We previously reported the protein isolated from Coptidis Rhizoma (CRP), which has antifungal activity against a fungal pathogen, Candida albicans. In the current study, we investigated what portion in the CRP is responsible for the antifungal activity. For the investigation, the CRP was fractionated on a Shepadex G-50 column. Data resulting from the fractionation, seven fractions were obtained. Fractions (Fr.) I, II, and III eluted initially from the column showed no inhibitory effect on the growth of C. albicans, whereas Fr. IV, V, and VI eluted later revealed inhibition of the growth, and Fr. IV and VI showed potent antifungal activity by broth susceptibility analysis. However, Fr. VI was contained in the CRP more than Fr. IV, which led us to select the VI for the following experiments. In a murine model of a subcutaneous candidiasis caused by C. albicans, the Fr. VI displayed a therapeutic effect on nude mice pretreated with anti-neutrophil monoclonal antibody (RB68C5) and then infected subcutaneously with live C. albicans. At day 16, these mice were healed almost up to 78% of the infected area when compared to infected area of control nude mice that received diluent (Dulbecco's Phosphate-Buffered Saline; DPBS), instead of the Fr. VI (P<0.01). The Fr. VI blocked hyphal formation from blastoconidial form of C. albicans (P<0.01), which might prevent penetration of hyphae to the deeper site of skin and thus helps the healing. In the ionic strength test, the effect of Fr. was influenced by $Ca^{2+}$ ion just like other known antimicrobial peptides, but the influence was affected at an extremely high concentration such as 500 mM. Thus, such ion-concentration is considered to be meaningless in the clinical situation. Considering all data together, Coptidis Rhizoma is appeared to produce an antimicrobial peptide that has therapeutic effect on subcutaneous infection caused by C. albicans.

Composite films of zinc calcium alginate were prepared by a film maker from 7 wt% sodium alginate solution and then they solidified into 3, 5 wt% content $ZnCl_2$, $CaCl_2$ solution followed by washing and drying at room temperature. The characteristics were measured with several methods (antimicrobial activity, water solubility, swelling ratio and viscosity, SEM, EDS) and the film properties were investigated. Composite films of zinc calcium alginate showed an increase in the water resistance by increasing $ZnCl_2$ and $CaCl_2$ content and the antimicrobial test showed that the calcium alginate as well as zinc alginate films result in excellent antimicrobial activity in the two strains, Staphylococcus and Escherichia coli. The results show the possible improvement of the physical properties of composite films.

The purpose of this study was to investigate prevalence and antimicrobial resistance patterns of Campylobacter spp. from duck feces in northern area of the Gyeongnam province, Korea. Samples of 121 duck feces were taken from April to December 2014 for this survey. Samples were examined by bacteria isolation and reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction assay for detection of Campylobacter spp. Campylobacter were isolated in 37 samples (30.6%). Among these samples, C. jejuni and C. coli were isolated in 35 samples and 2 samples, respectively. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) test is performed to investigate antimicrobial resistance patterns of Campylobacter spp. C. jejuni were resistant to ciprofloxacin (85.7%), nalidixic acid(82.9%), tetracycline (77.1%), gentamicin (57.1%), azithromycin (40.0%), clindamycin (34.3%), erythromycin (22.9%), and florfenicol (8.6%). These data support a database of pollution and antimicrobial resistance of Campylobacter spp. from duck feces and provide a basic information of reducing the secondary damage of antibiotic misuse.

This study was performed to evaluate the rodent repellency and antimicrobial activity of natural oils. Thirteen natural essential oils were evaluated for repellent efficacy against rodent feed intake suppression activity. Salvia sclarea (sage), Cinnamomum zeylanicum (cinnamon) Cymbopogon citratus (lemon grass), and Syzygium aromaticum (clove) showed the best repellent efficacy among tested natural oils. Antimicrobial activity against Gram-negative (four strains) and Gram-positive (four strains) bacteria were evaluated using four natural oils, which showed high efficacy on the rodent repellent test. Syzygium aromaticum showed antimicrobial activity against all tested bacteria and Cymbopogon citratus, Cinnamonum zeylanicum, and Salvia sclarea showed antimicrobial activity against some tested bacteria.
Recently, silver has been applied to various fields due to antimicrobial property and high conductivity. We manufactured high-performance ophthalmic material containing silver which could protect eye from environmental factors. We mixed $AgNO_3$ with conventional contact lens material. And then we copolymerized at 70 ${^{\circ}C}$ for 40 minutes under water bath, and estimated antimicrobial activity and physical properties. We used solid culture and liquid culture medium for antimicrobial test. The results of contact lens containing silver showed good antibiosis. In case of physical properties, the results showed 32.35%(water content) and 88.34% (visible transmittance) for each. We judged that we made the copolymer with antimicrobial and physical properties which is suitable for conventional contact lens.
Zinc alginate films were prepared by a film maker from sodium alginate solutions of different weight ratios and then they solidified into 3 wt% content $ZnCl_2$ coagulation solution and washed and dried at a $60^{\circ}C$ oven for 20 min. The characteristics were measured by several methods (antimicrobial activity, viscosity, FTIR, TGA, SEM, EDS, contact angle, tensile strength and solubility) and the film properties were investigated. The antimicrobial test showed that the zinc alginate films result in excellent antimicrobial activity in the two strains (Klebsiella pneumonia, Staphylococcus). The surface of zinc alginate film from the solution of 9 wt% sodium alginate showed more uniform shape than any other films and the cross-section were hard and rough when the films were well-solidified by the $ZnCl_2$ solution. The tensile strength of zinc alginate films increased along with the concentration of sodium alginate solution due to the cross-linking, and the initial thermal decomposition temperature increased gradually.
We investigated the natural antimicrobial activities of Capsella bursa-pastoris water, methanol, and ethanol extracts. Antimicrobial activities of these extracts and sodium benzoate on Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli were compared. The inhibition zone diameters of the methanol and ethanol extracts of Capsella bursa-pastoris were 13-20 mm and 12-20 mm, respectively, which were larger than those of sodium benzoate (11-15 mm). The minimum inhibitory concentrations of Capsella bursa-pastoris methanol and ethanol extracts were 12.5-20 mg/mL. These results indicate that Capsella bursa-pastoris methanol and ethanol extracts can be used as natural antimicrobial agents.
Microbial wound infection prolonged the hospitalization and increase the cost for wound management. Silver is commonly used as antimicrobial wound dressing. However, it causes several adverse side effects. Hence, this study was aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial efficiency of Swietenia macrophylla seed extract on clinical wound pathogens. Besides, the bioactive constituents of the seed extract were also determined. S. macrophylla seeds were extracted with methanol by maceration method. The seed extract inhibited 5 test bacteria and 1 yeast on disc diffusion assay. The antibacterial activity was broad spectrum, as the extract inhibited both Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. On kill curve analysis, the antibacterial activity of the seed extract was concentration-dependent, the increase of extract concentration resulted in more reduction of bacterial growth. The extract also caused 99.9% growth reduction of Bacillus subtilis relative to control. A total of 21 compounds were detected in gas chromatography- mass spectrometry analysis. The predominant compounds present in the extract were oleic acid (18.56%) and linoleic acid (17.72%). In conclusion, the methanolic extract of S. macrophylla seeds exhibited significant antimicrobial activity on clinical wound pathogens. Further investigations should be conducted to purify other bioactive compounds from the seeds of S. macrophylla.

Jellyfish is an emerging aquaculture species, farmed for Oriental cuisines and nutraceutical ingredients. This study aimed to examine antioxidative and antimicrobial potentials of various fractions of the jellyfish, Acromitus hardenbergi. The bell and oral arms of the jellyfish were sequentially extracted with petroleum ether (PE), dichloromethane (DCM), chloroform (CHCl3), methanol (MeOH), and water (H2O) to extract its bioactive in an increasing polarity gradient. Test fractions were assayed for antiradical activities using electron spin resonance spectrometry, β-carotene-linoleate model and Folin-Ciocalteu assay; and antimicrobial activity against 2 Gram-negative bacteria, 4 Gram-positive bacteria and 2 fungal species using the disc diffusion assay. All fractions were also subjected to Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) analysis to identify types of functional groups present. It was found that the hydrophilic extracts (H2O fractions) possessed the most effective radical scavenging activity (p < 0.05) while the lipophilic extracts (PE fractions) the most active antimicrobial activity, especially against Gram-positive bacteria (p < 0.05). Total oxidation substrates content was found to be highest in the PE fractions of jellyfish bell and oral arms (p < 0.05). FTIR data showed that the H2O and MeOH fractions contains similar functional groups including -OH, -C=O, -N-H and -S=O groups, while the PE, DCM, and CHCl3 fractions, the -CH3, -COOH groups. This study showed that A. hardenbergi contains antioxidants and antimicrobials, thereby supporting the traditional claim of the jellyfish as an anti-aging and health-promoting functional food. Bioassay-guided fractionation approach serves as a critical milestone for the strategic screening, purification, and elucidation of therapeutically significant actives from jellyfish.

Background: Streptococcus dysgalactiae subspecies equisimilis (SDSE) acts as an etiological agent for lameness, neurological signs, and high mortality in pigs. Despite its importance in pig industries and zoonotic potential, little is known about the effects of this pathogen. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the molecular characteristics and antimicrobial resistance of SDSE strains isolated from diseased pigs. Methods: A total 11 SDSE isolates were obtained from diseased pigs. Bacterial identification, PCR for virulence genes, emm typing, and antimicrobial resistance genes, multilocus sequence typing, and antimicrobial susceptibility test were performed. Results: Nine isolates were from piglets, and 8 showed lameness, sudden death, or neurological signs. The isolates were PCR-positive for sla (100%), sagA (100%), and scpA (45.5%), and only 1 isolate amplified the emm gene (stL2764). Eight different sequence types were detected, categorized into 2 clonal complexes and 4 singletons. All the isolates in this study were included in a small cluster, which also contained other strains derived from humans and horses. The minimum inhibitory concentrations for the tested beta-lactams were low, while those for macrolides, tetracyclines, and fluoroquinolones were relatively high. PCR analysis of the macrolide and tetracycline resistance genes demonstrated that the isolates carried erm(B) (18.2%, n = 2), mef(A/E) (9.1%, n = 1), tet(M) (18.2%, n = 2), and tet(O) (90.2%, n = 10). Two isolates presented a mutation in parC, which is associated with fluoroquinolone resistance. Conclusion: This study provided insight into swine-derived SDSE, as it is related to veterinary medicine, and elucidated its zoonotic potential, in the context of molecular epidemiology and antimicrobial resistance in public health.
