  • The purpose of this study is to develop multifunctional fibers by sticking cinnamon microcapsules on cotton knit. The prepolymer was made from urea-formaldehyde for usage of wall materials of microcapsules. The parameters for adoptable condition are 5000rpm of agitation speed, 1% of dispersions concentration according to the observation with SEM and particle analyzer. The Antimicrobial activity of cotton knit treated with capsule was increased greatly and maintained on the laundering cycle.

  • To obtain the basic data of the effect of antimicrobic finishing on chrome-tanned leather for apparel, it was studied that the specimens given from each step of manufacturing process, that is, steps before and after neutralization and after fixation were treated with Si-QAC as a antimicrobic finishing agent, and the antimicrobic activity was evaluated. The results were as follows: 1. The bacterial reduction of the specimens finished antimicrobically were 100% and 94.4% before and after neutralization respectively, however, the specimens carried out successive process after antimicrobic finishing exhibited the reduction of 16.5% and 14.8%. It was assumed that the antimicrobic agent was washed off by the successive process. 2. When the antimicrobic finishing was carried out on the specimens after fixation the bacterial reduction was 95.0% and then the specimen carried out successive process was 97.3%. This result indicates that antimicrobic finishing on the leather would be given after fixation rather than before and after neutralization.

  • To improve the antimicrobial activity and crease resistance of Korean traditional Hansan ramie fabrics, partially saponified polyethylene(PPS) was used as a softening water repellent agent and 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl dimethyl octadecyl ammonium chloride(QAC) as a antimicrobial agent. The antimicrobial activity was effective by treatments of PPS, QAC and PPS/QAC for shake flask test. For the halo test, PPS/QAC showed good antimicrobial activity. It was found that the desirable composition of H$_{2}$O/PPS/QAC is 98/1/1 for improving the antimicrobial activity and crease resistance of the fabrics.

  • Sulfadiazine and silver sulfadiazine are well-known bactericidal agent routinely used clinical settings. Antimicrobial acid dyes were synthesized by introducing sulfadiazine or silver sulfadiazine and applied on nylon fabric. The Chemical Structure of the Synthesized dyes was identified by HPLC-mass. The dyeability of synthesized acid dyes for nylon fabric was similar to commercial acid dyes. Resistance to washing, rubbing and lightfastness were good. Nylon fabrics dyed with synthesized acid dyes had good antimicrobial properties. Durable antimicrobial properties after 20 times washing have shown good result that reduction ratio of colonies, is 99.9 %. Mixed dyeing were carried out using commercial acid dyes(leveling type) and synthesized dyes. The mixed dyeings have also shown good antimicrobial properties.

  • Cotton fabric was treated with chitosan by pad-dry(-cure) method to impart antimicrobial properties. Four chitosans of different degree of deacetylation (DAC: 65~95%) with similar molecular weight(MW: ca. 50, 000) and one chitosan oligomer(MW 1, 800, DAC 86%) were used. In order to improve the durability to laundering of antimicrobial activity for the fabrics treated with chitosan oligomer, crosslinker or binder was included in the finishing formulation. Antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Proteus vulgaris was evaluated by the Shake Flask Method. The treated fabrics were laundered up to 20 times according to AATCC Test Method 60-1986 or JIS 0217-104 and antimicrobial activity of the laundered fabrics was evaluated. The antimicrobial activity was increased with the increase of concentration and degree of deacetylation of chitosan. And the cured fabrics showed better durability to laundering than the not-cured fabrics according to AATCC Test Method 60-1986. Crosslinker and binder decreased antimicrobial according of the fabrics treated with chitosan oligomer and were not effective to improve the durability to laundering according to JIS 0217-104. • The antimicrobial activities of the copolymer of N,N'-dimethyl- N,N'-diallyl ammonium chloride(DMDAAC) and diallyl amino(DA) were investigated. The copolymer of DMDAAC and DA was prepared by free radical Polymerization through an intra-intermolecular propagation mechanism ie, cyclopolymerization. The copolymer was, then, reacted with cyanuric chloride for reactivity with hydroxyl group of cellulose. Cotton fabrics were finished by synthesized polymer, and their antimicrobial activities and fastness to launderings were tested. Dichlorotriazinyl DMDAAC-DA copolymer has MIC value of 1ppm against S. aureus and 10ppm against K pneumoniae. The antimicrobial fastness of the finished cotton to launderings were good enough to show colony reduction above 70% against S. aureus and K pneumoniae after 50 repeated laundering in anionic commercial detergent. Optimum treatment concentrations of the polymer were 0.5% in cold pad-batch method, and 0.1% in pad-dry method.

  • The antimicrobial activities of the copolymer of N,N'-dimethyl-N,N'-diallyl ammonium chloride (DMDAAC) and acrylamide(AA) were investigated. A series of copolymers with various ratios of DMDAAC and AA were prepared by free radical initiation via an intra-intermolecular propagation mechanism, ie, cyclopolymerization, and the antimicrobial activities of the prepared copolymers were measured by minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC) test. The copolymers were, then, methylolated under basic condition for reactivity with hydroxyl group of cellulose. Both antimicrobial activity and fastness to laundering of the cotton fabrics finished using the methylolated copolymers were evaluated. From the results it was shown that the copolymers with different ratios of DMDAAC and AA have MIC values in the range of 1∼100ppm. As the ratio of AA in the copolymers increases, the anitmicrobial activity decreases. The fastness of the cotton fabric finished by the methyolated copolymers to 10 repeated launderings in anionic commercial detergent is good enough to show colony reduction above 90% regardless of DMDAAC and AA ratios.

  • Poly(m-phenyleneisophthalamide), m-aramid has no adjacent $\alpha$-hydrogen of a nitrogen-halogen bond causes dehydrohalogenation. This fact proposes that m-aramid is one of good antimicrobial precursors. To enhance the surface area of m-aramid, electrospinning was employed. Scanning electron microscopy(SEM) was conducted to inspect the morphology change of m-aramid. The surface area of regular and electrospun m-aramid was calculated. Swatch test was applied to measure antimicrobial activity of the samples. The results showed that within 10 min contact time the electrospun m-aramid inactivated Escherichia coli KCTC 1039 (Gram-negative bacteria) with 8 log reductions.

  • In this study, cotton fibers were coated with a different weight percentage of octadecyl dimethyl(3-triethoxy silylpropyl) ammonium chloride(ODDMAC) to improve antimicrobial and water repellent properties. First, the ODDMAC dissolved in ethanol to prepare a solution. Then the cotton fibers were immersed in the ODDMAC/ethanol solution for 10 minutes at ambient temperature and dried at 80℃ for 3 minutes followed by curing. The treated cotton fibers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS). The treated cotton fibers revealed sufficient antimicrobial activity against Klebsiella pneumoniae(ATCC 4352) and Staphylococcus aureus(ATCCBAA-1707). The hydrophobic nature of the treated cotton fibers was characterized by contact angle measurement. The results showed that the cotton fibers treated with the ODDMAC showed excellent hydrophobic properties which improved to 121°.
