperm). The MTT reduction rates or survival rates were decreased according to the different concentration of live and dead sperm. The linear regression at 1 hr and 4 hr incubation periods in sperm MTT assay was y=291.55x-72.176 and y= 180.64x-44.569, respectively. There are high correlation between 1 hr and 4 hr incubation periods (p<0.001). The results of MTT assay and other sperm parameters has a positive correlation (p<0.01 or 0.05). The correlation coefficients for MTT assay was 0.88115 for motility, 0.89868 for survival rates, 0.91722 for membrane integrity and 0.77372 for acrosome integrity, respectively. In conclusion, the MTT assay can be used as a reliable and efficient evaluation method for boar sperm viability. It can be use practical means to evaluate the quality of boar sperm by a fast, inexpensive and easy method.

Rock Bolt Integrity Assessment in Time-Frequency Domain : In-situ Application at Hard Rock Site (유도파를 이용한 시간-주파수 영역 해석을 통한 록볼트 건전도 실험의 경암지반 현장 적용성 평가)

  • As rock bolts become one of the main support systems in tunnels and underground structures, the integrity of the rock bolts affects the safety of these structures. The purpose of this study is the evaluation of rock bolt integrity using wavelet transforms of the guided ultrasonic waves by using transmission test in the field. After several rock bolts with various defect ratios are embedded into a large scale concrete block and rock mass, guided waves are generated by a piezo disk element and measured by an acoustic emission (AE) sensor. The captured signals are analyzed in the time-frequency domain using the wavelet transform based on a Gabor wavelet. Peak values in the time-frequency domain represent the interval of travel time of each echo. The energy velocities of the guided waves increase with an increase in the defect ratio. The suitable curing time for the evergy velocity analysis is proposed by the laboratory test, and in-situ tests are performed in two tunnelling sites to verify the applicability of rock bolt integrity tests performed after proposed curing time. This study proves that time-frequency domain analysis is an effective tool for the evaluation of the rock bolt integrity.

  • Forensic engineering is the application of engineering principles covering the investigation of constructed facilities and systems that fail to perform as intended, causing personal injury or damage to property, environmental, economy etc. In the year 2012, two collapsed accidents of the large scaffolding system in national thermal power station occurred one after another, causing many casualties. In this study, we had performed to investigate the collapsed accident of scaffolding system occurred in the a thermal power station of two accidents. First, the investigation about the collapsed accidents site had performed to understand collapsed state and structures of the scaffolding system. Second, reviewing the materials concerning about the applied weight on the scaffolding system had performed. The applied weight is sum of the weights of the 15 workers, additional materials for coating work and dispersed and loaded shot ball on the foothold etc. the applied weight that calculated exceed more three times than the safe working load. Third, we had confirmed the install state of the materials of the scaffolding system by reviewing the quantity of the materials on the manual and the real system. Last, structural analysis had performed to evaluate structural integrity of the scaffolding system using Ansys. Through a series of this processes, the definite accidents causes of the collapsed scaffolding system revealed. Through these studies, the collapse accident that may occur in the scaffolding system in thermal power station can be minimized by performing specialized and systematic investigation on the accidents in terms of Forensic engineering.

Design of a 2MW Blade for Wind Turbine and Uni-Directional Fluid Structure Interaction Simulation (2 MW급 풍력터빈 블레이드 설계 및 단방향 유체-구조연성해석)

  • The purposes of this study are to evaluate the power performance through CFD analysis and structural integrity through uni-directional FSI analysis in aerodynamic design and structure design of wind turbine blade. The blade was designed to generate the power of 2MW under the rated wind speed of 11 m/s, consisting of NACA 6 series, DU series and FFA series airfoil. The inside section of the blade was designed into D-spar structure and circular stiffener was placed to reinforce the structural strength in the part of hub. CFD analysis with the application of transitional turbulence model was performed to evaluate the power performance of blade according to the change of TSR and 2.024MW resulted under the condition of rated wind speed. TSR of 9 produced the maximum power coefficient and in this case, Cp was 0.494. This study applied uni-directional FSI analysis for more precise evaluation of structural integrity of blade, and the results of fiber failure, inter fiber failure and eigenvalue buckling analysis were evaluated, respectively. For the evaluation, Puck's failure criteria was applied and the result showed that fiber failure and inter fiber failure did not occur under every possible condition of the analysis. As a result, power performance and structural integrity of 2 MW blade designed in this study turned out to satisfy the initial design goals.
