Purpose: The etiology of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) is complex and multifactorial including trauma, anatomical, pathophysiological, social and psychological factors. Psychological factors can induce or sustain TMDs in various ways. And psychological problems, such as anxiety and depression can be occurred due to TMDs. Therefore, evaluation of psychological factors in patients with TMDs is important. Although disc displacement (DD) is crucial in clinical situation, most of studies have focused on the relationship of psychosocial factors and myofascial pain. And also, Subtypes of DD can cause different degrees of discomfort, it is necessary to evaluate the psychological states of the patients according to the subtype. The Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale (HADS) is one of the self-report questionnaire to evaluate the psychological factors. HADS-Anxiety (HADS-A) and HADS-Depression (HADS-D) are assessed through 14 questions. The purpose of this study was to evaluate anxiety and depression assessed by HADS in patients diagnosed with subtypes of DD according to diagnostic criteria for TMDs. Methods: Four hundred thirty nine patients were diagnosed as one of the subtypes of DD. One hundred fourty nine subjects with no symptoms were set as control groups. All of them answered the HADS for Koreans. The cut-off score for anxiety and depression was set a score of 8. The chi-square test was performed to evaluate association between DD and anxiety/depression. Results: There was a significant difference in HADS-D between five groups (p<0.01). However, there was no significant difference in HADS-A. All the DD groups showed a significant difference in HADS-D compared with the control group except the DD without reduction without limited opening group. The DD without reduction with limited opening group showed the highest rates in HADS-D (40.4%). Conclusions: Based on the above results, it is necessary to consider the depression in treatment of the patients with DDs.
Objectives : We performed this '2006 Korean Anxiety Research' to understand the actual state about Korean anxiety and get the basic data for mental health promotion. Methods : Semistructured questionnaire and Beck Anxiety Inventory -Korean version (BAI) were administered to total 1,000 adults (20-69 years old 501 male & 499 female adults living in Seoul and 5 metropolitan cities in Korea) on March 20th~31st, 2006. Results : Anxious subjects by the total score of BAI was 3.3%. But the responders the item 'I am in the anxious state' was 25% among total subjects. 6% (n=59) among total subjects were the responders experienced the anxiety requiring usually the counselling or treatment. The frequency of their anxiety was most commonly 1 to 2 times/month. The main causes of their anxiety were 'their health problems or illness', 'economic difficulty', 'interpersonal conflicts'. But 'help by health professional' among their usual anxiety reduction methods' was only 15% among them. Only 19% among them were under the treatment of anxiety. Only 27% among 48 subjects not under the treatment of anxiety had a desire for the anxiety treatment in the near future. Conclusion : Some people in the anxious state impairing their daily lives were not yet under the treatment. And most of them had no desire for the anxiety treatment. Therefore we will systematically plan the further health education on the anxiety-related problems for the Korean mental health promotion and the quality of life.
This study investigated the effect of listening to music on the reduction of public speech anxiety among middle-school female students. The subjects were 66 female first graders, 33 of the experimental and another 33 of the control group selected from two classes of C middle school in Chonan city. The level of anxiety (SAS) was rated by the subjects through self-report and the speech behavior (SBES) of the subjects were evaluated by a teacher before, a week after and two weeks after the speech trials. 64 pieces of music were selected based on the music therapy-related references. After 23 out of 64 pieces were selected for the preliminary experiment and 7 pieces as having positive effects through evaluating those 23 pieces in the other class in the same gaders were finally selected. Subjects listened to music for 40 min two times a day for two weeks with a cassette player in the classroom. The result yielded the followings: 1) Self-reported public speech anxiety decreased both in the experimental and control groups. However, there found more decrease in the music-listening group than in the non-listening music group. 2) The public speech behavior improved both in the experimental and control groups with on difference between the two groups. This suggests a possibility that SBES may not be a accurate measure to evaluate the speech anxiety. We conclude that two-week listening to music has the effect reduction on speech anxiety.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of meditation programs for stress reduction in the elderly. Meditation program for elderly stress reduction were made based on K-MBSR program and kriya yoga. Study was to examined the effectiveness of meditation on stress reduction in the elderly. The program measured the effectiveness of the stress reduction techniques on stress response, depression, anxiety, and quality of life throughout pre-post testing in both the meditation group and the control group. The result indicated that. Stress, depression and anxiety decreased and QOL increased in meditation group. The results of study 1 indicate that meditation program for elderly stress reduction effects on reducing stress and increasing quality of life. These results discussed in connection with cure mechanism for further research.
This study examined children's death anxiety by religion, previous death experience and the effectiveness of a death education program. Half of the subjects 60 nine-year-old elementary school subjects were assigned to the experimental group and half were assigned to the control group. The 6-week death education program for the experimental group included literature, role play, and discussion. A questionnaire and death anxiety scale for children were administered to all subjects. After the educational program, there was a significant difference in death anxiety scores, between the experimental and control groups. However, children's religion and previous experience with death had no significant relationship to their death anxiety or effectiveness of the death education program.

The study was done to analyze the effects of aroma inhalation method on preoperative anxiety of upper and lower surgical patients. The research design was a nonequivalent control group non-synchronized design. The subjects were a total 60 patients of each group 30 patients that were operated on under general anesthesia for upper and lower limbs surgery. The tool of the Amsterdam preoperative anxiety information scale(APAIS), systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and pulse rate levels was measured the day before surgery. The data were analyzed by the $x^2$ test Fisher's exact test, paird t-test, and the independent t-test using SPSS 20.0. Study result indicated that Lavender aroma therapy had the effect on reduction of anxiety before surgery and reduction of blood pressure, and pulse rate levels. Therefore, the study result could be used as a scientifical data that can be applied to the nursing interventions that use the aroma inhalation method and contributing to development of the holistic nursing care.
The aim of the present study was to develop a cognitive-behavioral group therapy program for social anxiety in Korean adolescents and to examine its efficacy through pre-, post- and 2-year follow-up tests. The program included cognitive restructuring, exposure training and social skills training. KSAS-A and SASC-R were administered to 588 1st grade middle-school female students to assess their social anxiety levels. On the basis of double criteria procedure(top 10% scores on both scales), 59 students were selected initially. Individuals currently receiving clinical treatment were excluded. Finally, 40 students were selected and randomly assigned to either a treatment group or a wait-list control group. The program consisted of 12 weekly sessions, approximately 1.5-2 hours in duration. Whereas pre- and post-tests were administered to both groups, follow-up tests were administered to the treatment group only. The collected data were statistically analyzed through independent t-test and paired t-test. The results of the study were as follows: 1) At post-test students in the treatment group showed a very significant reduction in social anxiety and fear of negative evaluation by others in comparison with those in the wait-list group. 2) At post-test students in the treatment group showed a significant reduction in negative automatic thoughts in comparison with those in the wait-list group. 3) At post-test students in the treatment group showed a significant improvement in overall social skills in comparison with those in the wait-list group. 4) At post-test students in the wait-list group showed a significant increase in both social anxiety and negative automatic thoughts in comparison with those in the treatment group. 5) At 3-month, 1-year and 2-year follow-ups, the program's effectiveness was maintained.
Objectives: The purpose of this systematic review was to investigate the clinical effects of neurofeedback training on reducing anxiety. Methods: Eight databases were used to extract clinical reports on neurofeedback intervention for anxiety reduction published until 2016. We analyzed the characteristics of selected studies and evaluated biases using the Risk of Bias (RoB) assessment. Results: A total of 22 clinical trials were extracted for the analysis. The risk of bias in most studies was high or unclear. The Chinese Classification of Mental Disorders-3 (CCMD-3) was the most frequently used diagnostic criteria, the Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety (HAMA) was the most frequently used assessment tool, and the alpha wave activity increase, sensorimotor rhythm (SMR), and theta wave training were the most frequently used intervention methods. All papers showed a statistically significant decrease of anxiety symptoms; however, significant adverse events were not reported. Conclusions: Neurofeedback intervention might be beneficial for reducing anxiety. However, the quality of the studies used in the analysis was low, and the heterogeneity of the population and interventions was revealed. Therefore, more scientifically designed clinical studies regarding neurofeedback training are required.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare the levels of anxiety, depression, and quality of life (QOL) among kidney or liver transplant candidates and recipients. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive design was utilized. The 160 subjects were recruited and assigned to three different conditions: awaiting transplant group; post-transplantation (TPL) group within less than one year of surgery; and post-TPL group with one year and no more than two years post surgery. The levels of anxiety and depression were measured by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. The level of quality of life was measured by the Medical Outcomes Study Short Form-36 version 2. Results: The anxiety score was significantly higher in the waiting group compared with the 1~2 years post TPL group. The depression score was significantly higher in the waiting group compared with the post TPL groups. The QOL was significantly lower in the waiting group compared with the post TPL groups. Conclusion: Our results show a high prevalence of anxiety and depression and a marked reduction in the QOL in transplant candidates compared to the recipients. This study indicates that the group waiting for transplants may have unmet needs during that time period. Health professionals should be encouraged to attend to the psychological distress of the transplant candidates in order to improve their quality of life.
Sulfites are used as food preservatives and excessive sulfite might disturb the body systems including the brain. Curcumin shows protective effects on the nervous system toxicity. The present study aimed to evaluate the protective role of curcumin in sulfite-induced anxiety in rats. Male rats were divided into five groups. The rats in groups I to V received distilled water (vehicle of sulfite, 1 mL/d), olive oil (vehicle of curcumin, 1 mL/d), curcumin (100 mg/kg/d), sulfite (25 mg/kg/d), and sulfite+curcumin, respectively, by daily gastric gavage for 8 weeks. At the end of 8 weeks the rats were tested in the elevated plus-maze for anxiety. The results showed that concomitant treatment of curcumin during sulfite consumption prevented the reduction of the time spent in the open arm and entrance to the open arm (the indexes of anxiety). Besides, an increase was found in motor activity of the rats in the sulfite+curcumin group compared to the sulfite-treated animals. Exposure of sulfite in rats can induce anxiety, and curcumin can act as an anti-anxiety agent.
