비동파 직접식 온수 급탕 시스템의 열성능에 관한 연구 (An Experimental Study on the Performance of a Freeze-Protected Direct Solar Water Heating System)

  • This paper reports the experimental results concerning the thermal performance of a freeze-protected direct solar water heating system. The direct system tested has been manufactured to prevent any breakage during harsh wintry conditions by specially designed riser and downcomer headers capable of relieving extra pressure due to freezing of water. The direct system tested has shown 10% improvement in its efficiency over that of a indirect type system using antifreeze as the heat transfer medium. It is felt that any direct system of its kind could galvanize the whole solar industry if further improvements are made to ensure its durability.

저가습 조건에서 냉각 유체의 고분자전해질 연료전지에 대한 영향 (Effect of Coolant on PEMFC Performance in Low Humidification Condition)

  • 고분자전해질 연료전지의 성능은 cell 온도, 전체 압력, 반응 기체의 부분 압력 상대습도와 같은 다양한 요인들에 의해 영향을 받는다. 이온화된 수소 이온은 $H_3O^+$의 형태로 membrane을 통과하여 물을 생성하는 반응으로 전기를 발생시킨다. 대용량 연료전지에서는 부수적으로 생성되는 열을 제거하거나 다른 용도로 사용할 목적으로 냉각시스템이 필요하다. 냉각수의 전도도가 상승할 경우에 연료전지에서 발생된 전류의 일부가 냉각수를 통하여 누설되어 연료전지의 성능을 감소시킬 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 3차 증류수와 ethylene glycol이 함유되어 있는 부동액을 사용하여 저항 수치 변화를 관찰하는 실험을 수행하였다. 3차 증류수의 경우 저항값이 설정치 이하로 내려가는데 약 28일이 소요되었고, 연료전지의 운전에 의한 영향은 관찰되지 않았다. 부동액을 냉각수로 사용한 경우는 43일이 지나도 저항값이 설정치 이하로 내려가지는 않았지만, stack 분리판의 접착부에 이상이 생긴 것으로 추정되는 연료전지의 성능 저하가 발생하여 전도도 실험을 중단하였다. 고분자전해질 연료전지에서는 수소이온의 이온전도성 저하를 방지하기 위하여 외부에서 가습하여 주는 방식이 일반적이지만, 소용량 연료전지에서는 무가습 조건을 적용하여 연료전지의 효율을 높이고 제작단가도 경감할 수 있다. 이를 위하여 저가습 및 무가습 실험을 수행하였으나 대용량 연료전지에서는 양측 무가습인 경우에 $50{\sim}60^{\circ}C$ 이상의 고온에서 성능이 발현되기 어려운 것으로 관찰되었다. 냉각수의 유량을 다르게 하여 실험을 수행한 경우에는 0.78L/min과 같은 낮은 유량에서 출구온도와 입구온도를 측정하여 본 결과 두 온도 사이에 ${\Delta}T$가 다른 유량에서보다 크게 발생하여 성능이 감소된 것으로 사료된다. 이와 같이 냉각수의 온도와 유량을 다르게 하여 양측 무가습 실험을 수행한 결과, 연료전지의 성능이 cell 온도에 직접적인 연관이 있는 것으로 관찰되었다.

  • 현재 1,2세대 바이오매스에 비해 상대적으로 값싸며 대량생산이 가능한 3세대 바이오매스인 해조류를 이용하여 다양한 바이오화합물 생산에 관한 연구들이 주목받고 있다. 이러한 이유는 해조류는 다른 바이오매스에 비해 빨리 자라나고, 큰 장비 없이도 쉽게 수확할 수 있다는 장점뿐만 아니라 다양한 화합물로 전환할 수 있는 당이 풍부하고 공정을 통해 쉽게 전환할 수 있기 때문이다. 이러한 해조류부터 다양한 바이오화합물을 생산하는데 있어서 한 가지로 resins, plasticizers, textiles, animal feed, coatings, antifreeze의 상업화된 공정에 사용할 수 있는 레불린산(levulinic acid)이 있다. 본 연구에서는 해조류로부터 효과적으로 레불린산을 생산하는데 있어서 온도, 시간, 산의 농도의 실험조건과 2단 산 처리 공정(two step acid treatment)을 통해 생산을 최적화 하는 조건을 탐색해 보았다. 첫번째 단계로는 상대적으로 저온에서 침지 공정을 통해 고상으로는 다양한 용도로 사용될 수 있는 셀룰로오스를 회수하고, 액상으로는 갈락토오스를 회수하였다. 2번째 단계로는 고온에서 회분식 공정을 통해 갈락토오스를 레불린산으로 전환하였다. 실험 결과 2단 산 처리 공정을 통해 초기바이오매스 기준 20.6%의 레불린산 수율을 확보하였다.

의식저하로 내원한 에틸렌 글리콜 중독 환자 1례 (Treatment of Ethylene Glycol Poisoning Patient Presented with Mental Change)

  • Ethylene glycol poisoning can cause profound morbidity and is almost universally fatal if untreated. Central nervous system depression, pulmonary edema, and acute oligulic renal failure with crystalluria are among the most commonly encountered complication of ingestion. Ingestion of ethylene glycol may be an important contributor in patients with metabolic acidosis and subsequent renal failure. The diagnosis of ethylene glycol poisoning is based on nonspecific clinical symptoms and signs and indirect and direct laboratory measurement of ethylene glycol. As a result, diagnosis and treatment sometimes can be delayed. We describe 52-year-old man who visited to emergency department with mental change of unknown origin. The patient has high anion gap metabolic acidosis and renal failure due to ingestion of antifreeze that contained ethylene glycol. We used hemodialysis for elimination technique. The patient was discharged with minimal complication.

등축 유로를 가진 이중진공관형 태양열 집열기의 열성능에 관한 시뮬레이션 연구 (The Performance Simulation of All-Glass Vacuum Tubes with Coaxial Fluid Conduit)

  • A numerical investigation has been carried out for a solar system, which consists of all glass solar vacuum tubes Water is heated as it flows through the coaxial fluid conduit inserted in each tube. The space between the exterior of the fluid conduit and the glass tube is filled with antifreeze solution. This is to facilitate heat transfer from the solar heated absorber surface to water and to prevent the functional problems due to freezing in frigid weather conditions. A one-dimensional steady state model is fully described which will be used to develop three-dimensional model using STAR-CD. These models could be used efficiently in designing all-glass solar collector tubes with different geometrical parameters other than those considered in the present analysis. Results show good agreement when compared with other experimental data demonstrating the reliability of the present model.

자동차 에틸렌글리콜 부동액의 혼합 농도 측정 장치 개발 (Device Development of Mixture Concentration of Ethylene Glycol Antifreeze Coolant for Vehicles)

  • This study presents a coolant density calculation device and its corresponding method by using a mass flowmeter and the LabVIEW program. The method can be easily measured with a mixture of coolant and by calculating the percentage of ethylene-glycol without additional investment. The cooling water is very important in a vehicle to protect the engine, and the cooling performance is affected by the mixture concentration and coolant density. The coolant density calculation device measures the mixed concentration in the anti-freeze cooling mixture made from distilled water and ethylene-glycol in real time with the mass flowmeter that is commonly attached to the radiator or heater core. The calculation program for the mixture concentration percentage was developed using the LabVIEW software. The correlation between experimental results and the calculation was conducted for a range of temperature from 40 to $90^{\circ}C$ and by varying the mixture ratio of distilled water and ethylene-glycol. As a result, the anti-freeze coolant concentration in the volume percentage is able to monitor the coolant density in a timely basis by implementing a mixture concentration calculation program without the need for additional equipment investment. The results of the calculation for the mixture concentration level show a maximum 2.7% deviation compared to the experimental results.

  • 에틸렌 글리콜(ethylene glycol)은 자동차 부동액 주성분으로 우리 실생활에 널리 쓰이고 있다. 접근이 용이하고 달콤한 맛 때문에 자살목적이나 보관 및 사용 시 의도적으로 또는 실수로 인한 오용사고가 자주 발생한다. 에틸렌 글리콜은 그 자체로는 인체의 독성이 낮지만 생체에서 대사과정을 거치면서 독성이 높아진 유기산을 만들어 다양한 조직에서 광범위한 세포손상을 유발한다. 다양한 세포 스트레스가 소포체(ER) 샤페론과 소포체 스트레스 센서의 유전자 발현을 유도하는 것은 이미 알려져 있다. 본 연구에서는 rat 조직에서 소포체 샤페론과 소포체 스트레스 센서 유전자의 발현 조절이 에틸렌 글리콜에 의해 유도되고, 조직학적 변화도 H&E 염색 및 면역 형광염색에 의해 확인하였다.

A Modified Cryopreservation Method of Psychrophilic Chlorophyta Pyramimonas sp. from Antarctica

  • Polar psychrophiles which thrive under extreme conditions such as cold temperature, high salinity, and high dose ultraviolet light, emerge as novel targets for biotechnology. To prevent genetic drift and the possibility of contamination by subculturing, cryopreservation was employed for two psychrophilic microalgae, Porosira sp. (KOPRI AnM0008) and Pyramimonas sp. (KOPRI AnM0046), which have anti-freeze activities. Five cryoprotectants (dimethyl sulphoxide, ethylene glycol, glycerol, methanol and propylene glycol) showed toxicity at 20-30% (v/v). The optimal cryoprotectant concentration and equilibration time were less than 20% and 10 min, respectively. Cryopreservation was carried out in the presence of cryoprotectants either by direct freezing in liquid nitrogen ($LN_2$) or controlled freezing using a controlled rate freezer followed by storage in the $LN_2$ tank. As a result, Pyramimonas sp. (KOPRI AnM0046), a psychrophilic chlorophyta was revived. Cryopreserved Porosira sp. was not revived from either freezing protocols probably due to the silicic cell wall and its relatively large cell size. In the case of Pyramimonas sp. (KOPRI AnM0046), the controlled freezing method showed higher revival yield than the direct freezing method.

Ice-Binding Protein Derived from Glaciozyma Can Improve the Viability of Cryopreserved Mammalian Cells

  • Ice-binding proteins (IBPs) can inhibit ice recrystallization (IR), a major cause of cell death during cryopreservation. IBPs are hypothesized to improve cell viability after cryopreservation by alleviating the cryoinjury caused by IR. In our previous studies, we showed that supplementation of the freezing medium with the recombinant IBP of the Arctic yeast Glaciozyma sp. (designated as LeIBP) could reduce post-thaw hemolysis of human red blood cells and increase the survival of cryopreserved diatoms. Here, we showed that LeIBP could improve the viability of cryopreserved mammalian cells. Human cervical cancer cells (HeLa), mouse fibroblasts (NIH/3T3), human preosteoblasts (MC3T3-E1), Chinese hamster ovary cells (CHO-K1), and human keratinocytes (HaCaT) were evaluated. These mammalian cells were frozen in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)/fetal bovine serum (FBS) solution with or without 0.1 mg/ml LeIBP at a cooling rate of -1℃/min in a -80℃ freezer overnight. The minimum effective concentration (0.1 mg/ml) of LeIBP was determined, based on the viability of HeLa cells after treatment with LeIBP during cryopreservation and the IR inhibition assay results. The post-thaw viability of mammalian cells was examined. In all cases, cell viability was significantly enhanced by more than 10% by LeIBP supplementation in 5% DMSO/5% FBS: viability increased by 20% for HeLa cells, 28% for NIH/3T3 cells, 21% for MC3T3-E1, 10% for CHO-K1, and 20% for HaCaT. Furthermore, addition of LeIBP reduced the concentrations of toxic DMSO and FBS down to 5%. Therefore, we demonstrated that LeIBP can increase the viability of cryopreserved mammalian cells by inhibiting IR.
