  • We interviewed and surveyed parents of 3 to 6-year-old boys in order to determine designs for indoor apparel that appealed to toddlers. In addition, on the basis of the behavioral characteristics of such boys, improvements in the development of indoor apparels were suggested. Parents preferred indoor apparels because it could be worn as underwear when the kid is outdoors and as outerwear when indoors. These apparels were popular with toddlers. Therefore, indoor apparel that gives the impression of outerwear while performing the function of underwear was designed. Underwear fabric was used, but outerwear apparel design was partially adopted. In order to improve the activity, fabric that could be stretched in any direction was used for the sleeves and pant legs, while organic fabric with soft texture was used for the trunk part of the apparel. Dark-colored material was used for the chest and elbow parts of the clothes in order to prevent contamination in these parts. In particular, a bib was used to prevent contamination in the chest part. Given that toddlers engage in many activities, the fabric needed to be durable, so this led to thick materials being used for the knee part. As certain parents complained about the short length for tops, we increased the length of the tops by 5cm. In the survey items that investigated overall wearability, ease, and suitability for toddlers' activities, the test apparel obtained a higher score than existing apparel did. This indicates that the overall suitability of the newly designed apparel was improved.

  • Unwanted effects of electrostatic phenomena occur in various industries. Electrostatic problems originating from the human body in flammable atmospheres in the industry are especially concerning. A substantial volume of experimental data on the electrostatic charging voltages created on the human body owing to the rubbing of apparel were generated and reviewed during this study. The data were reviewed to determine whether the resultant charging levels of the human body are hazardous in flammable atmospheres. This study was conducted under several conditions, such as different fiber types used in apparel, shoe types, and relative humidities (RHs). The following conclusions were drawn in this study. ① The electrostatic charging levels of the human body owing to the rubbing of apparel increase with the increase in the surface resistances of apparel; however, the electrostatic charging levels may be different depending on the condition of the cloth surface. ② The discharging energy of 1.98-18.5 [mJ] from the human body exceeds the minimum ignition energy of most flammable materials, when removing an overcoat made of polyester, cotton and wool under severe conditions such as wearing height-raising shoes for men. ③ When removing antistatic apparel, the maximum discharging energy of 0.128 mJ from the human body is dangerous if the minimum ignition energy of the flammable material is between 10-5-10-4 [J] Grade; however, a minimum ignition energy of 10-3 J Grade of the flammable material is considered safe. ④ While wearing antistatic shoes, the electrostatic charging voltage generated in the human body when removing an overcoat is 30 V; therefore, wearing such shoes is a suitable countermeasure when handling flammable materials. However, the antistatic abilities of shoes reduce when thick socks are worn. ⑤ As RH increases, the electrostatic charging levels of the human body decrease. ⑥ The electrostatic charging levels of the human body from removing a cotton overcoat can ignite the majority of flammable materials when RH is less than 30% under severe conditions such as wearing height-raising shoes for men.

  • Apparel goods are classified by many criteria for ease of merchandising implementation. Fashion and basic goods are also an oucome oi classification. Previous studies pnvide some criteria by which apparel products can be classified into fushion and basic goods. Among those ciiteria, seasonality, fashionability, clothing types, complexity in pnduction, simplicity of style, pioducuon volume, degree of style change by season, could be listed. This study, first explored how apparel merchandisers and designers define fashion and basic goods in relation with those criteria. Definitions of fashion and basic goods were explored in terms of design elements (i.e., style, color, material), production volume, sales ratio, proportion in product assortment, and contribution to profit. The study adopted a qualitative approach by use of eighteen infepth interviews with menhandisers and designers. Six were from women's wear brand, Seven from men's wear brand, and 5 from casual wear brand. All the interviewees agreed that they are using the classification of basic vs. fashion goods. However, they are using diverse terms to indicate the basic and fashion goods. The interviewees defined each group based on its contribution to total sales or profit complexity in design, production volume, and style change by season. Basic goods had a higher level of production quantity, contribute more to profit simpler design, and less style change by season than fashion goods.

  • In this article, the authors studied the characteristics of Costumes used in the Chung Won(中原) District through Shymui(沈衣) and Dopo(道袍) which was widely used as Confucian traditional costume. It was concluded that the costumes in the Chung Won district are very similar to those of Seoul area. The reason for the similarity was due, in addition to nearness to Seoul, to the mixed cultural background during Sam Kuk(三國) dynasty and due to the influence of many returned scholars who are accustomed to the life of ruling class while in Government position in Seoul during Lee Dynasty(李朝). The traditional characteristics of Dopo in Chung Won District also is, unlike other area, very similar to Seoul. Dopo in An Dong(安東) and Kang Nung(江陵) Districts have no parting line in the back while that of Seoul area had parting line. The material used for the Dopo in An Dong area was mainly Sambae and in Seoul Moshi or Myung Ju was the major material for the normal occasion and Sambae was used for the Dopo for funerals.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the middle-aged British women's apparel purchase behavior. The results of this study can be used to present the tendency of Korean middle-aged women's apparel purchase behavior when they become the old-aged by comparing and analyzing the British women's purchase behavior. We found that they prefer to choose and purchase their clothes by their own decision-making and search for actively the new brands for old age. Strong willingness was showed that their level of consumption amounts for clothing would be the same level between middle-aged and old-aged. It was also presented that they like to see a old-aged fashion model for fashion advertisement rather than a younger one and prefer to use the expression of 'mature' rather than a stereotypical expression such as a silver, gray and gold. The segmentation of fashion market by age can not be simply standardized. We expect that the propensity for clothing purchase behavior pattern of middle-aged women will not be changed and keep the same tendency by the time of their old-aged. We expect that this research results can be used as a basic material for another study and setting up the product developments and marketing strategies.

  • The subjects of this study were middle-aged women in their 40s$\sim$50s and older women aged 60 and over who were living in Seoul and Kyonggi-do, Korea. Through studying the participants' responses to the questions regarding the attributes of apparel quality in terms of the levels of satisfaction and importance, the target consumers' demand has been studied. And, they are applied to a QFD Matrix, to find out the relationship between the attributes of product quality and the guidelines of clothing design. For this study, apparel product quality is composed of five parameters: practicality, aesthetics, brand image, ease of care and fit. For the parameters of apparel product quality, the result of this study show that product improvements are needed in fit, aesthetics and practicality(in order of importance). The level of satisfaction(how satisfied consumer feels) was marked higher in brand image than that of importance(how important it is). To review demands for the apparel product attributes of formal suits for middle-aged and older women, the priority of these attributes through QFD Matrix that shows the relationship between the attributes and dress elements emphasized by designers has been examined. Material was the most important design element in designing formal suits. The shape of the pants was the second because the harmony between the jacket and the pants is important in formal suits. These were followed by trim and color tone of the jacket.
