  • According to the related references, up to now the systematic studies on the ants from Mt. Moak have not been professionally surveyed yet. On order to classify the the ants from Mt. Moak, authors had collected the ants in this area from Octorber, 1993 to June, 1995. Examining all the collections, 44 species of 23 genera of 17 tribes under 3 subfamilies were identified.

  • Bacterial symbionts are common across insects, including ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae). Reproduction-manipulating endosymbionts, such as Wolbachia, Spiroplasma, Rickettsia, and Cardinium, are closely associated with many aspects of host-insect life. In addition, phage WO plays an essential role in the phenotypic effects of Wolbachia. Although endosymbionts are possible biological control agents, there is a lack of knowledge of their rate of infection of ants in Korea. We tested a range of Korean ant species for the presence of Wolbachia, Spiroplasma, Rickettsia, Cardinium, and phage WO by extracting DNA from the ants and using specific primer sets to test the status of infections. In addition, the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) gene of the host ants was amplified to confirm the molecular identification and phylogenetic relationship between the hosts. We found that infection with Wolbachia (29.6% of species) is relatively common when compared with that of other endosymbionts. Only one species was infected with Spiroplasma. Infection with Rickettsia and Cardinium was not detected in the examined ants. Most Wolbachia in ants were infected with phage WO. Although the phenotypic effects of endosymbionts in ants are still unknown, this first survey of endosymbionts in Korea is the first step toward the use of reproduction-manipulating endosymbionts.

  • To clarify the ants fauna in Chollabukdo, field survey was carried out for about 10 years from 1986 to 1995. As a result, 1,699 clonies were collected and identified. These clonies were composed of 76 species belonging to the 31 genera of 5 subfamilies. The list of ants in Chollabukdo was prepared with them involving a subfamily, 6 genera and 18 species newly recorded from Chollabukdo. In NSC analysis between areas, zones and clonies respectively, all 16 areas were continuous expect Bangchukdo. In block analysis of ant distribution. 28 species were found only in mountain-zone and 4 species in island-zone. Among 5 subfamilies distributied in Chollabukdo, Myrmicinae is the most abundant, but Cerapacinae is the oppisite. The Lasius of Formicinae is the most abundant genus among 31 genera investigated.

  • The ants found in Chindo Island were investigated from July to October, 1994. We were interested in the ant fauna of this island because it is one of larger islands of Korea and being well supplied with subterranean water, quite different for mother islands in this respect. Collections were examined from 11 sites of Chindo Is. , of which 21 species of 15 genera under 4 subfamilies are classified and reported.

  • To clarify the ants fauna in 10 islands, Chollanam-do, field survery was carried out from 1986 to 1991. As a result, 740 colonies were collected in 31 survey areas. These colonies were composed on 54 species belonging to the 30 genera of 4 subfamilies. Kyidris mutica Brown and Epitritus hexamerus Brown collected in Taehuksan Is. and Soan Is. respectively were recorded for the first time from Korea. The cluster analysis of faunal similarity using Nomura-Simpson's Coefficient(NSC) showed that the ant communities between the island were continuous in similarities.

  • For the study of ant fauna in Mt. Kyeryongsan, we selected three areas and collected 317 colonies nine times from 1986 to 1990. The communities of ants were composed of 3 subfamilies, 23 genera and 45 species. Among them, Solenopsis sp. was an unrecorded species in Korea. The number of ant species distributed in each area was almost the same, and the species distributed uniformly in the nine subareas were Paratrechina flavipes and Aphaenogaster japonica. The number of species collected in the only one subarea were ten, and six among them were collected in the area of Sinwonsa temple, the westward slope. It is remarkable that Camponotus tokioensis, which is known to be distributed only in the island and coast so far, is found to be distributed in the area of Sinwonsa temple as well.

  • The present study is aimed to evaluate forest health in a fragmented urban forest using characteristics of insect communities. Ants (Formicidae) and ground beetles (Carabidae) surveyed by pitfall trap method in the Hongneung forest located in the urban area of Seoul were compared with those in the Gwangneung forest. The Gwangneung forest is supposed to be health due to its high biodiversity and well-conserved nature. Ants of the Hongneung forest was much more abundant compared with those of the Gwangneung forest. However, ground beetles showed the opposite patterns; much more abundant in the Gwangneung forest than in the Hongneung forest. Species richness was higher in the Gwangneung forest than in the Hongneung forest, but species diversity was higher in the Hongneung forest. In the Hongneung forest, forest specialist species and generalist species were balanced, whereas few forest specialists dominated in the Gwangneung forest. This dominance decreased species diversity in those Gwangneung forest. Thus, characteristics of insect community in the Hongneung forest were greatly different with those in the Gwangneung forest.
