Background: The serratus anterior (SA) is a muscle that performs protraction of the scapulothoracic joint and plays a role in stabilizing the scapula. Imbalances or weaknesses in SA activation are associated with a variety of shoulder dysfunctions, making selective SA strengthening important for rehabilitation. Objects: We aimed to compare the muscle activation of the pectoralis major (PM), SA, external oblique (EO), and internal oblique (IO) during the push-up plus (PUP) exercise with isometric hip adduction (HA) and abdominal drawing-in maneuver (ADIM). Methods: Nineteen healthy male participants performed three PUP exercises: standard PUP, PUP with ADIM, and PUP with HA. Surface electromyography was used to measure and analyze the muscle activity for PM, SA, EO, and IO. Results: PUP with HA showed the lowest PM activity and highest SA activity, and no significant difference was observed between PUP and PUP with ADIM. PUP with ADIM showed significantly the highest EO and IO activity, followed by PUP with HA and PUP. Additionally, PUP with HA showed the lowest PM/SA ratio, and no significant difference was noted between PUP and PUP with ADIM. Conclusion: PUP with HA was able to show high SA muscle activity while reducing PM muscle activity. In addition, PUP with HA can lead to higher EO and IO muscle activity than standard PUP. This exercise could be used as a practical exercise method to selectively strengthen SA and improve scapular muscle stability during early shoulder rehabilitation.
Purpose: Despite the high incidence of abdominal stab injuries, the rate of nontherapeutic laparotomies and the predictors of therapeutic laparotomies have rarely been studied in low-income settings. Methods: This multicenter retrospective study involved three of the largest academic medical centers in central Ethiopia. All patients who sustained an anterior abdominal stab injury and underwent exploratory laparotomy, regardless of the intraoperative findings, were included over the 3-year course of the study. Results: Of the 117 patients who underwent exploratory laparotomy, 35 patients (29.9%) underwent nontherapeutic laparotomies. Three factors predicted therapeutic laparotomy: hollow viscus evisceration (adjusted odds ratio [AOR], 5.77; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.16-28.64; P=0.032), localized and generalized peritonitis (AOR, 4.77; 95% CI, 1.90-11.93; P=0.001), and white blood cell count ≥11,500/mm3 (AOR, 2.77; 95% CI, 1.002-7.650; P=0.049). The overall positive predictive value of the therapeutic predictors was 80.2%, while the negative predictive value of all predictor-negative patients was 58.1%. The predictors would have prevented 51.4% of the nontherapeutic laparotomies. Conclusions: Close to one-third of the patients had a nontherapeutic laparotomy. The clinical predictors of therapeutic laparotomy were shown to have a high positive predictive value despite a lower negative predictive value. Further prospective studies that involve all patients who sustain anterior abdominal stab injuries are needed to potentially improve on the negative predictive value of the predictors suggested by our study.
The author studied on the tongue position, tongue space and intermaxillary space at 4 groups; normal occlusion 30 cases, Angle's Class I bimaxillary protrusion 29 cases, Angle's Class II malocclusion 26 cases, Angle's Class III malocclusion 26 cases. This study used the data from cephalometric films of female subject aged from 16 to 23 years. Following results were obtained; 1. Dorsal height in Angle's Class III malocclusion was greater than normal occlusion. 2. Anterior Intermaxillary Height in Angle's Class I bimaxillary protrusion and Angle's Class III malocclusion was greater than normal occlusion. 3. Tongue space in Angle's Class I bimaxillary protrusion was greater than normal occlusion. 4. The ratio of the tongue space to the intermaxillary space (T.S./I.S.) in Angle's Class II malocclusion was greater and the ratio in Angle's Class III malocclusion is lesser than normal occlusion.
Purpose: The objective of this study was to examine the changes in muscle activity on the anterior deltoid muscle depending on the stretch rate of kinesio tape when applying kinesio tape in healthy adult subjects. Methods: This study was a single-blind randomized controlled trial, including 22 healthy participants (male 15, female 7) with no pathology or past history of shoulder who participated voluntarily. Participants applied a different stretch rate of the kinesio tape, and the functional activity was tested. The stretch rate of kinesio tape was 0%, 10%, and 20%. Subjects lifted a weight (5% of their body weight) to their shoulder height. Subjects lifted a weight up to an angle of 90 degrees in the sagittal plane, and muscle activities (biceps brachii, anterior deltoid, middle deltoid, upper trapezius) were assessed using EMG (electromyography). Analysis of muscle activity was divided into two parts (lift weight and keep holding). The EMG activity of each muscle was normalized to the value of reference voluntary contraction (%RVC) and explored using repeated ANOVA. Results: There were no significant differences in muscle activity depending on the ratio of tape stretch when lifting a weight (p>0.05). There were no significant differences in muscle activity depending on the ratio of tape stretch when holding a weight (p>0.05). Conclusion: According to the results of this study, in the case of applying kinesio taping therapy for healthy people, it was found that the stretch rate of the tape does not have an effect on muscle activity.

Objective : This study is to evaluate the efficacy of dorsal short-segment fixation in unstable thoracolumbar junction fractures. Methods : The cases of 20 patients who underwent dorsal short-segment fixation were reviewed retrospectively. Clinical outcomes were analysed using Sonntag's pain level, work status, and neurological scale according to the modified Frankel classification. Radiological outcomes were analysed using Mumford's anterior body compression[%], canal compromise ratio, and Cobb's kyphotic angle. Results : At the latest clinical follow-up [average=14.6 months]. there were 19 [95.0%] in group I and 1 patient [5.0%] in II in pain level. The postoperative work status were 17 [85.0%] in group I, 2 patients [10.0%] in II, and 1 patient [5.0%] in V. Surgery brought to improve the neurologic status. In success group [19 cases, 95%], the average canal compromise ratio was reduced from 0.57 [${\pm}0.07$] to 0.05 [${\pm}0.08$] [P<005], the average anterior body compression [%] was reduced from 41% [${\pm}17$] to 18% [${\pm}14$] [P<0.05], and the average preoperative kyphotic angle was $20.0^{\circ}$ [${\pm}9.0$], and corrected to $5.7^{\circ}$ [${\pm}7.1$] postoperatively, and progressed to $7.8^{\circ}$ [${\pm}6.2$] at the latest follow-up. There was a case of implantation failure in an elderly osteoporotic patient. Conclusion : Although there are limitations in the patient number and follow-up period, the present study favors dorsal short-segment fixation for selective cases in unstable thoracolumbar junction fractures.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM. Little information is available about the buccal gingival level of multiple implant restorations. PURPOSE. This study was aimed to evaluate the relationship between width and height of buccal soft tissue around single and 2 adjacent implant restorations. MATERIAL AND METHODS. Four implant restoration groups (first and second molars, single second molars, posterior single restorations between teeth, and anterior single restorations between teeth) were randomly chosen from one dental institute. Each group comprised of 6 patients. After 6 months of function, silicone impressions were taken and stone models were fabricated for each restoration group. The stone models were cut in bucco-lingual direction at the most apical point of buccal gingival margin. The height and width of buccal supra-implant soft tissue were measured. One way ANOVA and Tukey HSD post hoc tests were performed to analyze the data obtained (P < .05). RESULTS. The most unfavorable width-height ratio was noted for the group, which was comprised of the second molar in the multiple adjacent (first and second molar) implant-supported restorations. The group also resulted in the shorter height of buccal supra-implant mucosa rather than that of anterior single implant restorations between natural teeth. CONCLUSION. To achieve a favorable level of buccal gingival margin, greater thickness of buccal supra-implant mucosa is required for the implant restorations without a neighboring natural tooth compared to the implant restorations next to a natural tooth.
Orthodontists have experienced the treatment of cases with three lower incisors. Occasionally a lower incisor was either congenitally missing or so seriously damaged by injury or disease that its removal presented the best prospect for the patient. Sometimes the intentional extraction of a lower incisor is needed to produce enhanced functional and esthetic results with minimal orthodontic manipulation. Such cases have unfavorable anterior tooth size discrepancies and present difficulties in achieving good occlusal results. However such difficulties can be overcome by the sensible diagnosis and treatment plan. Three different cases are presented and the conclusions are listed. 1. It is important for orthodontist who tries to treat three lower incisor cases to measure and calculate accurately the degree of deviation of tooth size and morphology and the anterior tooth size ratio. 2. A diagnostic setup model should be made to determine whether the incisor extraction is appropriate and space closure is needed or not. It is the best way to be sure that the occlusal results, including overbite and overjet, will be acceptable and how far the degree of midline deviation is. It also shows the amount of interproximal reduction to achieve an acceptable occlusal result. 3. The class I relationship between the upper canine and the lower one must be obtained to establish the canine rise during eccentric movement by the concept of mutually protective occlusion. It also helps to maintain the stable occlusal result.

We investigate the clinical characteristics of odontoma in childhood and adolescence. A retrospective analysis was performed in 105 patients under 15 years old who were diagnosed with odontoma in Kyungpook National University Dental Hospital, the department of pediatric dentistry between 1 January 2008 and 31 December 2013. The ratio of compound odontoma, immature odontoma and complex odontoma were 67.6%, 21.9% and 10.5%, respectively. Odontoma was more prevalent in males and the ratio of males to females was 1.5:1. The age of patients ranged from 3 to 14 years old with an average age of 9.3 years old. The odontoma was more frequently located in the maxilla (73.3%) than in the mandible(26.7%). In 98 cases, it was treated by surgical removal. Among adjacent teeth impacted by odontoma, 26 cases (34.7%) of successional permanent teeth were erupted when only odontoma were removed and 6 cases (8.0%) were erupted when surgical exposure was performed. Orthodontic tractions were performed in 43 cases (57.3%). In conclusion, odontoma could cause complications such as impaction of teeth. If they are found early and treated properly, high eruption success of successional permanent teeth can be obtained. The occurrence frequency of immature odontoma are higher than that of complex odontoma, and they are observed intensively in anterior maxillary teeth. Therefore, it is considered that they are important causes of dental impaction in anterior maxillary teeth.
Purpose: This study was to determine the immediate effects of pulsed magnetic field (PMF) in subjects with upper trapezius (UT) trigger point (TrP). Methods: Fifteen subjects with UT TrP were recruited for the study's PMF group (pain threshold=$2.29kg/cm^2$), and 15 age-, weight-, and gender-matched subjects with UT TrP were recruited for control group (pain threshold=$2.25kg/cm^2$). Pressure algometer was used to measure pressure pain threshold on UT TrP and, cervical range of motion (ROM) inclinometer was used to measure cervical ROM. Surface electromyography was used to record UT, lower trapezius, and serratus anterior muscle activity and relative ratio during scapular plane abduction between pre- and post-treatment. Results: The PMF effectively improved pain threshold and concurrently increased ROM (rotation to the painful side, lateral flexion to the nonpainful side). In addition, the PMF may effectively deactivate UT activity during abduction and the muscle activity ratio between UT and serratus anterior. Conclusion: These findings provided empirical evidence that PMF can be an effective treatment method to reduce pain threshold, to increase cervical ROM, and deactivate UT activity in individuals with TrP.
