  • Purpose: As a preliminary study, the purpose of this study was to examine the indirect estimation of the lumbar intervertebral disc size by two anthropometric methods, in order to compare these indirect methods with the direct analysis by radiological imaging. Methods: The wrist, elbow, knee, and ankle joint (both right and left) diameters were measured in 52 volunteers, and then intervertebral disc size was calculated using two anthropometric methods (Colombini and modified Colombini). The data were analysed with independent t-test to assess clinical usefulness. Results: When using right and left joint diameter, there was no significant difference in the estimation value of the L4-5 and L5-S1 intervetebral disc sizes. However, the study has shown that male subjects have significantly larger L4-5 and L5-S1 intervertebral disc sizes, compared with those of female subjects. In addition, disc sizes calculated by Colombini's formula were significantly larger than modified Colombini's formula. Conclusion: The indirect estimation of the intervertebral disc size by anthropometric method can be considered as a clinically useful method. However, further study should be conducted to compare anthropometric values with other radiological imaging.

  • As a measure of health, the percentage of body fat has been utilized for many ergonomist, physician, athletic trainers, and work physiologists. Underwater weighing procedure for measuring the percentage of body fat is popular and accurate. However, it is relatively expensive, difficult to perform and requires large space. Anthropometric techniques can be utilized to predict the percentage of body fat in the field setting because they are easy to implement and require little space. In this concern, the purpose of this study was to find a regression model to easily predict the percentage of body fat using the anthropometric circumference measurements as predictor variables. In this study, the data for 10 anthropometric circumference measurements for 252 men were analyzed. A full model with ten predictor variables was constructed based on subjective knowledge and literature. The linear regression modeling consists of variable selection and various assumptions regarding the anticipated model. All possible regression models and the assumptions are evaluated using various statistical methods. Based on the evaluation, a reduced model was selected with five predictor variables to predict the percentage of body fat. The model is : % Body Fat = 2.704-0.601 (Neck Circumference) + 0.974 (Abdominal Circumference) -0.332 (Hip Circumference) + 0.409 (Arm Circumference) - 1.618 (Wrist Circumference) + $\epsilon$. This model can be used to estimate the percentage of body fat using only a tape measure.

  • All chairs are uncomfortable in the long run, but some chairs become uncomfortable more rapidly than others, and in any particular chair, some people will be more uncomfortable than others. Comfort will depend upon the interaction of chair characteristics, user characteristics, and task characteristics. In this study, we intend to design the comfortable office chair by investigating the anthropometric and biomechanical aspects for Korean. Therefore, we determine the design dimensions using the analysis of anthropometric data. With these dimensions, we design the chair mechanism of which backrest reclines with increasing chair pan declination. This mechanism allows the back to get adequate support at the correct level for any backrest declination. Also, the lumbar support in the backrest descends with increasing backrest reclining. By using this chair, a considerably better sitting posture can be obtained, and uncomfortable feeling and back pain may be prevented.

  • Objective: The aim of the study is to analyze female adult's body shape characteristics and to provide the basic information for clothing manufacturing. Background: The comparative study among the age groups is very fundamental to understand the body characteristics of each subjects group. Therefore, comparison of body measurements in age groups was applied in this study. Method: The study was fulfilled by the comparison between the data of the $5^{th}$ Anthropometry of Size Korea (2004) and the $6^{th}$ Anthropometry of Size Korea(2010). The subjects were 2,213 female adults aged 20~59 of the 5th Size Korea anthropometric survey and 2,025 female adults aged 20~59 of the 6th Size Korea anthropometric survey. Results: The differences indicated the decreased values in widths, depths, girths regarding the torso region and BMI. "Head height to Stature ratio" decreased significantly in the 6th data, on the other hand, "Crotch height to Stature ratio" increased in the 6th data. Through the distribution characteristic of the age groups by Stature groups, it was convinced that 160cm stature group is the most frequent among all age groups of the 6th Size Korea. Conclusion: As a summary, the meaningful differences were showed between the 5th anthropometric data and the 6th data. According to the 6th Size Korea, the distribution tendency of obesity is very similar to the 5th Size Korea data. But the percentage of obese women declined significantly. Application: These findings from the study can be utilized women's wear design and construction that reflect body characteristics.

  • This study was performed to investigate the relationships among bone mineral densities (BMD), anthropometric data and lifestyle factors in the elderly. Subjects included 138 elderly (male: 38, female: 100) aged over 65 years, who were home-(dwelling in a low-income area of Puchon City. The BMDs of the lumbar spines (LS), femoral necks (FN), Ward′s triangles (WT) and trochanters (TC) were measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. The females showed significantly lower BMDs in four sites (p < 0.0001) . The elderly aged over 75 revealed significantly more decreased femoral BMDs than the elderly aged 65 to 74. Female with BMIs of 20 to 25, showed significantly higher BMDs in LS, FN and trochanter than those with BMIs of less than 20. However, males displayed significantly higher BMDs in only LS with increasing BMIs. THe BMDs of LS correlated with weights (r = 0.543, p < 0.001), heights (r = 0.477, p < 0.001), upper arm circumferences (r=0.368, p < 0.01), waist circumferences (r=0.367, p < 0.001), subscapular skinfold thicknesses (r=0.363, p < 0.001) and flip circumferences (r=0.231, p < 0.01). Non-smokers and non-drinkers shelved significantly higher BMDs in trochanters only in the case of the males. Female milk-drinkers showed significantly elevated LS BMDs. Eighteen percent of the males were assessed as having osteoporosis, as compared to fifty percent of the females. Ninety-three percent of the females and 81.6% of the males responded that they often or always had "difficulty in standing for a long time".

  • The aim of this study was to establish the basic data on anthropometric characteristics of Korean farmers in a sitting posture. 533 Korean farmers(Male: 236persons, Female: 297persons) volunteered for this study from 8 different provinces nationwide in 2010. Subjects were classified according to their sex and categorized into 4 age groups from 40s to 70s and over. Statistical tests such as descriptive analysis, independent t-test, one-way and two-way ANOVA were conducted to analyze the data. The results were as follows: Korean farmers generally edged toward obesity. The older the farmers were, the smaller their body sizes were, but fatter in the abdominal areas. There were significant differences on the waist-related measurement items between farmers and the public. The farmers' waist-related sizes were larger than that of the public of all age groups in the male group, but only the forties age group in the female group. It tended to differ according to sex and age groups that we analyzed from the measurement values on other items between farmers and the public.

  • In order to investigate the dietary intakes and physical characteristics in college women smokers, interviews using questionnaires were done on 33 smokers and 42 nonsmokers residing in seoul area. General living habits, dietary habits, food consumption frequency and nutrient intake by quick estimation were investigated through direct interviews with subjects. Subjects height, weight and blood pressure were measured, and body fat percentage were statistically analyzed using Bio-electrical Impedence Fatness Analyzer(GIF-891). All data were statistically analyzed by SAS PC package program ; percentage or mean and standard error were examined for each item, and the significant difference was evaluated by chi-square test or Student's t-test at $\alpha$=0.05. In the analysis of taste and food preference, smokers consumed larger amount of alcohol and coffee than nonsmokers ; they also disliked sweet taste. The results of food consumption frequency data also showed that smokers consumed less fish, milk and fruits but consumed more instant foods than nonsmokers. As a result of anthropometric measurements, height, age, and 패요 fat percentage showed no difference, but there was a significant difference in weight, BMI, systolic blood pressure, and diastolic blood pressure. Energy intake in nonsmokers was 1640 ㎉/day(CHO : Pro : Fat=66.0 : 14.7 : 19.3), in smokers. Intakes of calcium, iron, vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, and niacin in smokers were not significantly different from those of nonsmokers.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the torso patterns by analyzing sensory evaluations. The anthropometric measurements for female college students were obtained between March and October in 1998, and a total of 197 anthropomatric data was used for the somatotype analysis. The appearance and fit of three kinds of torso patterns(ESMOD, FIT, and Muller & sohn) were evaluated by expert panel and the subjects. The results of the anthropometric measurements and sensory evaluations are as follows; The mean height of the anthropometric data for 197 students is 158.98cm. The largest proportion of the three somatotypes(H, M and A type) is big hip type(A type) consisting of 47.7% of all the respondents. The result of the torso pattern evaluations by expert panel indicates that the ESMOD pattern obtains the highest rating in general acceptability. A significant difference(p<.05) in the responses to two questions, the placement of the waist dart, and the gapping & creasing at back hip area was found. The ESMOD and Muller & sohn patterns are given the highest rating in the general acceptability. The result of the evaluation was obtained by the subjects. (Korean J.
